I’m hearing multiple reports that Melbourne is chasing Zac Butters. Doing everything they can to get him next year. Melbourne boy who wants to come home. Doesn’t love Adelaide - because, well, it’s Adelaide.

All you have to do is ring up Trade Radio, and the rumour will gather some legs.

It’s really not that hard. You simply stop players meeting with clubs or clubs talking about other players.

Of course they will be sniffing around with agents but the whole process is delayed if they can’t get busted meeting with or discussing rivals.

Sounds great in theory, but there are so many ways to work around it. How do you stop a Zoom meeting?

Player managers have clients amongst multiple clubs. So whilst re-negotiating a contract with player x, they could be discussing a move to that club for player y.

It's been said many times that a lot of the player movements are locked in well before the season ends. Then it comes down to negotiating a trade.

This is why the league needs anti tampering rules. There’s no reason for Pickett to cop this speculation now and for an entire year.

Its all so Craig the Labrador Hutchinson can make money from his pitiful media empire one click at a time.

Who on earth  is Michaelangelo Leonardo Roccaceli anyway? One of the leftover ninja turtles? For all we know he’s about as well connected to the trade market as Melksham’s baby.

Anti-tampering is too hard to police. Every club is guilty of it, so I don't see an issue.

Kozzy has had a great year and has developed nicely. still has flaws in his game and lacks defensive presence. Would hate to lose him as we would lose a major scoring avenue but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Would demand a top 5 pick in return.

Couldn't be further from the truth. Small forwards like Kozzie impact results more than a ruckman like Jackson. It would be a disaster to lose a small forward who has kicked 40 goals in both of his full seasons.

We have 2 X Factor players in our forward line in Kozzie and Fritsch. If anything, we need a couple more who can take advantage of our midfield dominance.

Are you expecting Spargo to take up the slack?

You have to laugh at the way posters tie themselves up in knots about Brodie Grundy.

"He's injury prone and fragile".  (Facts show that he been remarkably durable with the exception of this year)

"Yeah but his last two years were poor"  (Facts show he finished top ten in the B & F in both years)

"Yeah but those B & F placings mean nothing"  (Facts show they are a great indication of performance)

Which rabbit hole will the critics go down next, I wonder?

And just for the record, I'm 50/50 on the merits of trading for Grundy.  I trust our Club to make the best decision.

Disagree with your take DS. There are multiple factors that make a decision to get Grundy baffling. Most of these factors have been well articulated.

B&F placings don't necessarily reflect the quality of performance. A player may finish high in the B&F purely because they played a majority of the games, and other key players missed chunks of the season. Finishing top 10 in a team that finished 17th is hardly a reflection of an outstanding season. Anyone who saw him play could see that his performance had fallen from his AA years.

Think it's just the nature of this injury and him being on the verge of 30 that worries people. He does otherwise have a pretty healthy record.

That's more relevant than his previous great run with injury. We're picking up someone in their late 20's on a 5 year deal, who's just had back to back long term injuries.

To say he's injury prone may not be correct, but his long term durability is questionable.

whilst I agree with you he is a lead up ff, our gamestyle is not and has not been for the past 2 years.

We need a pack marking forward which BBB is not. we need someone ferocious in the air, which BBB is not, we need someone with some mongrel.... which BBB is not.

I still dont rate him,  hes got no strength for a 200cm forward, this however could be because of his knee, im not sure.

Name some pack marking forwards in the AFL? Better still, name a club that relies on pack marking forwards. The 2 beasts of the comp in Lynch and Hawkins rely on one-on-one strength to beat their opponents.

Our game-style worked in 2021, but better teams combatted it in 2022. It's up to the coaching dept to come up with a game-style that suits our list.

I know that you're talking about this like it's a bad thing but I see it as the opposite.

We are forcing teams that are used to playing a particular way, to play a way that's different to how they want to play. If we are forcing Geelong to kick the ball away from Hawkins and Cameron then that's a win. It also means that we are forcing shallower entries and slower entries, which helps us to counterattack more easily.

