  1. Incredibly disappointed we didn't trade Bate for this exact reason. Not only would have opened up a spot on the list but also would have given him a fresh opportunity to play AFL football elsewhere, rather than spend another year down at Casey...

Maric seems like a no-brainer as wants out & is not under contract but who will be the last player we move on? Can't see it being 'The Celebrator' with our lack of small forwards (not to mention Maric also likely on the way out), and would hope it isn't MacDonald who was one of the few players of the Bailey era with a hard-edge & can provide the defensive depth needed now that Warnock has left.

  2. Unbelievable.

Great get for pick 12 in a weak draft but can't help but be concerned with the amount we'll be paying him considering he already knocked back an 'outstanding' offer not 24 hours ago...

Still, gotta admire the club's audacity in going out and getting their man.

    Well played Dees.

  3. At risk of incurring old55's wrath for failing Mini Draft 101, how does this make any sense? If they're worthless to GWS then not trading them doesn't help them attain O'Meara, it just stops them from picking up players/more draft picks for free. More likely that they're hanging out for the best offers - I wouldn't be in that great a hurry to do the trades either in this case, just make the other clubs sweat for a few days first.

I believe Oucher is referring to this article by the one & only Kim Hackdorn...

    http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/articles/2011/10/11/o-meara-could-wait-on-draft/

GW$ would hold-off trading any of the mini-draft picks this year in the hope of finishing last next year & obtaining JOM via pick 1 in the 2012 draft...

Risky tactic though as the likes of Port & GCS are eligible for a PP which would come before GWS 1st pick (assuming they finish bottom, of course), not to mention the fact they will have to auction all four mini draft picks next year which may result in inferior offers to the ones they are receiving now...

Like you say, this may just be another GW$ tactic to push up the trade value of the mini-draft picks, but after seeing the slimy way in which they have conducted themselves thus far, nothing would surprise me...

  4. Im fussy on this but believe daisy cutter is commenting on a situation in which we have traded our first round pick, and our next pick/ first pick is our second rounder.

I dont know if you can trade you first rounder in this case,

Would imagine it would have happened if it was allowable

Yeah that's what I was getting at with my first reply to Redleg- as the F/S nominating and bidding process from rival clubs happens prior to trade week, MFC will know whether or not they will have to use a 1st Rd pick on JV before trade week has even started.

That being the case, and assuming a rival club makes a bid for JV prior to MFC's first selection, MFC cannot then trade out their 1st Rd pick in an attempt to get JV with a 2nd Rd pick (even though technically that 2nd Rd pick would be MFC's 'first pick' in the 2012 draft).

  5. I suspect GWS would have doubts about priming the MFC to have O'Meara, Crouch and Viney arriving in 2013... Their (and their AFL paymasters) entire build and business plan is premised on GWS being near a premiership in 5 years when the next TV rights are up for grabs (same for GC) and facing a MFC midfield with those three additions (in addition to what we have) would cause them to pause and spread the picks elsewhere.

I was actually thinking that GWS wouldn't want to be dealing with GCS for this exact reason- why would they want to make a team that has been given similar concessions to themselves even stronger, especially considering both clubs will be aiming for a similar premiership window?

It would make a lot more sense for GWS to deal with MFC for our two compensation picks which they can then use over a five year period, as opposed to pretty-much putting all of their hopes into the weak 2011 draft pool (assuming the proposed pick 4 in 2011 + 1 compo pick to be used in next five years from GCS was to go through) and making a team that on paper will be considered their closest rival even stronger...

  6. Not true. Have to offer your next pick after whatever another club offered (which could be in the next round)

Yeah, but if Viney would likely be a top 5 pick in the 2012 draft if it were not for him being available as a F/S selection (as has been widely predicted), then what are the chances that the MFC will be able to snare him with a 2nd Rd pick?

