By my calculations, across the first nine rounds Petracca had 47 kicks inside 50 with one resulting in a mark for a teammate. Through 11 rounds, he is three from 58 with two of his kicks against Brisbane being marked.

Here are the Melbourne players with 15+ kicks inside 50, sorted by mark percentage and then retention percentage.

Kicks inside 50 resulting in a mark, 2025, 15+ kicks

Thanks so much for doing this. Much appreciated. Really valuable information. I assume Goody and the team have this. Wonder what the worst culprits think of this and what if anything arw rhwy trying to do about it.

Hey @WheeloRatings , thanks again for providing all these stats over the journey. Much appreciated.

I am wondering if it would be possible to get some stats on the players delivering the ball the most i50 and the result of their delivery. I read last week Trac has kicked the ball i50 this season 45 times and only one of those kicks has been marked. That's not my memory. I would be really interested to see which players kicks it most i50 in the team and what the mark/retention rate is for them. Thanks IT

And Blakeys dad worked for the Swans. He was born with a footy in his cot so it was utterly ridiculous he got to play for the swans. Same goes for Kalani.

Jack Buckley is another. His father Ben played for Nth. Not of the calibre of Blakey or White but Jack consequently played AFL right from the beginning of Juniors. He played at my son's junior club and was a member of the Swans Academy but for some bizarre reason GWS were able to pick him up as a Rookie B player even though he was playing AFL the season he was recruited and even won a rising star nomination.

Callum Mills played club footy right from juniors and also taken in the Swans Academy. To be fair there's only a handful of NSW comp players who've ever made it. The McVeighs were others. Mark McClure was an outlier back in the '70's. Rampe was a NSW player picked up as a non Academy player after being rejected in multiple drafts and even going down to Melb and playing for Williamstown at the suggestion of the Bulldogs who said they were interested until they weren't. He only got picked up by the Swans because he was playing in a local team in Sydney with Paul Roos's son and Roosy spotted him.

I don't understand the academy system. Can someone explain why he is in it?

It's a very good question. The original purpose of the Northern Academies in NSW and Qld was to get a greater pool of players for the expanding competition who otherwise wouldn't be playing AFL. To make that happen they incentivised the teams in those states to make an investment in finding junior players and developing them in return for getting to have the rights to them.

Isaac Heeney is the ultimate poster boy for this strategy. He was I think 11 years old and playing Rugby League in country NSW and went along to a Swans Academy recruiting camp I believe inspired by the lots of freebies they were giving out and an interest in trying something completely different. Nick Blakey on the other hand like Kalani was a son of an elite AFL champion who was always going to play AFL but because he lived in the Swans area was able to train at their Academy and therefore be eligible to be picked by them even though that was not the intention of the set up of the Academies but it's probably too hard to differentiate those junior players. Kalani grew up in the Suns Academy area and has trained with them from a young age. That's why he can go there if he and they want him to.

There are some very big football decisions to be made...AFL experience might just be a handy box to tick.

Who would want to be a CEO of an AFL club and especially this one. How quickly people forget. The last CEO was solely responsible for us getting our last Premiership. If it wasn't for him "interfering" in the football dept. and insisting the Coach not be sacked, we wouldn't have our latest Premiership.

How is this bloke equipped to make that decision one way or the other. Short answer. He isn't. Although to be fair that decision might make itself by the end of the season one way or the other.

  6. I notice the Fed Govt budget has allocated $13.6mill to the NRL St George Illawarra Dragons for a new high performance centre. Might give an idea of what we can hopefully expect. Except we are a bigger organisation than an NRL team and it creates a much needed facility for the local precinct. Can't remember if it's a Federal Labor or Liberal electorate.

  8. 45,800 today. Just spoke to the club. Last year there was a 5148 membership spike between this week and the next week when games begun so fingers crossed we have a great game and get the spike.

I’m not sure about NGAs (I haven’t been able to find any lists of NGAs) but we have Ryder Brown and Marley Davey coming up as father/son players although they aren’t draft eligible until at least 2027.

On Marcus Prasad, at last report he’s 169cm but slight in build but considered freakish. I hope he grows in both height and weight by the time he gets to draft age.

Scouting Notes: 2024 Victorian Under 16 trials

    #1 Marcus Prasad (Dandenong Stingrays)
    Small Forward | 169cm | 23/03/2008

Skipper in game two, Prasad was one of the many crafty smalls on show throughout the day. His best play was a terrific finish on goal during the second quarter, where he squeezed the ball just inside the post with a low spearing kick. Prasad’s creativity was evident and he took a high mark in term four to add to his moments.

This kid smiles like I do.  I think I’m beaming and it always comes out like this.

Or maybe he’s like my son and would rather be dead than have to have a photo with his old man.

If i was to compare the pair at the same age and stage id have to say Harvey is more mature than i reckon Tracc might have been in his first year.

Tracc stuck me as a big energetic kid, like an Alaksan malamute puppy, whereas Langford is more a Doberman pinscher pup.

From what I've heard Harvey is more mature than Tracc now.

Very pleased with this result.  Stability now returned.

Or you could say Stability continued. Thank goodness.

Members have stood up and made a very resounding statement on who they will vote for and more importantly who they won't. Hopefully one extremely destabilising candidate will finally get the members message after several attempts and finally leave the Club alone. They seem to have inspired the biggest voting turnout in club history and it wasn't for them.

Interesting that 584 people who voted didn't vote for Steven Smith. As Abraham Lincoln once said "You can't please all of the people all of the time." Wonder which candidates they thought were better. I guess it's pretty obvious.  I guess another Abe Lincoln quote might apply to their candidate. “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”  Although in his case it doesn't look like he fooled many of the people any time.