What Max allows us to do is to troubleshoot. If we are dominating the defensive aerial contest or struggling up forward then we can swing him forward, and vice versa. Max has gravity - wherever he goes the opposition's focus will follow. By bringing in a big ruckman to bully the ruck contest it allows us to use Max to exploit his league leading asset .... his contested marking ability.

I didn't see much evidence of us counter attacking from the back half. I haven't got the stats in front of me, but I recall seeing that our scores from defensive rebounds was pretty low.

Really disappointing to hear that we're set to recontract Jake Melksham. Michael Hibberd I can understand because he has been consistent with his form all year, but Melksham..?

He's last couple of games showed that he's just past it. Other then the Carlton game he didn't much in any other games and he was incredibly poor against Sydney.

Played as the 2nd tall forward forward so that alone has chewed games off Jacob Van Rooyen who once again justified on the weekend that he was physically ready to go.

He's going to be 32 next year and our focus needs to be on the next wave of talent coming through like Laurie, Chandler, Bedford and Moniz-Wakefield.

If we can get an extra list spot to bring in another developing tall forward/ruckman then surely that makes more sense then keeping washed up 32 year old forward flanker.

From a list management perspective, the right call was to delist Melksham. What Melksham showed in the back half of the season was adequate, but he's hardly a lock to be best 22 next year.

If you look at the make up of our taller forwards potentially next year, we have a lot of players with question marks. There's a lot that could be playing at Casey.

    BBB - Knee is shot.

    T. Mac - Had his injury concerns and is not getting younger.

Weid - Seems like the coaches have put a line through him as an AFL forward.

Joel Smith - Now playing up forward for Casey. Shown very little.

Grundy - Shown nothing as a forward.

Gawn - Shown little as a forward.

JVR - Hasn't played a game, but we have high hopes.

Fritsch - The beacon in our forward line.

Melksham is a medium sized forward, which we badly need. But he's also old and slow, and doesn't change the dynamics of our forward line. Very few of our medium/tall forwards apply defensive pressure at ground level.

I'd rather have chased a proven goalkicker in Gunston as an UFA, and not re-signed Melksham.

My take on the club getting Grundy is to always have a fresh, fit AA ruckman on the ground at all times. This year Gawn was on the ground 89%, Grundy 82%. Nic Nat plays less than 70% game time. Both Grundy and Gawn were injury affected this year due to workload, so not only less effective when they played, but also lost games to injury.

How about we give both around 70-75% ground time so they will always have a fitness, as well as an ability, advantage over their opponent.  This leaves one of them in the forward half around 40-50% of the time making it a bit less predictable up there. I expect it will also prolong the careers of both players.

So you want to rob us of 15% of Gawn's game time in the ruck, even though he's the best ruckman in the comp? Grundy is not equal to Gawn. Grundy is a past AA ruckman, not current.

And the argument that Grundy will prolong Max's career is pie in the sky.

  13. 1 minute ago, Demons11 said:

He has already said no to Port and Geelong are also chasing him

Geelong pulled out. It's just us.

And if Grundy was capable as a forward, do you really think that a club that is lacking key forwards would be so desperate to get rid of him?

  14. 18 minutes ago, Fat Tony said:

He has kicked only 60 goals in 177 games. He’s a very good player - in the ruck. But he’s not a good forward. And we already have a great ruckman who is an average key forward. Grundy or Gawn will be in the forward line for 60% of the game.

One of the biggest areas of concern was our forward pressure. So the thought of having a forward line comprising of either Gawn or Grundy with the following is utterly head scratching:

    T. Mac, Brown, Fritsch

    T. Mac, JVR, Fritsch

Jon Ralph “Hibberd & Melksham to get new deals “

Would have to be 1 year.

Not surprised with Hibbo. He's one of the few who can actually defend small/medium forwards.

Melksham was 50/50 call. Did well to get back into the team and play some decent footy.