A club is bound to bid for him with a selection prior to MFC's 1st Rd pick, meaning MFC will have to match that bid with our own 1st Rd pick... You just need to look at what happened with the Bulldogs in both 2008 & 2010 with Ayce Cordy & Mitch Wallis, where bids from other clubs forced WB to use their 1st Rd picks- clubs aren't going to give MFC any more of an advantage in getting JV than we are already getting (by having access to him as a F/S pick) by letting us get him with a 2nd Rd pick...

  7. Can you trade next years first round pick to GWS as part of a deal. Even if we don't know what the pick would be, what is there to stop us having an arrangement that we give GWS our first round pick next year and they give us say their 4th round pick whatever it is and we give a compo pick and pick 12 this year and they give us back a slightly later pick to get O'Meara. Then we give pick in round 2 to get Viney being our highest pick as long as we have traded other compo pick or don't activate it until following year. Convoluted isn't it?

Doesn't work like that unfortunately- MFC will have to nominate Viney as F/S prior to trade week. Other clubs are then given the opportunity to also make a bid on JV, therefore if one club says they will take him with a 1st Rd pick then MFC will have to match it with a 1st Rd pick of their own, or risk losing him to the other club which has made a bid.

The bidding system is deliberately set prior to trade week to stop these sorts of dodgy deals from happening...

  8. I'm sure there will be a clear structured OBS with clearly defined roles.

One thing I like the word professionalism being used over and over again by our new additions.

What I wonder is what impact the Andrews Report has had on this restructuring?

Surely it hasn't all come from Neeld himself.

But then again, we shelved that report and ignored its findings, didn't we?

    Didn't we?

    Caro...?

Well said, was just thinking the same thing myself.

  9. Thought he spoke well with a very direct no BS approach and a hint of arrogance. The key thing which has slipped through and I amazed the media did not ask more about was that we have assured he will be surrounded with a strong group of successful people. That to me means large changes in our assistances coaches and other areas. Would be great to see Buttifant follow him to Melbourne.

Hoping he will bring across with him another highly rated Collingwood assistant - Scott Watters.

  10. So what time is the announcement?

Haven't been able to confirm this anywhere but have been told it will be at 12pm...

Edit- Fox Sports News have confirmed they will be crossing live to the presser at 12pm. SEN also broadcasting it live for those interested.

  11. Cameron Schwab seems to reckon we will get compensation picks for "What's his face" that are along the the lines of what the Cats got for Gary Ablett - Hope he's right - thought he was quite impressive at the Melbourne press conferance btw - Our Club has shown a lot of class throughout this whole sorry saga and I'm quite proud of how we've handled it .

We were in a no win situation for most of the year and right at the end we could come out way on top esp if "Prima Donna Tom" has a shortened career due to his degenerative knee - I'll bet any money he reads these threads so we should let him have it !

We did mate - Band 1 compo, just like Geelong received for GAJ.

  12. Any teams want to trade an experienced leader for two high draft picks in a compromised draft?

The club has immense potential to bring in someone considerable. Look at teams like Freo, St. Kilda, Doggies. We can fill some current voids on our side with experienced players.

Hope MFC gets aggressive with these compo picks but remember that they can be used anytime within the next 5 years, therefore won't necessarily have to be used in a compromised draft.

Looks like any club with a comp pick will probably look to use in next year, though, as is meant to be a bumper draft. This in itself could devalue them if WB, Ade, Fre, Gee, GC etc all look to use their compo picks in the same 2012 draft.

I like the idea of keeping one for 2012 but looking to trade another to either bring in an experienced mid, or get our hands on a pick in the mini-draft (probably accompanied by a player).

  13. So if we say finish 8th next year what picks would we get?

Assuming no other team activates their own compensation picks, and Gold Coast don't get a PP:

    - Pick 11 (mid first rd pick compo)

    - Pick 12 (for finishing 8th)

    - Pick 13 (first rd pick compo which comes after our 1st pick)

Think this is how it works, assuming mid first rd pick comes after all other team's picks who don't make finals...

  14. I totally agree.

Jack Reiwoldt faced the media bloodhounds today, presumably at Richmond's behest, having to explain why he "flipped the bird" during the game on Friday night.

