I can't believe the DL'ers leaving out TMac. I'm really hoping Howes can take his place, sooner rather than later, but the reality is that TMac was our 10th best player last year. I'll bet he's just as fit as he was in Feb 2024, and given we're unlikely to select Campbell or AJ v GWS, TMac is a second ruck option. Howes isn't, and I'd prefer JvR wasn't (used in the ruck).
It's really difficult to imagine a fit TMac being left out of this game.

Well, seeing as I started this topic, I should indicate that I have changed my mind . I appreciate that by Q4 NM were tired and had their big ruckman off the field. But I thought Johnson was a revelation . I expected him to compete fearlessly without much effect . But I was amazed at his ball getting ability apart from his v adequate ruckwork. I agree, best keep JVR out of the ruck. The best way to achieve this is to have Johnson in the 22, to let him ruck for 5-8 minutes a quarter, and otherwise ,make some mischief. At times at CHF where he played the entire season with Werribee. At other times in the forward pocket alongside JVR, while Turner is at CHF The big loser yesterday was Jefferson , I just can’t see where, at this stage, he brings as much to the team as Johnson . And I dunno where this leaves Tom MCD or Petty!
I think we are all a little challenged by these matters, at this stage of the season, with these players who 'might' and those that 'can'. I agree with your early assessment of Johnson, for those very good reasons that you put forward.

Final dress rehearsal before round 1.
I imagine we'll be fielding something close to our best 22 if Messrs Petracca, Viney, Gawn and co are all fit.
Those players available would then, in subsequent games, be enhanced by our 'now' very broad contingent of real novice class. Yes, season looking good, vibes in the bones, heads up.

IMV none of the key forward contenders are showing much except JVR who must play FF. Make Turner , Johnson, Jefferson, etc fight for their spot. At least we know we get a great contest with Tom who had an excellent year in 24, admittedly on the backline . Turner shows flashes but, really, how many disposals a match will he get? 8 or 10? If Tom plays, is told to move around to offer targets from the middle of the ground, I’d rather have him at this stage
Yes, but at CHB, straight up without latter considerations, one does see Tom (if fit and raring to go) as the best option with the best experience, and afforded the support of Petty; thus, we can also have the extremely valuable 'floating' role performed so well (intercepts, clearances, spoils) by Lever adding further mobility and opportunity to our strong defensive roll call.
Up forward Tom really only has sporadic success across a season - a credit to his talents - that may well be utilised in defence given that he himself is mobile and might well benefit in his delivery to the more mobile characters from HB and into the Fwd Line.

I’d love to get some more goals out of our small forwards not named Kozzie - so I reckon Jack would be a great get
Hopefully he’s available at our last pick 🙏
Might team up well with Chin in the penalised absence of Kozzie - the leading and support players must defend these two at the drop of the hanky when opportunities arise.

Trac, Sparrow, Chandler and Verrell also training away from the main group. Currently kicking to each other inside the 50 before attempting a running shot for goal. Trac with a couple of absolute bullets that sounded amazing off the boot!
Again, whatever Tracca does, invokes, attends to, wants to do is amazing.

I think history shows we perform better when outside expecations are low, so personally, I am rapt to be flying under the radar of the footy world.
The 'under the radar' status is a blessing well disguised; it assists to have other teams' selectors make incorrect, early decisions about their respective team profiles and methodologies. It may also reduce prejudicial umpire behaviours towards the Dees early in the season, so as to lessen the establishment of outright, season-long crud decisions that exacerbate fair play and related AFL privilege anointments. It's also just nice to stampede successes early, crushing opposition teams with confidence and surprise from a lower rung in public estimations.
POSTGAME: Practice Match vs Fremantle
in Melbourne Demons
Sparrow really did play some nice things, toughened up a bit, gritted his teeth, caused some damage and some angst. He showed mongrel and it suited him.
