The rule change which was most difficult to train for is not having Runners during play.  In the first 3 quarters there were large gaps between goals which limited Goodwin's opportunity to impact the play.  And in the last qtr there were only 3 goals which again limited the coaches ability to make positional changes, get messages out etc.

With Lewis out, Viney on for only 2 1/2 quarters, Max focused on staying on his feet and Jones with his perpetually limited on - field nouse, we had no-one looking at the 'big picture'; marshaling the troops to support each other etc.  The result was 22 players playing largely as individuals; the antithesis of teamwork and the 'esprit de corps' we pride ourselves on.

We can change team selections but I don't know where our on field leadership is going to come from.

The no runner rule may be the one that hurts us the most and probably the hardest to counteract.

On this point, I watched several of the other games from Round 1 as well attending our match and watching the first 3 quarters of our replay.

The broadcast of most games showed the benches several times with the runners holding up various signs with some fairly obvious meanings (such as Port with their “10” speed sign indicating 10 minutes left in the quarter).

Either our signs were not shown on the broadcast (and I was behind the interchange at the actual game so I couldn’t see there) or we didn’t have anything other than the runner and a sign to indicate player numbers for rotations.

Anyone know what we were doing signal wise for plays or tactics? (If anything?)

If we’re not running with any kind of signal system from the interchange bench could that have contributed to our poor showing?

Should we win a flag anytime soon, i'd expect our membership to significantly drop the following year.

What % of the membership are 50+ years old? Most will suffer massive heart attacks after the siren. The rest of us will either drink ourselves to death or die from lack of sleep as a result of wayyyyy too much adrenaline.

If I die at our winning Grand Final I have advised my fellow Dees tragics to go full “Weekend at Bernie’s” style with me for the duration of the celebrations.

Lee Gaskin is from Adelaide so that explains him.

Who knows why Barrett would pick them.

But seriously, most people on the AFL.com list are the Who’s who of “Who?”

"Club captain Easton Wood displayed the jumper for the first time at the Bulldogs' season launch on Tuesday night and the reaction on social media to the decision was swift and mostly negative.

However Iconoclastic's Ben Parsons, the founder of Ministry of Sport and a leading sports marketer, said such innovation was necessary otherwise sporting codes would lose relevance.

He also had a message for sports fans trying to make sense of the decision.

"You ain't seen nothing yet," Parsons said.

"I think they should be applauded for trying to do something different rather than rolling out the same mundane stuff."

Well ... you actually can if your club is owned by the afl ... heck you can even roundhouse that Muppet for good measure and it’ll only cost you $1500

And this was the official AFL app promoting the Collingwood/GWS game last year. They are on very shaky ground.

Can anyone explain why we need a goal square any more? It seems superfluous now....

    1. determines the play-on boundary for kick outs

    2. marks in the square can line up dead in front on top of goal square

Further to the above are there not certain infringements that result in a bounce at the top of the goal square?

The first scenario listed is probably no longer relevant but I guess the second is still possible?

  7. I've been there for a lot of good games but in recent times: Round 20 in 2016 - we finally beat Hawthorn.

I think I watched that replay more than a dozen times.

It was the first time that I could see what we were building was actually going to work.

Gawn was great that day as was Viney.

    Jaguar alongside an auto-insurer hehe.

Combining car companies and insurance seem to be  a thing with AFL clubs:

    Richmond had Jeep and Bingle

    Swans had Volkswagen and QBE

    Collingwood had Holden & CGU

And then there is the teams with long term car deals like Ford/Geelong, Crows/Toyota, North/Mazda, Port/Renault and so on.

Can’t recall Saints or Footscray ever having a car sponsor - not long term anyway.

I’m sure there are many others that I’m forgetting.

  9. Went to that game and sat behind the goals with a Pies supporting mate (really it’s his only personality fault).

When Wonna kicked that goal we were both up out of our seat cheering like madmen - that’s how electrifying that moment was.

That game was a moment of light in some dark times.
