  1. Bruce turns 31 this year and would be in the twilight of his career. So the question is what can we get for him? Another Jack Grimes?

Out of contract at the end of the year. So if Sheahan isn't just talking rubbish and they are interested, and he wants to go, we get nothing - except of course a speculative draft pick.

Can't be bothered going into the formula - its all speculation and rubbish at this stage.

  2. Here is our draw for the last eight rounds

    Essendon at the G

    Freo at Subi

    Sydney at the G

    Brisbane at the Gabba

    Richmond at the G

    Hawthorn at the G

    Port at AAMI

    North at the G

Just interested to know where you guys think we will finish. Personally I think we will get three more wins to finish at 12th.

I think Essendon, Richmond and North. With Sydney here possible

  3. Special mention to Colin Garland who had lost his voice but stil made the effort.

Glad your kids had a great time!

In regards to your quote above - does not surprise me! He was extremely vocal all game on Sunday.

  4. Why is Martin ineligible, did I miss something?

You cant win the rising star if you are reported and points given equal over 100, under the sames rules as the Brownlow. See below.

Martin cannot win the Rising Star Award after pleading guilty to a front-on bump in Round 3.

The Tiger was not suspended after his guilty plea reduced the penalty to a reprimand, but the fact the original penalty was more than 100 demerit points makes him ineligible under the same rules that apply to the Brownlow Medal.

The AFL says Martin was nominated regardless to recognise him as one of the AFL's best 22 young players this season and to reward his junior football club, which receives a financial pack for every Rising Star nominee.

  5. Does this mean that the original idea was not accepted by MFC/MCC. Does anyone know. The worse thing will be if only a few people get behind it and it is an abject failure which will be really embarassing for the club and Jimmy. It would be better that it doesnt happen or happens at a later time when there is more time to organise it.

I believe the original idea was to create one big banner all about Jimmy. Correct me if I am wrong guys.

  6. And YOU were talking about the "adminstration we have now" and the "people back then." People who, as I have already pointed out, appointed Bailey and Connolly, amongst other things.

Point out to me where I said anything bad about the "people back then"? I never did.

  7. Link

Maybe Tony Hausknecht saw the thread on Demonland...

Correct me if Im wrong, but I think Tony is the one who was behind the idea in the first place on Demonology and here.

Congratulations on getting this off the ground. Although not the original idea which was first floated, it was a great move!

  8. We didn't win. That'll hurt him.

Plus Taylor Hunt played for the Cats who won, and he got just as many touches.

On the plus side though he earned one way back in the first few rounds of this year when he was leading the league in tackles and keeping pace with Scullgove in disposals.

If JM does get up, that'll be four for the year. Add a Jack Watts bag and we might have 5 for the year, equalling the record set by the Bombers more than a decade ago.

And yes, yes, it's a [censored] award. We all know this. Still fun to keep an eye on though.

My tip is Stratton from the Hawks for this weeks nom.

  9. what about jamar hitting the ball through the goals deliberately and costing us a goal. last week he did it against Adelaide and hit it straight to Tippet who gaoled. absolute brain fade of the highest order. you would have thought someone got in jamar's ear during week and told him it would result in a gaol - being deliberate and all and not under pressure.

some of the wraps on jamar of late....seriously.

It is what most good players would do in that situation.

Seriously, I am not sure what you expected him to do? It is not his fault whoever was playing on Tippet decided that he wouldn't man him up at the stoppage. Blame Tippet's direct opponent at the time, who should have been there to force the ball over the line.

  10. Big Teeth!

    Hahahaha! Good comment!!!

Knowing his professionalism - most teens eat ice cream and drink milkshakes their whole recovery from wisdom teeth. Scully however, probably only sucked on ice blocks!

  11. I think Cheney may find himself sitting out next week. From the sounds of things he gave Goddard a pretty good thumping at one point. That opens two spots in the side before we consider sitting someone out. Warnock will come back in, and probably Jurrah from his form on this weekend. We could also sit out Joel Mac or possibly Spencer. Not too sure who would fill their spots. Morton and Bail come to mind, but I suspect the club would want Bail to play another week or two at Casey to make sure he's fully recovered.

I dont actually think Cheney will be suspended. It wasnt late, it wasnt high. But who knows with the MRP.

I dont see why Warnock will come straight back in - but he may. However I cant think of a forward he would suit playing on, maybe Gumbleton.

Hoping to see Jurrah and Sylvia will almost definitely come in.

Bail is recovered. He is back from a cheekbone injury, if he wasnt recovered he wouldnt be playing at Casey.

    For mine:

    Out - Grimes, Jetta, Spencer

    In - Jurrah, Sylvia, Bail

  12. The people we had back then and not "the people in place today" commenced the process of rebuilding the list and renewing the Club. Their initiatives included:

    - seeing off Daniher and replacing him with Bailey and the appointment of an entirely new coaching panel, recruitment manager and key Footy Dept support staff

    - appointing Chris Connolly as GM Football Operations

    - total overhaul of the list including the dignified retirement, delisting or trading of much loved and respected stalwarts like Neitz, White, Yze, Brown (whose retirements occurred at the end of 2008 but which were decided at the beginning of that year) and Johnstone and the recruitment of the young guns who will form the backbone of our next premiership campaign such as Grimes, Morton, Garland, Frawley, Bate, Jones, Davey, Moloney, Wonaeamirri and Sylvia. The way this was done contrasts starkly with the Woewodin debacle at the end of 2002.

    - the Casey alliance and access to the superior training facilities at Casey Fields

    - the new training and football administration base in the Olympic Park precinct

None of this is to suggest that the current administration is not doing a good job - they are building on the good work that went before.

