  1. the posters who take an entire post, and comment on the most minor, insignificant detail (walker being pick 1 or 2) instead of on the subject itself are type we dont need posting on demonland. if you have differing opinion, you agree wholeheartedly or vehemently disagree...that's what makes this forum interesting...calling people stupid because of the smallest, meaningless detail of a post does not contribute at all. i have yet to read a post from 'freak' that i found genuinly interesting or that meaningfully contributed to a discussion.
  2. carlton had more to lose than we did this weekend... we essentially lost pick 18 (and dropped from pick 2 to pick 4...no biggie really)...we couldv used the extra pick but what can u do. we didnt really deserve a priority pick considering we lost about 4-5 games this season where we were in front with about 2 minutes to go (kangaroos, Essendon, Port Adelaide, Western Bulldogs and Collingwood were 5 games we really couldv/shouldv won)... but what really shits me is carlton. They lost the last 11 games of the season to claim the number 1 pick their own. throughout these 11 weeks were obvious methods ensuring they would lose matches. Dropping Fevola for the demons game rond 14, Lappin retiring without a farewell game, playing youngsters well before there time, playing entire games without a ruckman in the selected side, playing 2nd gamers on the best forwards...the list goes on and on. The team Carlton selected for round 22 could NOT win an afl game no matter how hard they tried! But its not like Carlton has done this once off. they have come 16th or 15th pretty much the last 6 seasons! if that's not enough, they're proud of it! they flaunt their number 1 picks as if they deserve them. They have cheated the afl and are dispicable. They will become a strong team in 2-3 years time and everyone will forget how they got there. By deliberately losing! Mick Malthouse said it himself after collingwood just beat the blues. "If carlton want to win another game this season, they will"...they didn't. It frustrates me bc now they look like having one of the most promising lists in the afl. tell me which club wouldnt be promising if they were entirely made up of first round picks!!! Carlton future quality players: (pick in draft): Gibbs (1), Murphey (1), Simpson (45), Kennedy (4) Then add these to other very promsing up-n-comers: Fisher, Russel (9), O,hAilapin (ireland), Walker (1), Hampson (17), Hartlett (25), Grigg (19), Bower (20) Together with their young senior players: Stevens, Houlihan, Fevola, Scotland, Thornton, Waite and Whitnall This season they should have been around 7th-11th. If they had any footballing integrity, with some real effort, they could have won atleast 8 games this season. Instead they get to add to that list of youngsers pick 1 (Kruise), pick 3 (Morton) and pick 20! they are dispicable. yes, they may become a strong club in years to come, but the way theyv done it is by rorting the afl system and coming last every year. wat a joke.
  3. there is no explanation that i could accept as to why Garland and Buckley werent playing this last month. pickett, Bizzel and Brown have played every game this past month. they are now retired and by the start of next season will be a distant memory. we couldv fast tracked their development (ala Carlton's youngsters whov been fast tracked like Bower, Hampson, Grigg etc) but instead they rot in the ressies. it disgusts me
  4. Gibbs, Murphey, Walker, Simpson, Carrazo, Kennedy, Fischer, O'hAilpin, Kruiser, Cale Morton, pick 20 along with upncomers in Bower, Hampson, Jackson, Russel as well as pretty young (under 25) quality players in Waite, Stevens, Houlihan and Fevola. unfortunately Carlton have a far bigger upside than us. the worst thing about winning this week is NOT what we lost (only pick 18 essentially), but Carlton are gonna be [censored] amazing is 2-3 years time. They would have been strong even without the better draft picks this year. It absolutely disgusts me how Carlton have cheated the competition. they are a dispicable team and they could easily have won 5 games this season if they wanted to. they deliberately field a team that is so young that it cannot win a game of afl football. They have rorted us and bc they dont mind being pathetic, they will benefit long term. and to top it all off, however disgusted i am with Carlton's 2nd half of the season, ironically i wish riley would have had the brains to do the same thing. why didnt he play our youngsters. fast tracked their development. long term gain for a little short term pain.
