Congratulations Axis of Bob, a pleasure to read a well thought out and logical post.
The current vogue for reams of often dubious data accompanied by near meaningless psycho-footy babble, needs some serious backwash. Â
James Harmesâs diagonal foot pass to Bayley Fritisch in the 2021 GF. Rightly deserves legendary status as one quality kick to premiership glory. Efficacy with efficiency seamlessly. -

The goal scoring position charts are very informative.
I am old school on this, a big fan of Edward Tufte. He would be happy with the work we're discussing.
Suggest you look just a little bit harder. Did you actually expand the Tweet?
Referring to Simon v Garfunkel 1969 (visually) "Still, a man sees what he wants to see. And disregards the rest."Â Appreciate the reference to Edward Tufte, but the AFL graphic is not in the same football park or within a bull's roar of Minard's Carte Figurative. Nebulous comes to mind, I'll stick to sculpture.

One thing I saw immediately from the score charts was confirmation that Collingwood kicked 4 goals from set shots outside 50. That was a huge difference in this game.
So you're prepared to put the ruler thru Euler? My understanding a graph should communicate a summary of the information (data) succinctly and simply as possible. Allowing the reader to ideally correctly interpret the 'data' with relative ease.
Pleased you've been able to glean some useful information from the 'graph' but to my eye the boys and girls at Champion Data or whoever put the graph together moonlight at Bernard's in Elizabeth Street.
old55 your moniker suggests 'old school' so I'm going to cut you some slack... the horizontal or x axis is the independent variable or time. The vertical or y axis is the dependent variable ? (wave a magic wand over that).

lies, dammed lies and statistics1 hour ago, Fat Tony said:Collingwood were actually very efficient given they had a lot o difficult shots at goal.Â
If this is the future of an enjoyable day at the footy good luck. Just about need a pHD in graphical analysis to begin to make any sense of it. Where to begin? The y axis (vertical) is ... and the x axis (horizontal) is⊠Parabolic curves, independent, dependent and controlled variables and outliers. Lines of best fit, plot points... Think of all the homework required.

Max is not a forward heâs still the best ruck in the comp and you donât stray from that
Score sheet from the night has Gawn 5 goals. It was a remarkable performance from a 2.08 m ruckman.Â
 Â
One goal was due to a handball receive from the centre bounce.ÂOne goal after Max marked within the 50 metre arc played on and kicked it around the corner from CHF.
One goal when Max received a free kick from about 20 metres in front of goal.
One goal from deep in the forward pocket where Max took the ball from a boundary throw in.
One goal from a mark close to goal.
It was the best performance l can recall from a ruckman in the forward line.Â
Amongst a decreasing number of options up forward lâd expect this scenario to be considered by the FD.

In big Finals there has on occasion been unexpected selection/positional moves which have blindsided the opposition. (BMT of course!) Jack Muellerâs recall in â48 is the stuff of football legend. Max has goal kicking form in finals, who could forget the â21 Preliminary final where he gave the sCats five of the best?

Firstly lâm wishing Angus Brayshaw a speedy and hopefully a complete recovery.
Secondly a fair and just outcome in the post-tribunal wash up. If the AFL hierarchy are truly committed to minimising the impact of concussion accidentally, unintentionally or otherwise. Here is an opportunity for the AFL to act with authority and integrity by sending a clear signal competition wide. Subsequently there must be an appropriate consequence given. To do otherwise would be a failure of responsibility.

I posted on this regarding the proposal to introduce a Wildcard Round for the AFL (which was rejected by the Club CEOs). Basically the introduction of a Wildcard Round severely advantages the 5th & 6th teams which will probably also have implications for the Semi-Finals, as the losing Qualifying Finalists will be disadvantaged compared to the winning Elimination Finalists (assumng the latter are the 5th & 6th teams).
The situation is further exacerbated by the Wildcard Round being played on Sunday when it should have been played on Saturday. So the 5th & 6th teams not only get a week's break but they play the 7th & 8th teams off 6-day breaks which could have been totally avoided.Â
Unlike others I have no problems with Melbourne resting fringe AFL players this week. Obviously they're going to do what maximises their chances of success on Thursday night. Imagine if they had played them for Casey and injuries/concussions had occurred. Much easier and more sensible to manage their loads in a controlled training environment.ÂAdding insult to injury, Carlton's first choice umpires appear to get a run.

Sound thinking. As the old adage suggests âDonât put all your eggs in one basket!â Then again âyou canât make an omelette without cracking eggs.â
