  1. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of spine with the supporters...

Reckon they are all crowing over at the Geelong supporters website. What say we just support the team and scream our heads off. Sure on paper it looks hopeless, but how many times have we seen the understrength team get up? It's not the final straw for me if they don't play Sylvia, or they do play Yze or Danners has a brain fade, what is getting close to a final straw for me is the continious stream of negativity.

    Go Dees!

    Ok...We are in deep S#*T!!

  2. Crikey. You must have missed alot of football and you could not be more wrong.

The thing that all premiership teams have is the commitment to a game plan.

But a champion team is defined by the acts of their top six and the commitment of all to a team plan. The top six are the players who have the ability or skill in the tough challenging games that lift a side in a close contest by their own actions. Invariably that top six will contain players who are "stars" of the game.

...and maybe a game plan B ...but all in all, there lay the clubs terminal deficiencies. RIP.

  3. Yeah, this is quickly turning into another "difference of opinion" tennis match here, which is a shame. I think we were getting somewhere.

Dapper, I see where youre coming from and I think we have pretty similiar views...youre just a tad more positive than I!!

I agree theres no doubt we been penalised by our own conservative, middle of the road success over the past few years.

When looking at say Key pos recruitment, my point here is that historically, over the past 10+ years, injuries to our KPP's mixed with a ridiculously poor track record of KPP recruitment has ultimately mauled us and looks set to bite us again.

My other issue is the constant lack of consistency of the playing group, as has been the case for a number of years. Inconsistency has to be expected in a rebuilding phase, but should not be granted to a club who has had almost 10 years to get things right.

BTW, Hannabal is well..[censored] off right atm, but good as gold!

  4. No doubt it will come out of the leadership group.

But Jaded's case in point re Miller is not lost on me even thou more than likely it was expressed through sheer frustration.

Out there on Monday he showed some ticker whereas a lot of others didn't.

    It will be interesting.

  5. Who is going to stand-in and stand-up for the side as Captain this week.

Given we have injuries to Neita and Brock is out, the only players left in the leadership group are Green, Bruce and Junior.

On form over the past week or so.. Macca for mine... but given all the talk on this subject lately, theres bound to be opinion.

  6. Gone wrong?

All tip of the iceburg stuff

Direction for one. Lack of vision is two.

Player development is snail paced and list management has been AWOL

Succession planning? Nothing new..just not heard of at the junction oval...?

4 players are already the wrong side of 30, of which 2 ( 34 & 9) have totally plateaued out and are on the decline...tell me..where will the potential champions come from in the short tm. Jamar perhaps? Newton perhaps? PJ perhaps? Maybe 426 if we'd held onto him for a couple more years? Oh yeah..and we almost forgot the perpetual vacuum issue at CHF and the issue of no boot polish at FB.

Maybe Frawley can offer something there and perhaps Dunn @ CHF. Thats long term...along with Newton still too raw. Is there anyone else?

Our long term inability to have any kind of plan B in any facet of our club is what is hurting us

The best we can do is pray for no more outside receivers! Weve got those by the bucketloads.

  7. Dappa, this isn't a post game witch hunt or finger pointing exercise

My point is, its alright for blokes to talk about youth, but it means something when there is a proven track record of youth/player development on show.

Player recruitment is an investment. Player 'development' is a process and it doesn't all of a sudden stop when the player hits 21.

Getting away from your rhetoric Dappa, there are much deeper issues here....hopefully any monkey can see that.

So, will we see Godders, Brown & Ward front up again?

If the last 2 games were an abberation, sure ,i'll take your word for it...

  8. Nature versus nurture...

I reckon the way ND, CAC and probably Mark Williams nurture our young players is one of MFC's strengths. They give them at least one season where they're not expected to make the seniors. After that they're SLOWLY brought into the team with only as much pressure as they deserve given their performances.

    You reckon?

Are you saying that for the past 9 years Daniher & Co's ability to 'nurse' our young & upcoming brigade has been a strength?

Dappa, If you are silly enough to think this and yet not been satisfied with yesterdays performance, your comments are as confusing as the Mfc itself.

  9. Why on earth would Holland be omitted? So CJ or Ward can play on Kosi? Ridiculous.

Dutchy takes him, or the resting ruckman, and Carroll takes Gehrig.

They've got two talls, and a possible resting ruckman in Blake (they have selected 3 ruckmen).

The other forwards are crumbers or resting onballers.

The teams are in, the excitements building, bring on the game!!

