Does anyone remember Kim Smith who played for the Dees in the mid 70's. He was a prolific goalkicker for Prahran in the old VFA, and was recruited by the Dees. Only lasted one season, before heading back to Prahran. Tim is following a similar path to Kim, but hopefully has a more distinguished career.

My memory of Kim Smith is in the goal square at the Punt Road end with him literally head and shoulders above the pack trying to reach across to the ball.  Great leap but not able to take position.  Would not be Robinson Crusoe at the past players.

The Bull should do well with his dash under the dome.  I would expect the guys to execute the new style best indoors but would not be game to say it.

  2. I/C Dom Tyson, Dean Kent, Mitch Hannan, Alex Neal-Bullen, Jake Spencer, Ben Kennedy, James Harmes (Three to be omitted)

Keep Hannan and ABN because they played quite well

Keep Tyson because he can play C and HB not just forward

Keep Kennedy so that we can have a better look at him.  Kent and Harmes are known quantities.

  3. On the positive side, Nathan Jones was originally a poor kick.  Then he started kicking more goals then points.  Now his 50m kicks from HB are flat and centimeter-perfect.  I would have given him BOG last week for this.

In the meantime, the boys should not try to kick the ball to far.

  4. You must go to funerals to pay respects and comfort the family.  Shame!

I went to Watts' debut which was unremarkable for a player's debut.  I cannot see what there is to agonise over.

Bailey at times seemed competent but big wins and bigger losses.  He accepted tanking which I too believed scarred the players which such abject betrayal should have.

The management of MFC including Howcroft has seemed incapable of having an adult relationship with their senior coach.  Furiously brown-nosing while the team meanders and finally goes over the 186 metre waterfall.  A stout-hearted Board would have insisted that Daniher coach out the year.   After the termination of Balme, Daniher, Bailey and Neeld, the season just got worst.

I cant agree with that. Gawn's marks in the forwardline almost always come from him floating forward either alone or with a ruckman (or sometimes an unlucky midfielder) following him. If you play him as a forward he will be up against real key defenders who while maybe giving up some size will be much better at nullifying him and kill him on the rebound.

Maybe.  I seem to recall him also marking in a pack of various defenders and shall watch him with interest in the square under the roof.

yeah, i'd forgotten jako played in round 1 before that long stint in the 2s

Picked at CHF because Bennett was at FF.  Listed in the Record at 188cm but like Piggy looked shorter being built like an OomPahLoompah.  They only played one good game together which was against the Swans at the SCG each kicking 7 or 8 goals from FF and FP.  Typically he had 17 kicks from FF, 8 points and then 9 goals.

Overall, it would have been better to keep Bennett but MFC are drama queens (and kings) favouring Smith Snr and Jnr, Icke/Wight as KPP's

Why on earth would we take him out of the middle for any more than a few minutes to rest? Sure he might be protected a little from injury but at what cost?

If we had two Gawns, one would be taking 6 marks a game in the goal square.  Pity Spencer is no Gawn in the ruck.

Melksham is a very ordinary footballer. Too many are getting sucked in by his story and the fact he's a new recruit. He is depth only. Hibberd is a much better recruit.

Not what we saw against the Blues.  The other way around.

  9. B: Jetta - T. McDonald - O. McDonald
HB: Hunt - Pederson - Lewis
    C:  Salem - Melksham - Watts
    HF: Petracca (also mid-field) - Weideman - Neal-Bullen
    F: Vandenberg - Hogan - Vince
Foll: Gawn - Jones - Viney
    I/C: - Brayshaw - Oliver - Bugg - Stretch
    Emerg: Garlett -Tyson - Kent

    Vince forward due dodgy kicking

Petracca to spend some time at  CHF

Pederson and Watts to second ruck and fill in at CHB

Weideman picked for potential, say later in the second half.

Garlett can't be trusted to put in whilst on the field.

Hibberd is still off the pace.

It is interesting that people are picking Hogan at CHF.  I would rather have him at FF putting the wind up three defenders although I note that  Goodwin is slimming him down.   When the Melbourne FB forced Richo et al. out to the wing to mark, it was counted as a win.

Spencer tried but just provided a contest.

  10. I may have the memory of a gold-err-swimming-thingey but my only major issue with the AFL response to the fiasco is if the CEO actually did try to warn the Bummers/T'Hird.

Hird Snr and others berated the AFL for silence after the great man took some meds after a lady fan let him know what she thought of his treatment of the players.

The AFL was admirably restrained in not reiterating Hird's dangerous sins in view of his delicate state.

Goddard had a bleat on twitter suggesting FitzPatrick should not sleep well.  I hold the same fears for Goddard in case he can't work out how to undo his belt and take his shoes off.

Dank emailed Hird "this is the good stuff.  You should/will? really notice a difference"  i.e. performance would be enhanced and therefore these were performance-enhancing.

    Hird is a pitiful fool..

Moved it around a bit but the 120's seems a bit slow.

  12. B: Pat MacKenna, Tom McDonald, Michael Hibberd
HB: Jayden Hunt, Oscar McDonald, Neville Jetta
C: Dom Tyson, Nathan Jones, Christian Petracca
HF: Dean Kent, Sam Weideman, Bernie Vince
F:  Christian Salem, Jesse Hogan, Jack Watts
R: Max Gawn, Jordan Lewis, Jack Viney
INT: Jake Melksham, Angus Brayshaw, Clayton Oliver, Cam Pedersen
EMERG: Tomas Bugg, James Harmes, Sam Frost

    modified from the paper

Garlett kicks some goals but provides no help to anyone else to go forward and/or score.  So if he doesn't come good in the VFL which he probably won't, he is all washed up.

It would be nice to get the taller Frost down back but the others provide more run.  MacKenna looked OK in his highlight tape especially his kicking from Half Back and I am expecting him and the Recruiters to turn up trumps again during the preseason.

Hogan needs to stay within 50 metres of goal unlike the Carlton game.

Vince needs to be down forward where the turnover won't hurt as much.
