We wanted Grundy out. Geelong wanted Stengle out. Gold Coast wanted Chol out. Port Adelaide wanted Teakle out. Gold Coast wanted Bowes out. Hawthorn wanted Mitchell out.

    It's not a good argument.

We have paid peanuts to get depth players to complement the strong list we already had. Hawthorn paid a lot of money because they had salary cap to burn due to their terrible performances whilst we had a list with the contracts of Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, May, Lever, Brayshaw, Salem, Langdon etc on it. You're comparing apples with oranges.

Geelong wanted Stengle out. Really? We wanted Grundy out due to our own incompetence. Port wanted Teakle out because they recruited a better player in Sweet, and had Soldo and Vinsentini as backup.

Geelong acquired a 24yo Bowes plus gained a draft pick. Bowes had come off a long term injury in 2022. We acquired 27yos Hunter and Billings, who had spent time in the VFL due to poor form. Surely you can see the difference.

And you tried to argue that Hayden McLean wouldn't be a good fit for us as a forward/ruck when we acquired Grundy. How's that looking now?

But Taylor and his team are watching Reserves and State league matches. Not to mention drafts, so they would follow players going forward. Players like Fullarton would fall in that basket.

But I don't agree that we're failing - shocking though that may seem to some here. We have minimal cap space or picks, and when you trade in lower-ranked speculative players on low salaries and even lower picks for depth you can't complain when they don't set the world on fire. Every team has 44 players, and 25% of those will either never play an AFL game or establish themselves at AFL level. We're no exception. The fact that some traded players don't make it is the norm, not the exception.

Lamb has kept the list together and we don't have salary cap issues. Tick. He's doing the essential part of his job well.

You are kidding yourself if you believe that the addition of Grundy, Hunter, Schache, Billings, Fullarton, McAdam and Hore hasn't been a massive failure. Not one established themselves in the team. No other club has had a poorer track record than us on this front in recent years.

And nobody is complaining about lower draft picks being a failure, because we haven't had any recently.

It's also Jason Taylor, who sits on the List Management Committee.

You keep saying that. Jason Taylor isn't watching AFL games every weekend.

It's Jason Taylor's job to convene with all the recruiting scouts around the country. And I'm talking about recruits who are not in the AFL system.

Jason Taylor wouldn't be talking to player managers, enquiring about the availability of current players in the AFL system. And he wouldn't be discussing contract terms with the player managers. That's Tim Lamb's job.

Jason Taylor may offer his opinion as to the value of a draft pick, but it's Tim Lamb and the Football Department who are making decisions on recruiting players from other clubs. And that's where we are failing.

I don't see the issue with a stop-gap option like this, would know he's an in case of emergency break glass type acquisition.

Free addition, low salary. Don't think it would necessary hinder Verrall's growth, would help share the load.

Would other clubs be into Boyd?

What if Verrall isn't AFL ready in 2026? Tom Campbell will be 34 then. Whoever we bring in from the State Leagues will be low salary and a low pick.

  5. We are obviously trying to take over the mantle from Geelong as the Geriatrics Club.

Our motto has become "If you younger than 27, you need not apply".

As DeeSpencer said, it doesn't make sense. Verrall is still an unknown quantity, so surely we should be targeting someone in the 25yo age bracket who can compete at AFL level, but also has upside.

  6. I watched a fair bit of the WAFL GF, and can understand why Erasmus was playing. He knows how to find the ball, but his decision making and disposal is sub par. A big "No" for me.

If we're looking at players in that age bracket, then it's Peatling, followed by Hobbs.

Oh come on this is starting to get ridiculous. Now it's the List Manager's fault who gets picked to play. JJ wasn't good enough to be in the top 22 or 23 last season. He went off badly. Lost his pace, decision making and skill also went right off. There were many players ahead of him. Having said that they didn't want him to leave and tried to get him to stay. He left because he wanted better opportunities. The penny dropped after failing at one club and he worked his [censored] off over the summer and came back physically transformed. Swans had an opening for his role. He's had a wonderful season. Who could have predicted that Sparrow would be so terrible this season. So blame it on the list manager. Seriously.

As for Grundy. You can't be serious. We all know why he left. But yeh blame it on the list manager. We got the picks we got because Swans took over $700+K off our salary cap. We got an average pick 48 last year but we also got their 2nd round pick this year.

JJ wasn't terrible in 2023. He was starved of opportunities because we recruited Hunter, who was no better. It was a no brainer that JJ would leave on the back of that.

And you haven't addressed why we got Grundy in the first place.

