  1. Whilst I agree that Knights had issues, I think that the first coach after Sheedy was a dead man walking.

True. He was on a hiding to nothing taking over from Sheeds. Problem was if you can remember it was down to Knights & Hardwick a Essendon man. They decided on Knights because he painted a bright future of our list and Hardwick was the opposite to that. I suppose Jackson and our board at time had no idea what they were doing because we had Sheeds for 27 yrs.

I hope Jackson has learned from that mistake because Melbourne cannot afford it any longer.

  2. I heard he still told someone at the club "look if you dont appoint me now, Im accepting Adelaide this afternoon". Mick Malthouse was at his shoulder, he was at Pies training.

And no he hadnt made the short list.

But its just what I heard...

That's what l thought happened as well. Melbourne got in first because the Crows wanted him as well.

  3. Jackson was involved in appointing Knights as coach at Essendon. Knights lost the players after a promising start and the game plan was all out attack no defending at all. I hope Knights doesn't get the job but l think he will be on your short list.

From an outsiders view Eade as the coach , maybe Ayres as a senior assistant , McDonald returns to Melbourne in some capacity and some people fresh out of the game.

Only bad thing with Jackson was the Knights appointment which was a major balls up.

  4. PJ is also, clearly, a serious heavy hitter and won't take sh*t from any pissant journo - great to see how a professional CEO operates

As an Bomber supporter he was the one who made the tough decision on Sheeds after 27 yrs. You should feel confident with him in charge and l think all the FD will be gone as well.

  5. It's good for both parties that this is done now. No point continuing with the current situation as the game against the filth was a disgrace. It allows the club to focus on the rebuild which means getting a proven coach and Neeld to figure out where he is going in the future.

Don't be surprised to see him with Mick at the Blues next year.

  6. How does a team that is 'on the right track' lose by 186 points?

It's one game and typical Melbourne couldn't help it self. My team Essendon got smashed by over 150 pts against Hawthorn at VFL Park in 91 or 92 and we didn't sack Sheedy. For memory we won our next game and a Preimership in 1993. Strong clubs don't panic and bend over to the media , sometimes [censored] happens and you have bad day. Don't get me wrong Richmond and St.Kilda have a history of doing it as well.

  7. Don't people remember that Laidley quit Nth Melbourne because of the money being spent in the football department wasn't enough. He said it's taken a toll on him and he felt worn out , so unless Melbourne or should l say the AFL pony up with the money he is no chance.

Maybe being out of the job for a while may have changed him but can Melbourne take this chance.

  8. Guys like Malthouse would never come to Melbourne and risk losing their coaching 'profile'. They seek out clubs with good lists and stacks of money and then bask in the reflection of their elite coaching skills. Think Ross Lyon.

This is right on the money.

Melbourne needs to make a pitch about a fantastic opportunity this presents for a proven AFL coach. No proven coach would take on the job without demanding certain things from the club. A rookie coach would just jump at it as they have been waiting for an opportunity like this.

Think about it these so called coaches in the mix would hear story after story about Melbourne. I am not talking just about the media but within the walls of other football clubs. Even if a proven coach takes the job the list is so pathetic and will take time to rebuild thanks to Neeld and co for [censored] it up.

Under Bailey they were on the right track and maybe it was a knee jerk reaction to sack him. At the time it was possible to believe that Melbourne could push for a spot in the 8 the following season. Since Neeld has taken over everything has hit the fan big time.

Your point about Malthouse is spot on and Melbourne cannot afford another unproven coach.

  9. He was a Demon great. We should have kept him. Did he fall out with the coach? I can't recall. He would have helped us in the 1988 Grand Final! By the way Northey was good but he built on foundations of culture, hardness, development and recruiting laid down by Barassi. Neeld is building on quicksand laid down by Schwab, Prendergast, Connolly, Bailey, McLardy. Neeld however is not the man for the job. We should have recruited Malthouse. Now we need to recruit an established coach with a proven track record. Who will the panel be though? There is nobody at the club who can make the right decision. Jackson left Essendon in tatters. They were supposed to be the power club for a decade after 2000 premiership.

He was offered big money just like Scully and went for it. The late Merv Neagle left an Essendon team that was a powerhouse for Sydney as well. Greg Willams also went up to Sydney from Geelong , they were a decent team but they were never going to win a Premiership.