  5. Robbo- Late 3rd rounder, early 4th Bruce - Late 2nd early 3rd rounder TJ - Late 2nd early 3rd rounder Why would we make trades that screw us royally. Even if u really believe that Travis Johnstone's market value is pick 35 (which is just stupid if u had ever followed a trading period), why would we swap a guy who is only 26, is our most talented player and at his best if in the top calibre of afl players, for a pick 35 who statistics show will most probably be delisted within 2 years and only has an outside chance of becoming a player of the quality of johnstone. ur an idiot. it's one thing to be fair about trades, but its another thing to suggest screwing MFC especially when it is wholly unrealistic. Johnstone of he open market, with his skills and ability to turn a game, would command ATLEAST a late first round pick and probably a pikc around 10-16
  6. Bode is proof that playing youngsters in the seniors regularly and with good playing time fast tracks their development. we should have done a carlton this last 6 weeks and played guys like Buckley and Garland every week. now we have basically the same draft picks as Western Bulldog who are a far better and younger team than us. we have f!ked up
  7. what is the point of trading bate. he is one of 3 youngsters on our list who has the potential to be an A-grader (along with mclean and sylvia). if we trade him, for say pick 15ish, we simply pick up a kid who might also have the potential to be an A-grader, or could be a miss and turn out shite. just makes no sense to trade one of your most talented youngsters with a huge upside who is only 20 yrs old. pick 4 pick hopefully be Cale Morton is he slips through (he could be pick 1). if not Morton, then we could go Palmer, Ebert, Masten (i.e. a highly rated midfielder) or we could go for the best key position prospect in the draft in Henderson.
  8. its been explained so many times this is getting to become abit of a joke. if melbourne lose: we get pick 2, 18, 20 carlton get pick 3, 21 richmond pick 1,17,19 if melbourne win: we get pick 4, 21 carlton get pick 1,3,19 richmond get pick 2, 18, 20
  9. it doesnt really make sense to me why buckley and garland arent playing. once again we have the opportunity to get another senior game into players who will be important in future years, yet Ward and Jamar are selected ahead of them. (Jamar is useless and we have 3ruckman in the team...why?) Riley shouldnt be surprised he didnt get the job. has refused to make any tough decisions on senior players and has reluctantly played young players. why cant he take a leaf out of rattens book and just play the youngsters bc they need to be developed. its not about winning anymore riley. ill be glad ull never coach us again u hack
  10. i have seen nothing to suggest he could ever be a number 1 ruckman or even a good back-up. his rucking is ok at best. rarely gets more than 10 hitouts in a game. rarely does he got more than 8 disposals. he does not find the ball. the only good thing he ever does is take a strong pack mark in the forward line. however he does this maximum once every 2 games he plays. he's just not up to it. P.johnson has a future because he is agile and skillful around the grounds making him a valuable asset as a backup ruckman (even if he doesnt take the step to becoming a number 1 ruckman). a number 1 ruckman is definitely a problem post White. Cameron Wood would be my focus. if Bailey wants to trade Johnstone, then perhaps Johnstone to Brisbane for Cameron Wood and Pick 24 (Brisbane's 2nd round pick)...maybe thats too biased our way but i know id do that trade in a milisecond
  11. Now that Dean Bailey is coach I think we can expect huge changes to our list at year's end. He would not have been chosen above other coaches for having a conservative position on list changes! I expect at least 7-8 changes. Already gone: Brown Bizzel Pickett That leaves 4-5 others to go: For me they would be: Neville (100% gone. 2 years on the list and not progressed past sandy 2s) Ward (Must go. 30 years old and not our future. half backs ahead of him are Bell, Pettard, Bartram, C.Johnson, Whelan and Wheatley) Warnock (hasnt progressed as hoped. he is key defensive depth, but ahead of him are Carrol, Rivers, Holland, Ferguson, Frawley and even Miller. GAWN) Jamar (hasn't come on as hoped. He is not a number 1 ruck prospect, and is not a good backup ruckman. I would offer him for trade and take anything for him. Otherwise just delist and promote Neaves) That's 7 players: If we decide to make another 1-2 changes then they will come from this group: Ferguson (keep as key defensive depth above Warnock, but would be close to being delisted as well) Miller (keep as key position depth. however definitely should be offered up for trade. if we are offered a 3rd round pick for him, he will be traded) Holland (keep for key position depth) Godfrey (keep for tagging midfield depth) C Johnson (keep as depth. still young and has some good attributes so could come good) Players who will retire in the next 2 seasons- Neitz, McDonald, White, Robertson, Holland, Yze, Whelan...some huge list changes over the next 2 seasons
  12. YM you have no clue. you just wanted sheedy so we get more publicity. did u ever consider that he isnt the best coaching prospect? clearly Bailey was a better coaching prospect. if he's better than sheedy then he must be bloody good. sheedy last 5 years- 40% winning ratio. recruited Cole, Heffernan, Camporeale...the guy has slowly lost the plot. essendon supporters have known it for year, and you should learn it too. noone doubts sheedy is a legend coach and a great marketer. he is still a great marketer, but is he still a good coach?