Lewis Hamilton was right. We live in a nanny state and it's pathetic.

Mark Webber said that about the Lewis Hamilton burnout last year...

  15. The president of an AFL club has actively participated in spreading gossip about a player

[censored], Eddie. You are the president 24x7. What would your reaction be if Brayshaw, Kennett, Jimmy, etc, ran around telling stories about C'wood players? Esp. if they turned out not to be true?

He'd probably come out with something along the lines of "they'll be accused of the Kennedy shooting next"...

  16. Considering he grew up a life-long Demon supporter, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't want to be anywhere else either.

His folks got up at the draft function a couple years back saying the family were all mad Collingwood supporters (apparently Jordy was a '1990 Premiership baby').

However, by the time they arrived a the 'G that night they were all converted Demons B)

  17. The formula is a secret.

No surprises there, because it would very hard to create one that was fair and the criticism would be incredible.

Exactly. They take into account what pick you went within 5 years of 2011 and how much GWS will be paying for Tom. So pick 1 only 2 years ago and 1mil+ from GWS.

That should be a Gablett like compensation. A pick after our first round pick and a future pick 10.

Last I remember there were changes in regard to B&F and its impact in the formula given it was open to club manipulation and or other factors and a greater importance placed on what GC/GWS is offering as that is a better indication of his market value...

    Not sure though...

is it true we definately get compensation if he leaves.. and if so how much????

Re compensation - just posted this over at BigFooty and dare say a few in this thread may be interested...

Upon review of the League's original compensation scheme in June last year, the List Development Group came out with the following key recommendations (which were approved by the AFL):
    1. The player’s age and the new contract offer to a player from the expansion club would be the key criteria used to determine the compensation for his original club;

    2. Greater compensation for the loss of a ‘top echelon’ player;

    3. Establishment of a committee to examine each compensation selection to ensure it did not produce a materially anomalous result.

    Player compensation statement

Scully will be 20 at the end of this season. As a second year player who was a first-round pick and played more than 16 games in his first season, his base contract for 2011 will be $77,700 (plus $4,200 match payments).

If he plays all 22 games this year, the maximum he can earn in 2011 will be $170,100 (plus a bonus for finishing top 10 in the club Best & Fairest).

    AFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, 2007-2011

If, as claimed, Scully has already signed with GWS, then the Dees wouldn't even have a chance to put to him a new contract offer (which would ordinarily be taken into consideration against GWS' offer when determining the compensation criteria for losing a player). Therefore, any compensation from the AFL would have to be based on the $170,100 (plus B&F bonus) he would earn in 2011...

Going on the rumored 6 year, $6 million offer from GWS, in 2012 they would be paying him approximately 5 times the amount he earned the previous year as a 20 year old.

If, as Eddie claims, the GWS look at front-loading to as much as $3 million in the first year, that would be approximately 15 times what he earned in 2011 with the Dees...

The head of the Working Group, Andrew Dillon stated:

It was the Working Group’s view that the new contract offer by an expansion club would provide a better reflection of a player’s worth, relative to other players...

Taking his age and new contract offer from GWS into consideration, it is hard to see how Melbourne wouldn't receive at least the same compensation as Geelong did for Ablett, even if at this stage of his career Scully wouldn't be considered as a 'top echelon' player.

It would also be interesting to see whether the compensation committee considered a club losing a 20 year old player drafted first overall (as a Priority Pick) to be 'anomalous'. According to Dillon:

If there was a situation where the compensation formula provided an anomalous result, it was agreed there should be a safeguard system in place where the compensation can be reviewed.

That being the case, perhaps the Dees would receive compensation which would be more commeasurable to the type of player they have just lost, such as a number one overall pick??

Who knows whether the AFL will follow through and actually enforce what they have said but going by that you would think we should at least receive compensation similar to what Geelong received for Ablett if Scully does decide to leave... Possibly more if they were serious about treating 'materially anomalous' situations accordingly.