Jackson didn't leave Essendon in tatters , don't forget he made the hard decision to sack Sheeds which nobody had the guts to do. Sheeds time was up and don't think he is a man who doesn't make hard decisions. As an Essendon supporter the salary cap destroyed our team , surely you remember having Moorcroft & Heffernan at Melbourne.

  10. I've changed the title to accommodate the fact that Gerard Healy never was, is or will be a Melbourne great.

He left the club for big coin from Sydney and was a part of the Sydney team that was humiliated by Melbourne in a semi final in 1987. That's how I like to remember him - a mercenary in a losing finals team.

He might have won a "Bluey" and might have been a Sydney "great" but he's done nothing to inspire a feeling in me that he was a great of our club and to use that adjective in relation to the person demeans our club.

He decided to [censored] off after being offered big money , doesn't that remind you of Tom Scully.

  11. Lol love how you included Tynan, Davis, Jetta, Sellar, and Pedersen in your future list... tell me what do all these guys bring to the table thst is worth a glimpse into the future?? All will be delisted at years end.

Neville Jetta is on par with the Jetta at my club Essendon. Melbourne should look at Marlon Motlop who is playing in the WAFL this year and deserves another shot at AFL.

I know you guys probably don't have anytime for Gerard Healy these days but he said your midfield is the worst ever in AFL history. The modern game is all about midfield and players who can spread and you just don't have them.

  12. Man you guys sound like Essendon supporters when Knights was the coach. Plenty of supporters stopped going and wouldn't sign up if he was still the coach for the following year. The last 2 games under Knights at Etihad l think hardly anybody turned up in 2010.

Every AFL supporter and it doesn't matter who you follow can only handle so much [censored]. You lose your passion in the sport because you cannot see any light at the end of the tunnel.

I hope you guys get your wish and he is sacked after the Hawks game. Just remember Peter Jackson is the CEO atm and he was behind the Knights appointment at Essendon. So he could be in the running to take over next year.

My favourite to get the job next year is Rodney Eade.

  13. A DEFIANT Mark Neeld asked for his rebuilding mission to be judged in a year after Melbourne was largely uncompetitive in a 90-point loss to Fremantle at Patersons Stadium.

    LOL this guy

Hopefully for all Melbourne supporters he is gone after the Hawthorn game. If you think Freo smashed you wait until next week against the Hawks. I think they may win by 140 pts depending on the weather.

Not only for Dee supporters but put Viney in as coach again and get rid of this imposter who isn't an AFL standard coach. He won't be at the club next year so why continue to put all Melbourne supporters through pain every week until the end of the season. Cut your losses and try to build on something for the 2014 season.

As my mate says he has more interest in Casey than watching that dribble every week.

  14. ...but would be worth it to see someone smack Jackson, sorry I'm from the old school were that's what you did when someone wanted to stick there nose in.

I would love to see Tapscott smash someone from my point of view. Nobody can question Melbourne having a crack today , hopefully the spread doesn't kill them in the second half.

  15. James Magner 8 disposals, 2 tackles, 2 clearances

Yes this guys been at Casey all season while our midfields been getting raped

    True.

What a joke that he wasn't on the senior list this year. He is tough as nails and has a [censored] crack which the team needs.

  16. Why would he, Neeld has just said we are 5 years away. Way to attract players.

Get a decent proven coach which will happen at the end of the season. I know that Prestia was linked to Essendon on draft night with Atley but Heppell drifted and obviously we are happy at that.

If you could get a deal done and doesn't cost too much Melbourne should jump at it. Just remember Essendon wanted Caddy and they went to AFL mediation and nothing happened. I think for memory we offered a draft pick and Pears or Hooker and they wanted Hurley.

  17. Bulldogs have been up the top and were unlucky not to make a GF. Now they are a rabble without any decent reliable big forward to kick goals week in & week out. They do have some promising young talent but they are struggling big time and it was the case when they were a decent team as well. Meaning they kept falling short from making the GF and got Barry Hall but that was a short term fix. Remember when they used to rely on Johnson as the key forward , so they still haven't address this issue for years now.

Last year they were after Gumbleton but he decided to stay at Essendon. They need to trade something decent to land a big forward otherwise they are going nowhere fast. Cooney , Murphy , Gia will be finished soon , so the dogs will have tough times ahead. It's probably time that the media gets stuck into McCartney and gives Neeld a spell because they are going no better than Melbourne.

I think they have 1 win in 18 games which includes last year obviously so they deserve the heat now.
