I think that their use is very much a placebo if that makes sense.

Gus, even though consciously knows that they don't offer much protection if you take a hit to the head, apparently feels more comfortable wearing one. Call it a psychological thing.

Yeap sure does and have heard him say as much, along with his mum wanting him to wear one.

Great article. But what I don’t get is why would a player such as Paddy not wear protective headgear? Or any player, for that matter.

He did in his last year at the Saints and didn’t do anything to stop the issues, literature suggests helmets are ok at preventing some cuts and bruising on the head but does nothing to stop the brain bouncing around in the skull.

  3. Blues look really good at times… sad too see but wow the first half was some high class footy. Cripps is a weapon again, he took Bont to school tonight.

The Dogs hung around, the backline is so ave it amazes me how they do it.

I still fail to see the hatred for Weightman, he worked really hard all night, zero “playing for frees”, bizarre.

I had a feeling something was up with Dusty in last weeks game.

With the game slipping out of Richmond’s reach, Dusty could only muster 2 or 3 touches in the last quarter and surprisingly spent much of the quarter out of the guts.

In his prime he would’ve dominated that last qtr.

Coming back from a significant injure along with his dad passing.. tough times, I hope he is ok.

Mentioned on Gus and Gawny that the club is giving away a free 2nd membership for those who purchase a 3 game membership, if you use the Gus and Gawny code. That's one way of bolstering the membership tally.

I did hear that and had a good Lol, 2 members for the price of 1.

The guy had no time at all to sum up the situation or make a conscious choice to take action.

He did not perform an aggressive act ... "oh look, here's an opportunity to send this guy into next week" ... he just stood there basically.

There is a difference between choosing to bump someone -- taking the risk that your bump will inflict damage -- and standing there while some bloke runs into you. Yes, he didn't mean to run into him. Nor did Robinson mean to harm the Port guy. But the AFL have to accept that in a contact sport, sometimes players get hurt in spite of everyone's intent.

Robinson 8 years ago would have run straight through the other guy, amazing he is now getting time off for standing around.

  7. What is the random "rule" or "interpretation" when going for a mark the umpire deems an unreasonable attempt.... looked pretty unreasonable and [censored] Gil on The Front Bar.

So its an unreasonable attempt coming from behind and trying to take a hanger but coming front on and smashing a player, yet you got nowhere near the ball is A-OK..... ppfftt

Weightman would have to be one of my most hated players. He got one goal, from a free kick, and I watched their finals game against Essendon recently and he kicked 4 goals all from free kicks, one of which the commentators couldn't work out what the free kick was even for, it was a bit like the one against us.

I can't stand that little mouth breather and was shocked when one of the commentators said he's everyones favourite and everyone likes to watch him play. I'm so glad we didn't pick him.

Not one of the frees against Ess were from Weightman diving or milking a free, the ump got the one clearly wrong, I have no idea how anyone could dislike Weightman for something not of his doing. Bizarre.

He certainly did. Watching the replay and that just happened. BBB handball to Lingers leading up to Viney's goal was magnificent.

Flag unfurling never gets old. Could watch every day.

How could he get it so wrong?! A) wasn't playing the game and B) different teams... what could it be...

On a related note, an interesting article in the age a few days back:

    https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/fewer-picks-or-remnants-mitchell-s-rebuild-is-harder-than-clarkson-s-20220319-p5a647.html

It's early days for Mitchell and who knows, maybe he is the next golden child, master coach that will take the AFL by stom, but he's been dealt a pretty dodgy hand to start with.  Hawthorn are probably the modern equivalent of the MFC in respects to their dominance of the competition for around the last 30 - 40 years.  No doubt pleanty of Norm Smith curse assertions to be found in a Alistair Clackson sacking thread and they may well come to fruition.

For all the claims of Hawthorn's superior list and organisational management, look how badly they bungled recruiting over the past 5 or so years and how badly they handled Clarkson's exit.  Even now with access to good draft picks, there's no gaurentees they can rise back into the eight, let alone premiership contention any time in the next 5 - 15 years.  They are currently flush with funds and members, but that may not be the case after another 20 or 30 years in the AFL wilderness.  Wouldn't take long for their piggy bank to run dry with lack of on feild sucess and escalating costs into the future.  Can only hope the footy gods bring them 50 odd years of pain before tasting real sucess again.

Maybe at some point it will be Hawthorn supporters that wished they'd voted for the merger, so the could at least have a 20mm hawk ar the bottom of the red V on a MFC jumper.

I'd love to see the Hawks (and the Cats) have a prolonged spell outside of the 8 and see how they cope. Plenty of chit was heaped on us over the years (rightly so for most of it) I'd find it fascinating to see how these "big" clubs go without finals, drop/stagnation in members, drop/stagnation in sponsors and poor timeslot games.

Graham Wright was touted a genius for some time and it looks like he and Clarko left the cupboards pretty bare.

So I’m finally watching a bit of the replay on my lunch break (thank you Covid for this WFH win!).
And one thing I really love is how well we play as a team. I watched a few teams on the weekend yelling and abusing teammates for bad kicks which I thought was so poor.
In contrast we support one another, we group together and chat and make decisions on the field. We don’t attack, we don’t point fingers and we don’t let anything phase us. I think that is a sign of a really good team that trusts the process and trusts one another.
For example third quarter, we just took the lead back. ANB gets BB and Fritta together for a chat to point our positioning. This is a guy who last year was on the trash pile and he’s now setting up forward structures. Just wonderful to watch.

Watched the replay on my lunch break… don’t ever doubt Jaded as a Dees tragic/lunatic.

One thing I did notice on the night I forgot about was BBB doing the snap around the corner, unless he was right at the point post he rarely ever went for an around the corner shot at goal.

Don’t know if they still do, but the Sydney Demons would usually gather at the Camelia Grove Hotel in Alexandria, just a short walk from Erskinville Station.

    Seems friendly :)
