Coniglio has turned things around this year, but the Giants will lose young talent due to his contract.

It’s a shame. He’s a great bloke too, good leader.

And if it was in isolation it might be ok but they have Whitfield, Kelly, Greene and Coniglio on $900+. Essentially, we pay less for Oliver, Petracca, May, and Gawn.

Can someone explain to me what the hesitation is for signing players on 5+ year contracts?

We now have multiple Trac, Oliver and now AG but what is the problem, salary cap space in the future injury costing one player a season or two? Isn't signing longer deals allowing Melbourne to lower the amount they pay the players?

Stephen Coniglio would be the cause for pause.

They are no brainers for me because you avoid a bidding war in the future and we basically can assure recruits and coaches that you have this talent for the decade so why wouldn’t you want to be here.

Injuries are brought up as a reason not to do this but they happen, it’s not like we wouldn’t keep a 30 year old Oliver if he did his knee (touch wood).

Great news but kinda weird comments from him on SEN the other day in hindsight!

Only if you read into his comments. The text was there - it’s a big decision, he will make it when he wants to, he has his own desires for his future.

Evidently, he wants to play for the Melbourne footy club and with some pretty good players for the rest of his career.

I'm having trouble reconciling the Gus we've seen over the last few years (heart and soul, play any role the team needs and put his body on the line) with the me, me, me Gus that's been portrayed on this thread.

I'm not saying it's not true. But it just doesn't feel right to me.

I still think this is a due diligence, and eventually he'll sign on. And it's up to the club to make sure they manage the cap for whoever else they need to sign

I don’t think there is a problem with Gus ensuring the last big contract he signs is the right one for him. He signed on last time in the middle of his 4th in the Brownlow midfield performance and would be taking a sizeable pay cut to stay with us considering that he wouldn’t be in our top 10 most important players. You just can’t pay a HBF or a wing $700k+. Which is what I suspect is near to what he is on. Plus he would prefer to play midfield.

I think he stays too but I understand the delay till when he actually becomes a restricted FA.

As often happens, I think people are getting too caught up in the 'wet weather'.

Looks like showers in the early morning but dry by late arvo. 17 degrees most of the arvo, don't reckon the weather will be a factor.

Half the ground doesn’t get enough sun. There is not enough sun to dry it out, it will be damp.

  6. It is well known that he wants to play more in the midfield. He is a pro with media and isn’t going to talk [censored] about being in defence.

He even made a passing joke in a recent Gus and Gawny about Goodwin costing him a Brownlow for moving him out of the midfield.

Roughly equal. Gus would be of more value to a team without intercepting defenders (and at least theoretically more valuable as a midfielder if given free reign of a midfield with no defensive duties).

McStay doesn’t get much of the ball or do much with it but his ability to halve contests and pressure for a tall are both incredibly valuable to modern footy. Even more so to a side that plays like us. Even more so when the player who did that role for us (T Mc) is nearing the end and battling numerous injuries (although that’s a risk for McStay too).

I’m not debating this - it is beneath me.

If we do it all in one year or as a direct trade, then yes, I should've said that. If we use the pick this year and the cap space next year it can be a 2 for 1.

I'd be very happy with McStay for Brayshaw straight up.

You really think Brayshaw and McStay are footballing equals?

    That’s quite revealing.

  9. I enjoy the way we are competitive in every game we play and that I get to see really good footy every game.

It’s just frustrating that it is interspersed with sub par performances and boring footy.

Expectations rise and that is a part of it of course.

    Over it.

These distractions are certainly not helping our on field performance.

Flag opportunities come around so rarely, and I would be furious if we let this one slip due to all these off field issues.

Brayshaw isn’t distracted. He is in good form.

Don’t give the players the excuse - they know this is a business - they need to perform.

I also hope that is the attitude of the players. It needs to be. But the coach needs to re-think our system as well because it is predictable and other teams now have a blueprint to beat us if we aren't perfect.

    ‘Perfect’?

We scored most of goals in about 25 mins of gameplay on Sat Night. We won 10 games in a row playing a qtr of great footy a game…

Dont need anything near perfection, need consistent effort and pressure for 120 mins.

  12. I would prefer us continue losing if we can recapture our selfless pressure game. We can win from anywhere if that is recaptured. Limp into 4th with how we are playing now and it will be straight sets.

Where we finish is irrelevant; it’s how we finish.

I think Stokes is taking a lot out of Fritch being a goal hog. I don't see too much wrong in terms of us being team first.

We have had five losses, four of which we had a bit of poor luck.

Freo - May injured in the game, Petracca sick, Dockers played their best game for the season

Sydney - May out, Petty injured for 20 mins, Sydney played their best game for the season and had a great run with the umpires in the last quarter

Pies - May out, Turner concussed, Gawn injured in game, Pies played exceptionally well

Cats - Thrashed around the ball and we should have lost by more

WBD - Lever out, very even & high standard game, Dogs played their best game for the season, kicked 17.8 and had a great run with the umpires

That said, I do believe our predictability is a weakness now and we need to mix things up. Firstly I would like to see us chipping the ball around the backline a bit more and using both sides of the ground and the corridor. We also need to push more numbers to the stoppages to neutralise the outnumber. We need to get better output from Gawn, Jackson, May and Salem in particular.

Brayshaw just said on SEN that we are not doing the things we were last year.

Gus made it very clear that the position he would be playing in 2023 was a fundamental component of discussions he was involved in about his future.

Yes, he was very eager to ensure that he is fine playing a role in the backline and loves the group. But the subtext was text - his role will be a big part of his decision and this may lead to a midfield impasse; Oliver, Petracca, and Viney are frontliners and Sparrow and Harmes are part timers who are limited in other roles. I think someone is going to have to leave to make this work for people.

    And it may be Gus…

On Thé Couch said that Weideman is the worst forward line pressure player in the entire competition. Brown is second worst and Fritsch is 9th worst. What hope have we got with that?!

    What is Bayley’s excuse exactly?

  16. I will resist the urge to say I told you so to a few of you about our forward pressure being down most of the year. I’m good like that…

Pressure is about attitude - that’s why NM and WCE can be above anyone in anything.

The players have an option to lift and apply themselves for the last two months of the season or leave a golden chance to cement their legacy go begging; they are so good, that they can compete while ignoring a cornerstone of their game.

But losers always talk about competing, don’t they?

  17. In the bottom 4 for pressure, where we were first last year…

Thats attitude. I’m sorry to burst your weird reality where we are the Schrödinger's Cat of form - neither in form nor out of form…

But the players are so talented that they know they can get away with stuff and still win - well welcome to thunder dome because that won’t work against the best nor those with an axe to grind.

    Lift or get left behind.

Anyone else heard that peanut Craig Hutchison on Footy Classified twice now talk about West Coast walking LJ through to the pre season draft for nothing? WTF is that guy on about? Surely we can't lose out of this if Luke decides that he wants to go back to WA?

    You need to chill out.

Of course we can get nothing through an unlikely scenario.

But Craig Hutchison is banking on your neurosis firing up so he can get people watching and listening to his nonsense.

He is a gangster, and not the ‘fun’ kind. He is Jabba the Hut of the footy world and the quicker you help Leia straighten that chain - the better…