Freak was talking about 2005-6. You are talking about 2007.

However, I have to pick you up on a few points. Bailey/Connolly were responsible for the retirements of White and Yze and the trading of Johnstone. Also the recruitment of Grimes, Morton etc.

The Board of back then in now way started the rebuild we are hopefully nearing an end of.

  13. I will have a crack.

    Bartram - kicking ability lacking

    Bate - well shut down

    Bennell - glimpses of class

    Bruce - excellent first half

    Davey - lazy lazy lazy

    Dunn - kept on presenting

    Frawley - better than looked

    Garland - getting better weekly

    Green - did job quietly

    Grimes - missed his nous

    Jamar - games best ruckman

    Jetta - out for sylvia

    Jones - good learning curve

    MacDonald - attacks every contest

    Moloney - hard and important

    Rivers - nothing worth noting

    Scully - quiet but classy

    Trengove - looks a veteran

    Watts - showing promising signs

    McKenzie - won seven clearances

    Spencer - unnecessary next week

  14. First-I have read the article twice and i like it, & thank the stars above that Jim Stynes is our president, because without him the Media would have hung this club out to dry. Over the last 3 years we have had the Best Honeymoon of any "Rebuilding" club.

So we are plain lucky-But without on field commitment to the jumper from the players each week that Media Tip Toeing around the MFC will not last

Second-Why do you wish to separate the Board from the players? We are all in this together. If the players do not perform to their best, we shall never be a financial powerhouse as you wish.

I think that is one of jimmy's great strengths, that he is uniting the whole club as one-This club has been fractured since 1965. But without success on the field, even the greatest boards will not be able to perform miracles.

If you want MONEY and RESOURCES to be ongoing at the MFC, we have to be performing at a very high rate every week, and if we do get Thumped-TO BOUNCE BACK HARD the next week. From winning one gets good fixtures TV Prime Time. Top Sponsorship exposure, stadium revenue etc etc.

The Board and players should be reasnoably close in so much as they know they are all working for the one Place & cause.

Third-Why should we never expect to win?? Between 1954-64 You Bet this club expected to win. Between 1971-91 Hawthorn ALWAYS expected to win, and they were pretty good at it.

I wish the Jimmy Stynes Led Demons to create that same dynasty. If that is not your wish ox_5 i sympathize for you. But to be the Best you gotta be tough & ruthless.

At present you accept mediocrity mate-LIFT!

Imitation is one of the highest forms of respect, so thanks for that.

Have you realised nobody has agreed with you about anything you have said? You dont seem to very well understand the workings of the inner sanctum of a football club.

This all stemmed with you being annoyed at last weeks performance. Now you are saying that if you get thumped, that you need to bounce back. We havnt played the game this afternoon yet, so maybe wait til then before you hit the roof. Our team has shown that they can do this. I present to you the evidence of Round 2 pies match after the Round 1 thumping. I present to you the evidence of the Bulldogs game after the Kangas game. I present to you the Port game after the West Coast game. We didnt win them all, but we sure as hell BOUNCED BACK HARD as you like to put it.

Of course the Board and the football are one of the same. But it is very clear that it is not their role. A board, of any business, appoint a board to complete the tasks they want completed. Chris Connolly, Dean Bailey etc have been appointed to do this.

And nah, I don't want a dynasty. Why would I? Are you really that thick that that is what you gathered from my post?

You need to lift, and support this side through thick and thin, and have a little bit of patience. Cultures are not changed overnight.

  15. Definitely. Will be heading off shortly.

Hopefully we have a bit of a turn out. Not 'liking' a particular ground never really seems a good excuse not to turn up. Get there and hope the boys can put up a committed effort and raise their heads after last weeks effort.

Also praying for no injuries from game. Always worried seeing that moving turf.

    Go Dees!

  16. From fairy tale to season over in an instant. I know he's not the first player to get a bad injury, but this one would hurt more than most emotionally. Can't help but feel for the bloke.

A really good bloke too. Spoke to him a couple of times when he was playing in the VFL.

I cant imagine how Palmer would be feeling. A complete lack of talk and awareness from him in that situation. Damn unlucky for Michael.

  17. I just truly hope this board of People can eradicate from this club the type of performance we had last week & against West Coast.

But Yes Thankyou Martin for another great piece of writing-Maybe Martin Flanagan knows the reason why melbourne lose when expected to win????

First - the point of the thread is to point out what a great article was written. It is to clearly point out the beginning of the Stynes/McClardy relationship, how it has built over the years, their mutual respect for each other, and to show the Melbourne faithful that we are in very good hands.

Second - since when is it the role of a board of directors to eradicate the type of performance we had last week and against West Coast? Sure, they appoint the coaching staff etc, but that is nowhere near their role, and it shouldn't be. I would much prefer my board, who as members we elect, to be putting their efforts into making our club equal to or exceed the financial powerhouses of the competition, making us a viable going concern, providing us with the MONEY and RESOURCES to build a football team which has everything at their disposal that they can realistically need and want. With these resources, the football department can then work to weed out mediocre performance. But then again, who would have thought a young team would be inconsistent?

Third - Since when have we ever been in a position where we are expected to win? We do not have that luxury, and never should. Once that attitude comes in, from supporters, and from players, we are going to struggle. You do not go to any game of football expecting to win. Hey, maybe your expectation has led to those type of performances you mention above. No team should ever expect to win, and neither should its supporters. It only leads to complacency. We cannot and never have been afforded that luxury.

  18. Gee you did a great job of finding a negative out of a very big positive article.

Flanagan is a journalistic genius, every single article of his is so well written and written with passion. Makes the lesser journalists look like the D graders that they are. And once again he has put together a beauty.
