and that's why we need to get rid of the compromised fixture.

Getting rid of the “fixture” would crush the equalisation fund. Crush that and teams like St Kilda, Bulldogs, North and Melbourne are finished.

The likes of Collingwood and Richmond will only grow more powerful if it continues.

That’s not a debate you are going to win, you don’t have the numbers. First, you need to build your crowds, memberships & net profits - all very trivial I understand.

AFL assisted you in survival by selecting CEO, Board and facilitating key coaching appointments.

But is over to you now - best of luck.

Yeah well next year's wish list ad better have the following.

    1. No game at Geelong..

    2. No game against West Coast in Perth.

    3. Home games against larger supported Melbourne clubs at the "G" as well as the above.

Last years performance and this year's demand it.

Yeah well it’s over to you as a supporter group.

A/ to get your club to adopt those requests

    B/ double your memberships

C/ get off AFL life support and function like a successful business

There is a lot of pent up enthusiasm for the first game each year. The Carlton factor in that game is irrelevant aside from it being an AFL gift.

Ironic we are having this discussion a week before the QB game.

However, every year AFL accepts requests from ALL clubs for their preferences

    mfc request

1/ 2 home games in NT against interstate teams financial reason

    2/ Anzac Eve

3/ QB home game at MCG

The AFL does the best it can with ALL 18 clubs requests - will it please all supporters of all 18 teams - No

Dont forget MFC current administration also supports the AFL rights to maximise revenue from its fixture arrangements.

So that bit where you said you earn your fixture was rubbish?

Nope - you earn the fixture over many years not 6 games of fantastic onfield results. Think the AFL prefers to have a proven history - think first game of the season every year.

Completely disagree. I think he started at the perfect club Davey Dee. No only did he have the chance to be mentored by Roos who is, at the very least, a master  in terms of managing people, but he also was at the pointy end of some really good list management. The position he took on was plump...and he is enhancing his career by the week.  I look over at the gold coast at Dew,  who l still believe turned our offer down, and think THAT was the wrong club for a first time coach. Yes we're success starved and impatient.....as we should be!! Of course we WANT a flag but I dont think we're going to sack him if we dont win a flag in the next 2 or 3  years either.

While he is winning he will be fine, but as a community you are too thin skinned too fragile.

When Jackson goes a new CEO will have his hands full. I have seen no evidence you have the support structures in place to run the course. Actually, much of the written evidence in this place & places like Facebook ( assuming you believe it ) suggests your supporter base has a long, long way to go.

AFL has some very interesting choices ahead.

  6. How Good is Goodwin?

Solid, young AFL coach with much still to learn, has done very little wrong in his playing career, assistant coaching roles and the start to his senior career. Calm, collective and thoughtful with a solid consistent message infront of the media. Developing nicely and has the potential to be a superstar if given time to develop into the role.

However, started at the wrong club for a first time coach - many MFC supporters are impatient and doubt he gets the time to develop compared to him joining a bigger club. Immediate results will make or break him once Jackson leaves.

Essendon I can understand. They made finals last year and appeared to be on an upward trajectory.

Travis Auld was on 3AW on Saturday and grilled about the Friday/Saturday night scheduling and made a complete hash of it. He argued very unconvincingly that it had something to do with scheduling difficulties primarily associated with ANZAC Day and ANZAC eve. (In my view that might affect the two or three weeks before and after 25 April, but not the whole year.) The 3AW panel (Tim Lane, Caroline Wilson, Leigh Matthews and Jimmy Bartel) were not persuaded by his argument at all.

The AFL in a 18 team national competition with only 1 premiership will never please all of the clubs supporters all of the time. You earn your fixture, your supporters earn respect from the AFL by actions not words.

  8. Another fantastic win - was really proud of the boys how they overcome the early setbacks and just powered away to win comfortably.

Hopefully, just another game to add to the bielf -  that success is a combination of hard work and a positive mind set.

That's great.  Some would agree, others would call him a troll.  I fall in the latter.

And him 'bleeding red & blue' might make him a better supporter than you, but it doesn't make him better than the rest.

Yeah I don’t see it that way - I think all he ever does is try and share his love for the club.

