Gambling advertising should be banned as its becoming a cancer to TV viewers. I only watch Friday night games outside of Dees games and most games provide little inspiration to watch.

The quality of media commentary is also putrid compared to other sports.

Gambling has to go Soon they’ll dispense with games and have wall to wall Ads

I sense that getting Billings would represent a concession that we’re unlikely to be able to pick up Harley Reid in this draft.

Don’t need Harley Reed Elite goal kicking talent is our focus STRAIGHT kicks Think mids go into contests man down As a result too stuffed to kick straight !

I think we need to get another club interested to get a higher premium from the Swans.

How bout Geelong maybe we can rock tease them a bit to get a bit of talk around Grunds.

Swans are the biggest bunch of vultures who prey on the misfortune of players from other clubs and want players for unders everytime.

    Absolute Scrooge's.

100% right Would Reid be a good get or is he cooked???

Went along last night. A few notes:

    •    Melksham gave a fantastic tribute to Hibberd. Said Hibberd was a man who would always “find a way”, despite not looking like the quintessential AFL footballer. Whether that was on the field as a desperate defender, or when the energy among the boys was dwindling during wacky Wednesday celebrations, he would “always find a way”. This led to his nickname for Hibberd being “the human loophole.”

    •    Hibberd also gave a wonderful speech. He thanked Goody for convincing him to come to MFC as the best decision he’s made. Goody pitched him to come and help start our “new competitive culture”. Credited his father for never letting him get ahead of himself. Even when he kicked 10 goals in juniors, his dad said “what about the 2 points you missed, I would’ve kicked 12.” His dad refused to say Michael was a better player… Hibberd said it only took an all-Australian, premiership, and 197 AFL games to finally admit it.

    •    Mark Williams presented best young player awards to McVee and JVR. Choco said when we played Brisbane, Charlie Cameron came up to him before the game and said, “I suppose you’ll have McVee on me.” Highlighted how the competition was starting to take notice of McVee’s talents.

    •    During the video tribute for Ron Barassi, they had a great quote from Hassa Mann. It might have been shown in other Barassi tributes, as there are many, so others may have seen it. I’m paraphrasing here, but essentially Hassa said he remembers coming to the MFC as an 18-year-old, by which time Barassi was already a giant of the AFL (3 flags). They were running out onto the field one game when Barassi tapped him on the shoulder, looked him square in the eyes, and told him: “Don’t worry. I won’t let you down, son.” Talk about leadership! RIP Ron Barassi. Man amongst men.

Obviously, people can watch the speeches from the award winners, President and coach on the MFC website but a couple of notes:

    •    I agree with what Older Demon said re Goody. My impression after last night was that his position is one of leadership, not just coaching. He drives standards, culture, and creates the environment for players to become elite. I recall Roosy used to say he wanted to coach Melbourne for the leadership challenge as much as anything, and I can see this mindset in Goody. I also recall Peter Jackson saying Goody’s job interview for the succession plan was different from other candidates, who all talked about game plans, whereas Goody talked about culture, values, behaviours, and habits. To Jackson, that was like hearing Paul Roos speak, and that’s when he knew they had the right man – our 57-year drought-breaking premiership coach and a real leader of the club.

    •    I would also like to add that we are privileged to have Christian Petracca don the red and blue. Goody said he’s never met a player who wants to be great as much as Petracca. Trac thanked the club psychologist in his speech and spoke of his passion for performance mindset, always finding a way to get better. He has flaws in his game like all players, but he is elite in everything he does to prepare… from the mental to the physical to the work he puts in on his skills, even on days off. Our next captain imo. Pencil him in. Bloody legend.

    Go dees in 2024.

Didn’t address elephant in the room Goal Kicking !!!!!What stopped us beating Pies and Blues Ok to say we have finished top 4 last 3 years But failed to execute when it mattered Pies have more elite kicks and can finish Agree with May we are a better team than Collingwood

A lost opportunity not a wasted season.  Our best was as good as whoever wins this years flag.  If you look at who's left we've beaten Carlton, Brisbane and Collingwood and lost by less than a goal to GWS and Port. Unfortunately we couldn't beat Collingwood and Carlton when it really counted.  Despite our flaws, and we have a couple of big ones, we are practically the equal of anyone left.  Goodwin is aware of our list limitations hence his gameplan.  We lack midfield polish (often a price you pay for a reliance on contest) and our issues forward are there for everyone to see.  That will take time to remedy - recruiting and skills coaching and perhaps an adjustment to the game plan.

