As a recent arrival to Victoria and a new follower of the Demons I think I have found a more accurate way to kick a Sherrin. I believe the reason why a drop punt is so hard to kick straight consistently is because the contact area on the pointy end of the ball is so small. If the ball is struck only millimetres away from the sweet spot it will always go sideways off the boot. My suggestion is a variation of the checkside kick and the reason I believe why these kicks seem to have a higher success rate is because the ball is struck on the fat side where the curvature is much less, so a slight deviation of the strike from the centre of the ball is not so significant. So instead of bending the ball from the pocket, if I'm kicking straight in front of goal I hold the ball with the long axis east-west. The ball does not travel as far as a drop punt or a torp but it is much more accurate and consistent.