  13. Mark Riley summed it up perfectly in his press conference: "You saw the field of the last five candidates - there was a myriad of experiences and ages - for Dean Bailey to win that you would have to say ... he's obviously a very, very special man to come out number one in that pool," he said. His coaching experience is also unquestionably impressive: Bailey played 53 games for the Bombers between 1986 and 1992 and coached Mr Gravatt in Queensland before returning to Essendon in a development role in 2000, which brought a premiership to Windy Hill. He joined Port Adelaide in 2002 and was part of the Power's 2004 premiership-winning coaching panel.
  14. the board would simply have ratified the decision of the selection committee. the selection process has been extensive and impressive imo. (btw if nething i would assume the board would prefer sheedy bc he would improve off-field success over the preseason...bailey is more of a risk and thsi suggests that it was the committee and not the board who chose him. if Bailey was able to be the best coach throughout that process, being more impressive than all those great other prospects, he must be unbelievable)
  15. The way to get members and sponsors is onfield success. sheedy would be good for MFC brand. this is not a reason to get a coach. if we wouldv started to lose next season, sheedy's brand will already be deteriating. we should get the coach who will be the best coach, not the best at getting publicity. and btw, all my mates who are essendon supporters say that sheedy was past it 3 years ago and that they would laugh if he went to MFC. dont just get a coach bc of his name. if bailey was more impressive than sheedy he must be bloody impressive. we dont know about him much yet, but considering who he beat out for the job, we can take faith that he must be good
  16. Oh and also, if people arent sure about Bailey they should take this into consideration... Bailey beat out Sheedy, Connoley, McKenna, Bond, Riley, Hardwick and numerous other extremely highly rated coaching prospects. if he got thru that extensive process involving numerous tests and still came out on top people can be sure he is deserving. he must be bloody impressive to beat out all those guys. That alone gives me faith he will be good
  17. Very happy! the reason i would have liked sheedy as coach is purely bc of the sponsership and members he could attract to our club. however this is not a reason to get a coach. if we had not made the 8 next season, sheedy would have been seen as a failure and members/sponsors would have dropped off. The way to win sponsorship deals and memberships is to be successful on field. therefore, the coach chosen should be the one who can lead us to most success on field. Dean Bailey has an unquestionably impressive coaching resume. he has coached his own club, and been defensive/midfield coach at PortAdelaide during an extremely successful period. He is Mark Williams (arguably in the best 3 coaches in the AFL) right hand man. He has seen Port Adelaide completely rebuild their list since 2004 (almost half their list has changed) and within 3 years they are premiership contenders and 2nd on the ladder (having jsut beaten geelong)!!! Exciting times ahead. unlike sheedy, we can expect bailey to seriously cull our list at years end, which is must needed. we can only hope Bailey has a similar effect to MFC than clarkeson has had to hawks. we could follow a similar path
  18. we can pretty much agree that riley has been crossed off. conolley it seems has been also, but i assume this mainly bc of his unpopularity with melb members. the board will be well aware of the repurcussions of choosing a failed fremantly coach who demons members see as a dropkick. hundreds of members wont rebuy memberships next season is conoley is chosen. the board cant afford this. so that leave sheedy, bailey or hardwick. if they go for a young coach its bailey or hardwick. or those 3 candidates, i would prefer sheedy or hardwick. if either of those 3 are chosen, we can assume they will be excellent considering the extensive process they have gone through. i will wholeheartedly be happy to support any of those 3 candidates. i dont quite