Both would probably be on club friendly 1 year deals.

  16. I must be the only person on here that isn't that fussed with Jackson leaving, especially now that both WA clubs are in play for his services. The down side is we look like blowing salary cap and draft capital on Grundy.

If you ask any neutral supporter, they fail to see the hype on Jackson. He's in his 3rd year, and I doubt that he finishes top 12 in the BnF. He struggles to take a contested mark, and hasn't shown any forward craft. His strength is his ability at ground level for a tall, but that's why you have midfielders. And he could develop into an exceptional tap ruckman. But a ruckman who can't take contested marks around the ground like Max, aren't worth big dollars.

As for his decision for returning home, I fully understand it from what I was told. I'm sure some of the Perth media know the reasons, but due to their personal nature, I doubt that they'll come out.

You really don't understand what loading is though do you?

Just because we didn't see an uptick in performance doesn't mean we didn't load...

You're one of the best posters on here, TU, but this is a strange position to take.

Loading didn't happen because we were banged up. What?

Are you serious? Now you are trying to change the whole narrative.

Very few dispute that we and other clubs undertake loading of some sort. The whole conjecture was whether our 3 losses midseason were the result of loading. It's was binman's belief that it was a major factor, and we would steamroll teams come the end of the year due to our superior fitness base.

You and the other hardcore "loadists" like binman and von, believed that our fitness levels would incrementally improve until we reached our optimal level on GF day. Just a shame that we never made it.

    Spot on.

There is NO SUBSTANCE to this Pickett thing.

Kane Cornes said this on radio yesterday morning (Crunch Time). He threw it out there, Sam Edmund asked him to clarify, and he conceded he had no inside information but that the two SA clubs would love to have him.

In other words, he's made this up to start a fire.

Why would he do that, you ask?

Well, he's a Port Adelaide man. And he is a regular on Trade Radio, which stirs [censored] up on a daily basis to fill 8 hours of airwaves a day talking about pretty much every single player on every single list.

    This is A-grade tripe.

Kane Cornes' tripe is just the entree before Trade Radio starts. Adam Cooney and Brendan Goddard will provide a full degustation menu of offal.

  19. 1. Coaching dept mindset (arrogance to believe that we could defend a lead)

    2. Coaching dept game plan

    3. Players mindset (once it happened 2-3 times, doubts crept into players mind)

    4. Coaching dept team selection (poor structure, not dropping out of form players, not resting banged up players)

    5. Fitness (key players banged up, which has nothing to do with general fitness).

Your 2nd last paragraph is the entire point mate - 'perform well on the day' - what do you put that down to? Try and articulate it. Most articulations come back to something resembling culture.

People don't talk about it and most of you won't acknowledge it - because it's boring, intangible, and not formulaic.

We all like to think team sport is as simple as smashing the best individual players together and analysing back room videos to come up with a cutting edge gameplan. Video games have done this.

To some degree, some sports are like this - basketball and soccer come to mind - as the field is smaller, positions are fixed and the intangible variables are much more fixed.

There's a reason Paul roos spoke about cultural change as his biggest challenge.

All comes down to people and how they feel - talent a given at this level.

You can all bleat about 'insert player [A] kicking it to player [B] and it's solved. It never works in AFL and has been proven not to work over and over and over and over again.

But as I said, carry on. Y'all don't get it.

Craig McCrae took over the club that was considered a "cultural cesspit". And right off the bat, his star player DeGoey reinforces that opinion.

Fast forward, and a team most expected to finish bottom 4 are now in a Prelim.

If you think that "culture" is so important, then it clearly hasn't been a challenge for McCrae. Or maybe his players are just playing a better brand of football and have self belief.

  22. I think the term "culture" is the most overblown term in AFL. Every year the premiership team will refer back to some isolated incident that changed the culture of the club.

If you have talent, prepare well, are well coached and perform on the day, success usually comes your way.

For once I agree with Saty. It's twaddle.