Now, Saty and his partner have not always seen eye to eye with me either - but I think I was more at fault there. I’ve learnt more from meeting him than he knows.

    But each to their own

No one is a better supporter than anyone else.  We all contribute in our own ways, whether that be through attendance, membership, posting here or wearing your gear into work on a Monday win, lose or draw.  While I don't agree with some posters on here, that doesn't mean I would consider them any less of a supporter than me or anyone else.

Ok fair enough well said, but I’m not walking away from saying Saty is one of the most loyal, passionate Demons supporters you will ever meet. He and his lovely partner go to nearly ever game for as long as I can remember- he bleeds red & blue.

So he is 10 x a better supporter than I will ever be.

The last month shows how we need to be patient - a couple of bad losses and we had some supporters, who now look rather stupid, questioning everything as if the club was caving in.  Now look at us.  Just goes to show that we don't need to be negative about every decision made and be able to see the long term view, not just the short term.

Yeah but some people have been saying that for the last 4 years - it’s the same small group in nearly every thread - same tactics - just they attack another poster.

I don’t think they will ever learn. Saty, is one of the most loyal passionate MFC supporters you would ever meet - he is 10 times a better supporter than me and may I add the “trolls” attacking him.

    1) Not in the eyes of the AFL and Ch7:  membership/supporter numbers are the basis of their fixtures (despite their protestations to the contrary) for FTA premium time slots - Count the Thur, Fri and Sat night FTA slots for Ess, Coll, Rich, Carlt, Hawks even in their non-performing years.  Simply, Ch 7 want numbers to sell adv time to their sponsors.

Also, check out the venues those clubs play at - you rarely see them at low capacity grounds like Kardinia Park or Docklands when they play each other.  They play at our home ground while we have to sell games interstate or play at Docklands.

    2) Not in the eyes of sponsors:  club sponsors want numbers to market their products to.   The more the merrier.  The profitability of the members is of little interest to them.  We make a lot more more money from sponsors than members so they are critical to our financial well being.  Again, look at the sponsorship revenue for the aforementioned clubs.  It is big because they have a lot of members!

    3) Not in the eyes of clubs: once they have you as a member, even as an Armchair, or 3 gamer they can work to make you a full member and get your family on board.  (Without those membership options we may not have any country or interstate members).  Also, members buy merchandise, adding revenue to the club and revenue and advertising to our sponsors- anyone buy New Balance gear recently?

    4) The more members we have the more people at games and so gate revenue goes up.

Looking at 'Net Profit' is a very limited view, especially as club costs are 'fixed' - effectively, any additional member is almost 100% profit (after allowing for making up and mailing membership packs).

The club would be ecstatic to break last years record so early and grow our membership by over 30% in 4 years.  We fans should share that excitement.  So, I don't see the point of introducing 'Net Profit' to this thread.  imv it simply isn't relevant to the thread nor to the value of increased membership numbers.  Enjoy the ride on and off the field!

Yeah interesting reply - thanks for taking the time.

A lot of these will be the three game memberships that give reseeved seat on QB.

Be interesting to see the conversion numbers over to full membership next year.

Thats the glaring problem when you just focus on pure numbers. The only meaningful number from memberships should be - Net Profit.

What I've always wondered is ... How profitable are Armchair Memberships, 3 game MFC members and MCC Demons allocated members.

This is your final warning. Criticise the moderators / administrators again and you're out of here.

I'll re-post what Andy wrote in the other thread.

99% of the reason another MFC forum was closed down was due to threads like these. I'm not religious so they don't offend me. But I cant see the need for them on an AFL site.

I don't buy this argument. In 1986, being the last year of the "traditional" 12 team competition, the population of Australia was 16 million, meaning there were 1.3 million people per team. In 2018, the population of Australia is 24.7 million, meaning there are 1.3 million people per team. The talent pool should therefore be the same. Sure, there's competition from more sports and other non-sporting opportunities, but the average 17-18 year old who is drafted is far more professionally prepared than 17-18 year olds 30 years ago.

I'm also not sure the standard of the game has dropped. It might be that all games are now shown which means we get to see the good and the bad, whereas back in the "good old days" we saw fewer and perhaps better games (because of the selectivity of which games to show.) It's also possible we just choose to remember selectively and remember the good games and not the bad ones.