It's Taylor's job to scour the country for talent. It's the List Manager's job to talk to Player Agents about the availability of existing AFL players. As the List Manager, Lamb is the one who'd know what financial terms a player wants in order to get him to the club.

The acquisition of the failed recruits from other clubs is on Lamb in conjunction with Richardson and Goodwin.

Was the wrong decision, both max and Grundy are no 1 ruckman in any team and that is it. Would have been better for both parties had we gone for a more mobile/forward ruckman instead.

100%. I proposed at the time that Hayden McLean would have been a better fit than Grundy. Had only played 31 games in 4 years at that stage, so could have been gettable.

You're right but name the ruckman who was available and wanted to come to MFC that they missed.  They tried several but which ones would come to us after the Grundy debacle

Brynn Teakle would have been an ideal pick as a delisted free agent. North picked him up in the mid-season draft and did well as a 2nd ruck.

l find alot of the the opinions in this thread to be unbalanced ... schache, billings, fullarton, hunter are cheap depth players for round 3 or 4 picks .. those picks don't typically make it and certainly aren't of any use for 3 or 4 years anyway if you go to the draft but we are in theory contending ... some say we didnt bring in a clear starting 22 player but to do that we need to swap some key picks and go without the likes of Kolt and Windsor which having seen them l am glad we picked them up ... mcadam is the one blemish but has time and we were desperate for a forward in trading periods where there aren't many available ... our issue is we lost depth in angus and smith, petty was average, and our 2 generational mids were both injured and not prepared ... no team copes without their 2 best mids

If our issues are so simple, why are we having an external review of the Football Department? Everything is rosey in your eyes.

At the very least, can you accept that we needed to bring in a mature aged ruckman who could physically compete at AFL level, in the event that Gawn got injured. Instead, we re-sign Schache to another year.

You do realise that those 3 all work together and that Taylor has a say in List Management? Also that recruiting doesn't stop at the draft.

Jason Taylor wouldn't have any say in contract negotiations or courting of players from other clubs. That's not his role.

If we're not going hard on this bloke then I'll fully rage

Probably the reason why the Saints have pulled out of the Houston race.

Callaghan is a far more impactful player than Houston, plus has age on his side.

Spargo played some wing in 2022-2023 to good effect IMO.

I'd love to know which games they were. In 2022, Spargo had 3 games where he got more than 15 possessions, and in 2023 he failed to get more than 15 possessions in any game.

As a comparison, a first year player in Windsor got more than 15 possessions in 9 out 19 games.

And you want to replace Windsor on the wing with Spargo?

Spargo is the most overrated player by Demonlanders.

Leaning towards GWS. He's a local Sydney boy and now that he's got proper midfield rotation time he'll most likely stay.

As per Fox sports a few days ago:

BIG BLOW FOR VIC SUITORS IN RACE FOR VERSATILE GIANT

Potential Victorian suitors have been dealt a big blow with Giants utility James Peatling expressing his desire to sign a new deal with the club.

Peatling had been linked to multiple clubs across the competition given his versatility but looks increasingly likely to remain in the charcoal and orange beyond this season.

“Everything is moving in the right direction,” he said on SEN.

“We are just taking our time with it, we wanted to focus on the finals and me playing consistent football because that’s something I haven’t done yet.

“Everything is trending in the right direction, and I love where this club is at so, hopefully we can get something done soon.”

The mature-age Giant has averaged 14 disposals, five tackles and 3.5 clearances this campaign.

Peatling said he “100 per cent” planned to remain at the Giants in 2025 and beyond and looms as a key factor in the Giants’ semi-final with Brisbane this weekend.

After just watching Gettable, Cal Twomey said that 6 clubs are after Peatling, and made no suggestion that Peatling had committed to staying at GWS. Cal Twomey is probably the most credible journo when it comes to player movements.

Seen many posters have crazy revisionism with Bedford since his trade. But he could not hold down a spot in the 22 when he was in this team.

Bedford was still a developing player who wasn't given the opportunity to solidify a place in the team. From what he showed at Casey, he always had far more upside than Spargo. Unfortunately Goodwin liked to stick fat with the 2021 Premiership players regardless of form, instead of grooming the next crop. We are paying the price for that now.

  16. I'm sure I've seen this episode of "Utopia".

"The wheels are in motion they said". I feel more confident of Babu Bhatt getting his visa application approved than the State Govt. providing funding.

You do realise I posted that because I thought people would be interested in an AFL related article on a website that few people are probably aware of.

The headline is written by someone who doesn't bet.

The crux of the article states that the AFL receives truckloads of money from betting agencies, and names people  associated with the game, who have sponsorship deals.

    So what?
