Reflecting on the Scoreboard in 2014

Goalkicking is quickly becoming the forgotten commodity in the AFL IMO, making it harder to watch games. Not just Melbourne but right across the league, take me back to the 90's anyday to watch quality footy. Anyway, whilst quickly going through our season last night in a gutted state of mind it is hard to imagine a way out, but we will get there, I hope.

Just some interesting stats, not intended for argument, but just an overview of our year so far.

  • 8 times we have kicked 6 goals or less in a match
  • 4 times we have kicked 4 goals or less in a match
  • 2 scores 30 points or under
  • 11 times we have kicked 60 points or less in a match
  • 6 times less than 40 points in a match

According to the commentary yesterday which I just missed, 6 times under 40 points in a season is a record for quite some time, anyone else hear this and can elaborate?

Our own inaccuracy hasn't been too bad considering but these scores aren't good enough:

  • 6.15.51 v StK
  • 4.10.34 v Frem
  • 6.15.51 v Bris
  • 3.16.34 v GWS

However having a look at scores against us over the year, have we just been lucky to not get more beltings??? Yes the effort has been there but if these teams had of kicked straighter then it gets scary. I'll take the wins anyday and the final score is exactly that, but it begs the question, we are still a really crap footy team.

Our 4 wins: (Opponents score)

  • v Carl 7.16.58
  • v Adel 9.13.67
  • v Rich 9.20.74
  • v Ess 10.17.77

Other games: (Opponents scores)

  • v GWS 10.19.79
  • v GC 11.20.86
  • v Syd 9.15.69
  • v Coll 8.13.61
  • v NM 15.17.107
  • v Geel 14.18.102

Anyway nothing new to learn here, just interesting I guess, its a competition wide thing and I just wonder if goalkicking at training is as important as it used to be, I know it was in my day. We are just lucky its not worse. Bottom line is we are a crap side until we find better players than the ones we have.