Teams below us are coming - sides like Adelaide.  We will have some significant list changes which should readjust our age and experience profile.  I'd not be surprised to see us move back a little next year to relaunch.  I'd also not be surprised to see an on-field leadership change. Not advocating one but I believe Max has flagged he's not got long left as skipper. Time for renewal all round.

At the Clutch ,Viney turns ball over with a terrible kick on the right And Mcvee doesn’t get his fist to ball Game over None of that matters if Max doesn’t touch Oliver’s kick

Hibberd kept tabs on Eliot !!! We lost this match at selection table Grundy should have been selected He would have put a knee into the goggled Yank

Goodwin has to learn that finals are much more physical Grundy had to start against sooky Cox He’s more physical than Max and wouldn’t have been 0/9 in tap outs No wonder we started poorly Even use Tomlinson in ruck not JVR

    This from Sen...

Nathan Buckley does not believe that Brayden Maynard could have done anything else in his power to avoid contact with Angus Brayshaw last Thursday ".

This is why he needs to be punished. It was a ludicrous and careless position to put Gus in. It was a deliberate decision that only had one outcome. He knew the contact with Gus would come and worsened by Maybard tucking in. Maybe he could have elected not to go full tilt at the bloke playing the game in the first instance.

Do Demonlanders remember when Brayden’s brother Corey played for Dees Big unit and had a 🏀 background Think in 80s

Agree great fight back indeed Fittest side in AFL Worried about team selection Max beaten by Cox in first quarter and his dump kicks turned ball over This is where momentum starts Grundy in ruck to start would have been much better option

I don’t think so. We clearly took the advantage. It’s not the umpire’s job to recall it if we mess it up.

The last 3 times we have played the pies we have been down by 3 goals or so in the first 10m

If you think that's not on the coaches preparing the players i can't help you

Let's just keep doing what we always do then and fight back from 30pts down ffs

Mcrae is from the Mathews school of coaching.  if it bleeds you can kill it

It shouldn't have to be said but finals are different

We need John Northey coaching Dees He would have team at fever pitch to attack opposition We seem to be subdued when we start Collingwood we’re ready to kill Get a few more aggressive players in team Dean Chiron like

The whole week will now be spent talking about our dysfunctional forward line and it's up to the boss to figure out how to reconfigure. and with van Rooyen a monte to be out, we have to do so.

But to me, Grundy has to play - yes we all know he's not a forward but he allows us to use Gawny up there for a little bit and he is a big body to try and spoil. With Brown unfit, he's just got to play. He's also a tackler and we will need that with Brayshaw out.

The other change is that we have to go back to playing Trac up there for more minutes - yes I know he is a clearance beast, but we have cover in that department with Sparrow and Viney and Rivers if we want, but we don't have an option now - we need someone to kick goals and Trac and Fritter and Kozzy are our three most likely.

To me our seven forwards are: Fritsch, Kozzy, Trac, Grundy, ANB and then a decision on whether we play Spargo or go radical with the pace of Moniz-Wakefield instead of Chandler. And as much as people will hate it - Harmes has to play as well - unfortunately at finals time you need a mix of grunt and Chandler is classy, but just not physical enough for night games. Harmes is. The sub can be T-Mac - yes he's too slow, but at least with the pace off the game, he may be able to make an impact after half time and he at least can also play defence if we get an injury.

I also left out Smith, but we just have to add him to our defence - we need his pace to help counter the over the back play that Papley (if Swans win) or Motlop (if Blues win) that the Pies exploited and the good thing is we can still send him forward if things aren't working - just as he should have been sent back in the first term against the Pies. You are allowed to swap players mid-game Goody! And by sending Rivers into the midfield rotation, we make room for Smith who can play on bigs or smalls.

The only other player in doubt is Salem - he really has just not been able to get back to his 2021 form, but it's now probably too late to make the hard call on him.

Out: Brayshaw, Van Rooyen (susp), Chandler, T-Mac, Lawrie (sub)

    In: Jordon, Grundy, Spargo, Harmes

    Sub: T-Mac

    B: McVee May Smith

    HB: Bowey Lever Hibberd

    C: Langon Sparrow Hunter

    HF: ANB Grundy Harmes

    F: Kozzie Fritsch Petracca

    Ru: Gawn Oliver Viney

Int: Spargo (fwd), Rivers (mid), Jordon (mid) Salem (def)

    Sub: T-Mac

Concur with these changes Grundy in makes it easier for Max to run out game Conditions helped pies but we Must kick goals!!!
