Thanks Ghostwriter, Kev Martin, Harvey Wallbanger and all posters and special comments, good to hear everyone in good spirits and humour. Big day tomorrow particularly with 6 debutantes, I wish them all the best and I am looking forward to seeing them all run out onto the G Tomorrow. Go Dees.❤️💙

    Have a great day, DZ.

I might be wrong but this is definitely a changing of the guard moment. This will be a genuine journey. We might surprise but people should temper their expectations.

    Wise words, with fingers crossed.

Bit harsh picket. In the wet, you want strong second efforts for when the ball hits the deck which I think Johnson delivers in spades

Tend to agree, IHW. Johnson will also clear (physically) those gathering opposition packs in the wet, thus enabling first and second efforts for the mighty Dees, with bumps, shepherds and blocks. Tough nut time, mongrel motivations. Feels good already.

The problem with that is we have a stack of winnable game in the first 8 weeks against the likes of North, GC, Essendon, Richmond and WC, and accordingly we can’t afford to drop these games due to “teething problems” as he clearly articulated last night.

(Well we can afford a slow start if it’s privately a rebuilding a year)

New game plans, marque 'infinities' across the past few seasons. We need adaptability across the field of play, initiative held by the players themselves, courage and continuous pressure on opponents.

Great perspective PF. Billings will play an important role as a connector on the wing and we will all just have to accept he will miss some shots at goal.

With the correct encouragement/practices, he might (and is likely to) overcome the 'yips' with goal shooting, and it is agreed, he is a prolific connector and team player on the flanks; not as good as Windsor on the wings, but highly serviceable in the role.

I have a different view to many on DL and think Howes was quite good against Freo.  He had one howler in the first quarter but did well after that.  He had 9 possessions in the first quarter when the game was hot and he beat Walters one on one on three occasions that I saw, unlike Salem who got turned around when Walters kicked a goal.

His 15 possessions, 5 contested, were from 74% game time.  Further Switkowski and Frederick didn't kick a goal so their small forwards were kept well under control.

I think too many expect him to shoot the lights out whereas the FD probably want him to play solid defensive footy.  To me he's a lock in the best 22 because he's tall enough to play on taller forwards and agile enough to go the the crumbers.

Time will tell but I do think he's getting a bad rap from many here.

Particularly in the early stages of the game, Howes really does need to stay in perpetually close contact and coverage of his opponent. He has a tendency to create a flankish gap, straying just that little bit too far from his attacking opponent when attempting to 'space-make' in the possible progressions of Demon possessions. Man on man, he is quite effective, a good spoiler and has the mobility to break to our advantage.

Yep. Kozzie was his usual self. He’s never “easy to read” because he’s quiet and his demeanour gives nothing away.

Kozzie is like that on the football field, too ... he has a head full of tricks and footy magic, not giving the opposition an inch of predicting what he is going to do to them with that non-declaring exterior. Then, on cue, he does it! He'd be an impossible player to man-up upon. Onyer, Kozzie.

It's a ridiculous section, and he doesn't even understand how 'sliding doors' work - even worse is it doesn't even make sense!!!

With what he says, it makes it incredibly worse than anything else the inexperienced media collective may offer.

JVR just got injured playing forward and you’ve decided ruck is more dangerous with no stats?

Disco would’ve rucked if not for Aj and we’d have been very small up forward, that’s a risk, but not a risk compared with known outcome of being too slow if we go in too tall.

Max will never stop going back with the flight. It’s up to the other players to protect him by blocking their forwards from getting a clean run and jump.

Now we're talking, a little protection for Max is overdue. The umpires certainly ignore that need.

I'll need to see more evidence but it did seem like our forward press was pulled back a bit in the third quarter to give us a little more room from the turnover to work with. It also seems like we are trying to share the ball around more, especially by hand. This will need to be ironed out because we are overdoing it at the moment.

Couple of examples from the weekend: Petracca handballing to Viney when he had an open goal in front of him and Viney had to stop, turn and snap from 40 out. And Fritsch 20 metres out on a slight angle kicking backwards to Billings was another baffling decision.

Yes, KC, ironing out using lots of starch (verbal spray-type) is warranted when opportunity knocks; Hafey was once overheard: '...and if you are within range - shoot for goal...'

I’m still keen to see Bowey forward.

Tick, particularly with Kozzie out for 3 weeks, Spargo still not ready, Chin yet to fire in assaulting the sticks at present.

A serious suggestion: The team should sing the club song after a win on the ground in front of the fans instead of in the changing room.

If we merged all of the threads relating to our forward line issues and printed them out it would stretch as far as the planet Jupiter.

An obvious sign that for several years now, the coaching and development squads have been getting it wrong, consistently, preferring a 'hope springs eternal' solution to forward line weaknesses.

Highway to Hell would be better than Hells Bells.

HtH would be a great pre-game addition, blaring across the entire MCG and into the half-time space-saver just prior to our notorious third quarter onslaughts, and much better than Port's effort of a thematic that is wearing a little thin after many seasons of  implementation - it would tear them apart!

His Mum has been looking at properties in Melbourne.

If that is the case, I'd like to recommend a little suburb known as Jolimont ... parklands, afternoon shade, nice downhill walk to the 'G, all the mod cons and not a Collingwood supporter in sight.

Disco played like he was at a Disco and was largely MIA!

The midline doesn't seem to suit Disco, I reckon...due most probably to his height not duplicating that of more successful forwards and so, he has considerable need to move his body to the fall of the ball as it comes in, at varying speeds. I think that his best work is on the flanks from deep in the fwd line to the wing; he does have accelerating pace, is capably agile, directionally on the run and on a timed lead (a real strength of his), can take a few  'beauties' with the strong mits. Did I mention that he has a great eye to set up some fine goals?

Bowey hasn't been up to AFL standard

Bowey kicks for a clearance - at least 50% of the time - without foresight, without looking for a target, nor hitting a target - as he once did in his earlier days with the Dees. Heads up applies to backmen as well, Bowser, without declaring intent too obviously. You can return to superb delivery skills if it pleases you as that would please many a Demons fan awaiting an expectant result.

The old firm were back and firing, Clarrie, Viney, Tracc, Gawn were great. We won all the stats that supposedly count, clearances, contested & uncontested possessions, inside 50’s. But still lost by 3 goals. It’s only a practice game but I ask what value has the coaching squad added to our game plan/style over the off season?

Knockout question, EH. The preferred option still appears to be the long bomb and kicking to a contest - all low percentage in terms of gain, separation, providing the opportunities .... etc.

Howes looks too light on to man the big bodied forwards

Really not on his man - where he belongs - right across the first half of the game. When employing closer checking, his game improved from whence he could create spaces to utilise the ball.