understand why people would be livid if bailey got it just bc he isnt a big name. his resume is outstanding. when P.A won their premiership in 04 he was defence coach and this year P.As midfield has been awesome and he is midfield coach. he is Mark Williams' second hand man. if he gets the job, think about how impressive he must be considering the competition he beat. anybody who can get a job ahead of sheedy (legendry coach), Connoley (6yr senior coach), Riley (10 demons assistant caoch plus caretaker), Bond/Hardwick/Mckenna (highly rated assistent coaches) must deserve it. they wouldnt just give it to him ahead of these guys willynilly. clearly if he is chosen he is an awesome coaching prospect
  19. im liking the idea of a young coach more and more to be honest. i think a young coach could take us in the direction of the hawks or portAdelaide. sheedy would undersatnd that he hasnt got 10 years at MFC, and would prefer instant success to prove that he can still hack it. this could mean us moving up the ladder quickly, but in the long run, we'd probably be better off with a coach willing to completely restructure our list. i want to see half our list changed over the next 3 years. then again, sheedy is a legend and the extra sponsers, and members would be invaluable to us at this time, espeically as we are really struggling off the field atm. we are seen as a basket case. sheedy could help us soooo much off the field. he's a good coach as well, i just hope he looks more long term instead of looking for instant success
  20. i dont think the 5 candidates have been told yet, so your source sounds unreliable. evidence: - conoley hasnt left melbourne yet. - harris openly announced the announcement would be made monday out of respect for riley - harris also suggested that announcement would be made after round 22 due to sheedy still having to coach the bombers in his final game for the club. would be abit disrepectful to the bombers if sheedy coached out his last game having announced of thursday that he has accepted a coaching gig at MFC for next season i think the announcement will be made monday
  21. some of my favourite ever demon moments involve doggy brown diving head first into a pack in desperation to get the ball... passionate player.
  22. i wouldnt make a direct swap for bruce, green or sylvia let alone add in a 1st round pick. just my opinion, but wells really isnt that great
  23. im giong to sundays match with a mate who's a carlton supporter. im wearing my demons jumper with his carlton scarf and he's wearing my demons scarf...should be a good laugh
  24. funny that you speak about premierships being ages ago...7 years ago he won a premiership and 2001 they were massive flag contenders as well only to be pipped by brisbane. then you look at melbourne...we'v made 2 grandfinals since 1964 and won 0 premiership in last 43 years. i think you should rethink your idea of what ages is. 27 years. 4 premiership.22 finals series. grandfinal every 5 years.
  25. what gives me hope is our youngsters from the last few years of drafting. if you match our best 10 youngster to any other club, we are bloody impressive, possibly in the top 4 group of youngsters in the afl. If people want to see how other people listed their youngsters and how ours compare use the search buttom on bigfooty.com.au. top 10 young players: 1) Mclean 2) Jones 3) Bate 4) Sylvia 5) Bartram 6) Bell 7) Pettard 8) Dunn 9) Newton 10) Frawley Other youngish players: Rivers, Moloney, Davey, P.Johnson, C.Johnson (+ Buckley and Garland still early development) That's 15 players i named, all of whom are of extremely high quality youngsters, even compared to the rest of the afl. add another 4-5 really highly rated top 30 picks for next season and you're looking at a really promising future. add a solid group of mid-age players: Green, Johnstone, Bruce, Wheatley, Robertson, Carrol. the main problem i see in our list is the 9 +30s, and all the mediocre dead-wood still on our list. we can certainly take much hope from our current core of youngsters. with another 2 years of good drafting, and slowing culling the dead wood on our list and i see no reason why we cant go straight back up to the top.
