With the increased capacity in SA and WA this is not a surprise. Combine that with Essendon and Pies having good seasons plus Carlton's late run. By % of population, crowds are way down from the VFL days of the 70's. (You can skew figures anyway you like these days)
GCS and GWS are attendance failures and don't look like going anywhere. AFL is a very long second to NRL in NSW and Qld.
Let's be honest television money saved the competition
There may be increased capacity interstate but WC and Freo were woeful most of the year and Adelaide and Essendon dint even make it to 9th. Agree as a % of the population attendances are down and the MCG now only holds 100k, down from 120k before they got rid of standing room. But it was record attendances this season. People are turning up to see the game live. They like it.
The issues for the AFL are the MRO whose deliberations seem to be taken straight out of a Monty Python script and the standard of umpiring. Perhaps the rules need to be simplified (somehow).

Given he’s a free agent, we only get a pick if the AFL gives it to us, and one of the key considerations appears to be the terms of the new contract. So if he’s not on big bucks in the new deal at Sydney, we may not get any compensation, bearing in mind he was clearly a fringe player for us.
Fascinating. Has the AFL never not given compensation for a required player?

Young kid comes to the club, just wants to be an AFL player, plays on natural talent, expectations are non existent and kicks the goal.
5 years later
The 'kid' has had 5 different coaches, been instructed where to run and how to kick, there are negative posts on social media (DL), body is sore, expectations are extreme and the kid knows it, and kicks a.......

I remember the talk around the kitchen table when he left for Carlton. And distance relatives were ringing up at odd hours to discuss what had happened.
Whilst always a Dees supporter I followed his success at Carlton and at North with pleasure, especially when they beat Collingwood; and they were great football stories.
I remember his absolute indignation when asked what jumper he should be wearing for his statue; Dees of course.
Rest in peace.

Things said in extreme anger are a sign of passion not intent. 99% of the time anyway.
