  1. Agree, agree, agree! Rivers especially is a required player. In 3or 4 years he will be a 100+ game player and his cool head and maturity may be guiding us towards the last Saturday in September, (same with Jamar). You know what you've got with these two. Trade 'em and you enter the lottery. Both players have the ability to play in a top side - and it should be ours!
  2. In todays Age Emma Quayle (who knows a bit about young football talent) ranks the Rising Star contenders thus:- 1.Rich 2: Pears 3: Ward 4: Hill 5: Grimes And of Grimes she says :"Grimes would be pushing Rich and Pears had he been able to piece together a full season. His 11 games in a terrible side were excellent enough to rank him this high. Another calm, smart player". 6: Otten 7: Beams 8: Dangerfield 9: Ziebell (injury curtailed his season) 10: Joseph Jurrah was not rated.
  3. Not much has been said about Paul but I must say I've enjoyed his work as a Melbourne player. And while never achieving the recognition attained by fellow 2000 debutantes Brad Green and Cam Bruce, Paul quietly went about his job in a thoroughly professional manner. It was nice to see the following in the Sunday Age - when Jack Grimes was asked Is there someone at your club who is your behind-the-scenes mentor? Jack replied - "Paul Wheatley, He helps us young guys out so much, especially playing down in the back line. He's a really good thinker on the game...and gives me lots of feedback" G'donya Paul! Go to the USA and make a packet!!!
  4. Gee I enjoyed being there today! My votes:- 6: Sylvia 5: Jones 4: Jamar 3: Morton 2: Dunn 1: Jurrah And hurry up 2010!!! :D
  5. Sorry but...a loss on Sunday is a win for the MFC! And yes #30 could become a very good player. Nothing too flash but steady and composed. One of many young Dee's to keep an eye on over the next few years (inc, picks 1,2 and 18 - sooooper )
  6. What about Steve Febey and his missus? They could produce a couple of real champs! Brad Miller and his missus could produce the best looking player yet!!!!!
  7. 6: Davey 5: Bate 4: Valenti 3: Morton 2: Jones 1: Jurrah And a special mention to Dunn, Frawley and Cheney. (I reckon John Northey would have loved young Kyle)!
  8. I'm surprised no one mentions Ricky Petterd! Maybe not top 10 but the way he's been playing and improving in recent weeks makes me think that if traded to or captured by GC he could end up biting us in the bum. I want to keep him, could well turn out to be an excellent player.
  9. Sh#t game but nice to see an impressive debut by #30. Votes:- 6: Jones 5: Bate 4: Petterd 3: Sylvia 2: Martin (if only he could kick) 1: McNamara Otherwise toooo many negatives!
  10. The game was both appalling and funny in equal measure. Even the Richmond supporters around me were shaking their heads in disbelief! Anyway, the better team definitely lost. 6: Petterd 5: McDonald 4: Bate 3: Jones 2: Rivers 1: Bruce (and Dunn was good too).
  11. Wow! Look out for the Spoonerisms
  12. Heard that myself and felt like phoning ch !0 to put her straight (mind you, I wanted to put her straight about a lot of things) and tell her that Brent was a Dee through and through and how he loved our club.
  13. So, women shouldn't comment on football, but it's OK for the blokes to call women's tennis, volleyball, swimming etc. Double standards at play I'm afraid! Judge her on her performance and not her gender! But - on her performance she was krap and she advanced her cause non a micron. Also her bias was appalling. As long as the call is clear, unbiased and the caller knows the players and the subject, and can bring to the commentary something of the moment, I don't care if the commentator has testicles or [censored] (or both) .
  14. However, to be rated you have to be consistent and TJ was anything but! Viney's other quality was - natural leadership, he had loads of it. The few times TJ put it together he was sublime. But unfortunately such times were rare. A pity!
  15. From the TV (and having endured the shocking, s*#thouse Kelly (more bias than a lawn bowl)Underwood. 6: B Moloney 5: J Grimes 4: M Bate 3: C Morton 2: N Jones 1 B Green
  16. I agree! Viney was extremely popular with the playing group at Melbourne and IMHO was our best midfielder in recent decades (then Tingay and Obst). I well remember during one of those Sunday football shows, Sam Kekovich saying that pound for pound Tod Viney was the best player in the AFL. And I remember no one disagreeing with him. The combination of Viney and Jeff White in 1998 was magic. Viney and Stynes were (I think) good mates - Get him back Jimmy, get him back!!!!!
  17. Going great guns isn't he! Excellent game on Sunday. Just shows you what decent coaching and a bit of self belief can do! Well done Matthew (who knows, you may be better than your tall brother ). Our best fullback in many years.
  18. Just got back from the game:- 6: Brucey 5:Petterd 4:Jamar (maybe he's arrived ) 3:Moloney 2:Jurrah 1:Warnock And Green and Jones were pretty good as well!
  19. Jack certainly appears to have leadership qualities and has displayed them more than adequately at junior level. Just read Emma Quayle's book "The Draft" for his team mates assessment of him - quite impressive. And given the dearth of senior leadership around the club at present, the more juniors with leadership ability the better!
  20. I heard Brock was a doggies supporter! Although like you, I heard those stories about him attending Essadon training sessions. However of late, Brock seems to have put his money where his heart is. And I'm proud of him for it. :D
  21. Nice to cast votes for a winning team! 6: Bruce 5: Grimes 4: Jamar 3: Warnock 2: Green 1: Moloney
  22. I remember Col Sylvia's first (lousy) game and his subsequent poor form. And I remember being very upset with him and wanting him out of the team and traded. I'm glad I didn't get my wish. I remember Col Garland's first few games and early poor form and I along with many others on this forum wanted him delisted ASAP. I'm glad I didn't get my wish. However,I've seen too many good games from Cale Morton to realise that he will be an exceptional football player. At 19 he still has much to learn but will learn more and be of more use playing senior football than playing in the VFL. I do not like knocking MFC players on this forum but there are others I'd drop before Morton, and they've had many more years at the club than Morton. Cale Morton may or may not be a future "elite" football player (although I think he will be) but with a little luck the kid'll be with us for at least the next decade!
  23. To quote Cannonball Adderley - "Hipness isn't a state of mind, it's a fact of life"! How about Miles, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Art Ensemble of Chicago and all the other music groups formed from within the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. (if you're not hip enough to know 'em - look 'em up and learn something)
  24. Well I didn't see the whole game. I left 5 minutes early so I could both get out of the car park before the rush and (B) avoid the mad scum supporters who attacked Nathan Jones' dad last time. However I was very impressed by our no. 12 and a couple of others - so: 6 Sylvia 5 Moloney 4 Grimes (the Real future of the MFC) then I suppose 3 Jamar 2 Davey 1 Warnock
  25. Certainly a good article, and yes Emma Quayle's a very good football writer. Did you notice that the player peer assessment program took place in November 2007? Yet (as documented in the article) in March 2008 and in March this year Col was still getting into trouble for his wayward behavior! He is very much a work in progress. Does he have the intelligence and backbone to come through as a good or (we hope) very good player? I dearly hope so, but I'm still very wary. However I'm a bit scared that he may end up as just another Melbourne couldabeen/shouldabeen (and we've had tooo many of them in my lifetime)!!!