Yes. I’d go so far as to say we’ll make top four. Of course, I’m delusional and have my head in the sand, a happy clapper if you will, but this year’s preseason is different in so many ways. If I had to pick one word to describe the biggest difference it would be… HUNGER. It’s spread around the entire group, they’re all driven by it.

Have to say I've never been happy with the Clapper.

Edit. Not that I have ever had the Clapper mind you. But I wouldn't be if I did.

  13. I made it down there yesterday but was flat out heading back Nth to write before now. I was planning a big one but there are so many excellent track reporters nowadays most of it's been covered. But here's a few comments.

Poor old Jason Taylor had the misfortune of being identified by me. He was standing a bit away from the coaching section. So much for a nice quiet uninterrupted observation of training. I'm afraid I wasn't going to let Demonland down by letting him get away with that. In summary he laughed when I said it must be a bit like watching his babies run out on the field and strange so soon after just picking them. I asked him what expectations were there about when Lindsay might play. He said Oh well he's coming off a PCL and won't join in full training till mid Jan so it will be a while. I mentioned that Johnson seemed to be doing incredibly well at keeping up with the running especially as he's just come in. He said Yeh, he loves running and is a really good runner. Amazing for me given how most players who have come over from other clubs haven't been able to get close to the MFC running when they start in pre season and this guy's come in from only one season of VFL and is way more up to speed than any of them. He looks particularly agile and quick off his feet.

Firstly I haven't managed to get to training since before Covid. The first thing I noticed is how much bigger they are now than I have seen in the past. A few years ago they had a real emphasis on running over strength and the squad had collectively trimmed down. It is noticeable they have bulked up again but I would say with more refined training practices nowadays they are probably running better than they did then.

Secondly Viney's leadership really stood out. It's interesting that others picked up that Max was taking a bit of a back seat. But it's been interesting that Vines has turned up from day one of the 1st to 3rd years and has led them all the way. Today he was very noticeably leading all over the ground. When his group finished their 2km's he stayed on his feet when everyone else was collapsed and he walked around to every player in the group and patted them and gave them words of encouragement. His fitness was also right up there in the running.

Thirdly. Clarry. I noticed in photos I've seen since they've started back that he's still got that bulkiness he had last year. Then in the 2km he was lagging off the back of his group. I was thinking this really isn't looking that great. But near the end of the session they did multiple 120m run throughs and he led his group in everyone of them and that's at the end of a very tough session. Sigh of relief. Don't worry about Clarry he's clearly done the work in the off season.

Fourthly, I don't know why I'm numbering these points. Pointless. Oh well. Kossie blitzed his 2km group. He's really done the work this off season and I get the feeling he's realised he needs to make the most of his god given talent. I'm picking him to have a special season.

Fourthly, others have mentioned Harry Sharp. His running was extraordinary. It wasn't just that he blitzed the group with his endurance but he's that very rare combination of speed and endurance. I have no doubt he will replace ANB's role and end up being an upgrade with better pace and skills. There's a lot to learn to get up to ANB's contribution though. I thought he was leading the B & F earlier in the season.

Fifthly Jefferson has really bulked up since last season. He has a mature AFL footballers body now. A lot rests on him making it as a viable key forward. It's been such a long time since we've been able to develop one from the draft other than JVR.

Windsor was surprisingly lagging back in the 2km but then again he's coming back from a long term injury but I thought he would have been up to speed by now. I can't believe he will be played anywhere than the wing. So few players know now to play that role and he's walked in from day one nailing it. No doubt in the off season players get moved around to play different positions to learn them. Wingers often play deep in defence and off half back in transition so it makes sense for him to be doing that. The role nowadays is all about transition now anyway.

Kentfield took me a while to pick up. He didn't stand out so much in height and build. He's a very strange build. He's huge around the hips and [censored] and it's almost like his body which is much skinnier sits on top of his hips.

It was interesting to see Selwyn Griffith walking around the boundary doing menial things like placing posts in the ground. It just shows you how they run on such short staffing nowadays. Its just appalling the AFL haven't lifted the coaching soft cap back up by now.

Go Dees. I have to say that this time last year I was supper flat and pessimistic about the coming season. Mind you there was a lot of turmoil then. I feel very different this preseason. There's minimal injuries. There's clearly articulated recognition of the failings in the gameplan that is being addressed with changes in the coaching staff which didn't happen last season. I have a gut feeling that Jefferson is going to start performing in 2025. I'm picking Tholstrop to be a big improver. Kossie looks like he's done a power of work over the break. He had a pretty ordinary 2024 so hopefully he goes to next level. We have Maxy back up next year in Campbell. Langford will at the very least add desperately needed depth to the midfield that we didn't have this year. Onwards and upwards Dees.

  14. I went to training yesterday. Watching Harry Sharp blitz everyone including Lingers with both endurance and speed. It's a no brainer for me he will fill the role and ultimately be an upgrade with his pace and skill. Having said that the way Nibbler played his role became pivotal to the whole ball movement. So it will take some time to get up to the ability to execute the role the way Nibbler did.

  15. From memory the plan is for the Club to reach $15mill in funds and then raise a further $10mill through fund raising. Then the rest from everyone else, State & Fed Govt's, AFL maybe the Racing Club. If they did an Eddie they could sell naming rights and raise the required money that way. That's what he did at Olympic Park to fund it when we didn't have the funds to fund it. If only.