I can only speak from my experience but AFL football is not my number 1 sport. For me the globalisation of other sports has impacted on my AFL viewing habits.

If, a Green Bay Packer game was on against any other team but Melbourne I would watch the Packer game. I can now watch Horse Racing 24/7 start in New Zealand, move thru Australia, then Singapore, Hong Kong, Sth Africa, France then UK.

And even more I will actually go to Singapore & Hong Kong to watch the races live -

5-10 years ago I never got the global coverage of other sports so defaulted to footy.

AFL football is under threat from other sports globally.

Mate.... Bears were dominant team with three straight premiership wins and in a GF for a fourth.

If they couldn't build lasting support on the back of that success let's face it they are dead.

The Suns were DOA before they started I am afraid.

One team maybe but two is madness.

Mate...if you haven’t worked it out by now -  I barrack for the Demons but I’m happy to support any team in a National 18 team competition.

So IMHO the Queensland teams need support and you would not get any complaints from me if the AFL gave them concessions.

AFL needs help and an 18 team competition is ludicrous, talent is spread too thin hence the rubbish we watch every weekend. Greed took control at AFL headquarters, now they just try and patch everything up on the run.

As I said each to their own - but I support the rights of all teams to survive in a National 18 team competition.

    So we agree to disagree.

  18. 12 hours ago, SFebey said:

Or even better, merge the two QLD clubs. No way they both survive long term

Becareful what you call for - was not that long ago we would have been in a similar situation with way too many teams in Victoria.

We live in a 18 team competition football in Queensland needs help today - IMHO getting rid of a team is not the answer - but each to their own.

NRL heading for TV ratings win over AFL
At the season's halfway mark, the NRL is eclipsing the AFL as the most-watched football code.
    http://www.theage.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/nrl-on-course-for-tv-ratings-victory-over-afl-20180527-p4zhsd.html?btis

AFL no doubt paying the price for poor Friday night scheduling, but also constant media commentary on poor state of the game.

But does the article itself not suggest Queensland is where NRL is prospering irrespective of teams results, Yet correspondly AFL has the lowest audiences in Queensland.

Looks like a huge opportunity to me - fix Queensland you fix the problem.

I would double the budget for the Queensland Academy, deliver bonus points to them in the draft system by the way of lower draft picks - essentially give them all Queensland academy kids for free.

Then would also consider a Queensland only marketing strategy in conjunction with TV channel.

If that does not work we get out the cheaque book, install AFL people in both teams and role the sleeves up. Go on a recruiting raid around the country.

I think the Dees have aboout 135,000 people liking their Facebook page. Imagine if you could turn all of them into members. Obviously this is not possible and there might be a chunk of those that don't follow the Dees or are Russian bots but at least the Dees have the opportunity to reach that number of people with messages.

I am aware that not every post on social media reaches all of your followers due to changes in the Facebook algorithm and other factors but social media allows the club to reach a larger audience that has already opted in to follow them for a fraction of the cost of advertising on TV or radio to an audience that is made up largely of people who don't care about the Demons.

Social media and advertising on the web allows you to target your audience more directly.

LIKES can pay the bills and winning is the best way to achieve more LIKES.

Yes, I really like what you have said in regards to the demographic nature of Facebook ads, but ultimately you don’t control your own real estate on Facebook.

IMHO the Facebook community is evolving and fine to broadcast information, but less powerful to generate an income or more market specific for the end user to leave Facebook and take the desired action.

Google for me is still the big, big money spinner - and again in my opinion where AFL clubs have somewhat missed the boat to derive large amounts of income. Think Essendon was the only club to go it alone but I don’t think their SEO & SEM people really understood what they were doing - and neither would you expect them too - football is their core business.

True, but we can only play who we are scheduled to play.  It would be great if we could ask for the opportunity to play either of these teams to prove our worth, but obviously we can't.  So we just need to keep winning, keep building the confidence and earning respect.  Do that and anything is possible.

What is fantastic is to hear so many positive comments about the club - baby steps but important steps.

Plus the publicity for our sponsors is almost unprecedented.