    Agreed re Holland

Calling-up Maguire so soon is a risk the saints seem prepared to take and opportunity knocks for Miller.

  10. Not really. Player payments come from the salary cap which is handed out by the AFL.

FCS Jaded you have done it again..only this time you have really exposed yourself and enlightened the brethren as to how little you really know. Think before you pull the trigger, or at the very least, consult someone who has a clue! <_<

Back to the topic, there is nothing stopping anybody from suporting our great club and I encourage as many people to do so.

I hope that as many 'supporters' of our club contribute financially as is possible (and within their means).

Whether it be through merchandise purchased through our club, attending our home games (gate receipts) or attending club functions. People who are not members should not be ridiculed. They should be encouraged to get on board and help make a difference. YM, I suspect you don't have a great lot in life to hang your hat on?

  11. what is the ron evans medal?

The Rising Star Award, formerly known as the NAB Rising Star Award, is now called the Ron Evans Medal, in recognition of Ron Evans, (who sadly passed away recently DD) and his contribution to Australian Rules Football.

  12. Appreciate the optimism, but I would say it would be folly to expect the kid to have a huge impact this year. Obviously he has had huge injury problems and another heavily interrupted pre-season. We have to accept his development is well behind the often-compared McLean, and we can only hope that he can cure his injury worries, put in some solid pre-seasons and learn his trade as a top-level on-baller.

Sylvia's apprentiship is done & dusted and even with a limited pre-season was able to exert an influence on Sandringham's result today.

I don't have heightened expectations of Sylvia's output for the first half of this year. That said, he has demonstrated , particulary last season, that he is capable of playing at the highest level and having considerable impact. When, and if when, he is fit and on song, I have no doubt that he has a great opportunity this year to announce his arrival and stamp his mark as a rising and potentially elite AFL player.

  13. He was one of 4 Vice Captains, as not one of the 4 leaders under Neitz were given official titles of "Vice" or "Deputy Vice", but that's all irrelevant details really.

Glad you have time to search through the archives for things I said two year ago.

To label a player a Vice captain when he is not is hardly irrelevant in any context of a discussion.

Irrespective of my opinions and Fans perspectives on Bruce, whats relevant here is that nothing he has stated is fabricated or contrived.

  14. I still stand by my comment that Miller... because they appointed Miller a Vice Captain.

Miller was not a VC..he was part of the leadership group. By no means does this position place a mortgage on the captaincy. Just ask Yze, Dog,Biz & Nicho.

  15. Jaded,

Whilst people here have opinions (of which they are entitled to), I am a little bemused by the 'evergreen' swings in your opinions. For instance, the topic of future captaincy of our club. Now, this is not a criticism, merely an observation.

Take for example this comment you made in late '05 re Brad Miller...

"I'm not worried about his goal-kicking, when in range he usually goes alright. It is not his fault that he hardly ever takes a mark inside 50.

He does need to become less one-dimensional with his handballing, I'd love to see him take a mark and going for a run, or kicking it long to the goal-square.

As far as Milsy is concerned, I can think of only two things:

    Future captain

    CHF not CHB/FB [end quote]

If the club were to have taken your advice back then and not 'delay the inevitable' by appointing Miller, would you still have stood by your comments to this day?

Perhaps I am reading it all wrong; perhaps you refer to 'future' as in after Brock?

  16. Nice thesis Dappa...you must be unemployed?

Cam Bruce is highly respected amongst the playing group and in my view is a role model for all footballers, both aspiring and current AFL players.

Injury aside and despite his critics, his form and output for the club has been of a consistently high standard. In addition,he is one of the few remaining players who has come through the old system and will be close to clocking 10 years service with the Mfc. I believe we will see even greater feats from him in coming seasons and I would have him Captain the club before McLean.

Whilst Brock has had a significant impact on the club on a couple of levels, I woud hesitate to expect him to shoulder such a responsibility (and prestigious) role just yet. This is not to say that he does not have the support of the playing group.

The point about age is an interesting one and is well made. Mind you, out of the 4 names mentioned, I would only pick one of them who has really proved themselves to be a leader amongst men.

  17. This is the descion making year for Millar! If he plays well presents himself and breaks packs then he should be CHF this year while if he becomes lazy and gets frustrated and remains the nothing player who could have made it but didnt!

Too much fluff CTD..to put it simply, he needs to hurt the opposition by kicking goals. For me, that will be his measure of success this year.
