I predict that if we should secure his services, Kolodjashnij will become the most commonly mis-spelt name on Demonland. And that will be an achievement following on from the sometimes absurdly simple (for example, Mitch Clark/Clarke) to the understandable...where are the capitalised letters in vandenBerg's name?

    Or Hibbard instead of Hibberd

  2. I do not think we are being “shafted” in giving Hogan and in return receiving May, KK and Pick 23, however I still feel as though the deal is certainly unders.

KK should not be part of the deal – Mahoney said earlier last week that we would have been able to facilitate a trade regardless of whether we trade Hogan or not, so IMO, he should be a separate deal entirely.

Essentially, Freo are giving us Pick 5 and 23, which although “acceptable”, is not a fair compensation. It really should be Pick 5 and 11 or Pick 5 and next year’s first rounder. But given our desire for May and Hogan’s desire to go home, it seems we have lost the bargaining power in this trade and we just have to make the most out of what we will get.

It is disappointing, but in all honesty, we cannot assess the fairness of a trade for another couple of years.

Right now, if the deal turns out to be what is currently assumed, I won’t be in an uproar, but I definitely won’t be happy. Losing a player of Hogan’s calibre is never an easy pill to swallow, but unfortunately, we just have to accept it for what it is and trust in the department for now.

I will say though, I have a new most hated team and that team is Freo.

If so, it's self inflicted. Be good to yourself. Treat yourself to a break and come back in 10 days and find out what happened, or not. The outcome will be the same regardless of what happens on here, in the papers, on trade radio, etc.

Whether you buy in to the nuttiness or not is completely up to you.

You're right, it is. But anything that is a great distraction or form of procrastination from work or study is addictive and unfortunately, this is where I have found myself haha

but you have balanced my thoughts...i will continue to read, without buying!

  4. This is just becoming a bit of a joke now. I might sound melodramatic, but the toing and froing, the he’s staying and he’s leaving, is truly exhausting.

I will be over the moon if he stays, but if he does, he needs to sign a long-term contract and put this to bed. It is frustrating for supporters, it is destabilising for the MFC, and most of all, it is a distraction for Jesse. If don’t think I can bear starting another Jesse Hogan Panic Room or Trade to Freo thread this time next year.

This whole ordeal is just so peculiar and there just seems to be something off about it. There has never been real clarity provided to the supporters by any of the parties involved regarding the nature and reasoning behind the trade.

I just want to know what is happening because it is exhausting – one minute I am prepared for him to leave, the next I am excited that he will stay only to find out he is leaving again. It is farcical.

It was mentioned that GWS get pick 5 and hand over Lobb and 14. Has anyone done the points calculation on this trade. I ask because is what is 6 and 14 worth to us especially if pick 14 isn't enough for May? Would GC want pick 6 for May ?

What would Freemantle's first round pick next year be worth?  Would that be more attractive to GC than pick 14. So pick 6 this year and next years first round for Hogan.

GC will want a top 5 pick for sure. I do not necessarily think May is worth a top 5 pick but since Gold Coast will likely finish bottom three-five next year, they will just retain him for another year and then wait for compensation, which should guarantee them a top five pick anyway. For GC to accept the trade, I don't think pick 14 will do the job unfortunately, but also fair enough - I would hope Melbourne do the same if we were in their position.

This is why I think Melbourne are so adamant about pick 5 and 6; we obviously want to take one to the draft and use the other to secure May. If it were pick 5 and say pick 12, we would have to use pick 5 on May and pick 12 in the draft, which will still get us a pretty nifty player, but perhaps not who we are after (…hopefully Rankine ?)

How have we landed ourselves in such tight financial cap situation with such a young list? If we can't afford May without losing Hogan, are we in some strife going forward? Definitely sounds tighter than it should be.

I don’t think financially we can’t afford May without losing Hogan, it’s more that we have no trade currency, which we don’t.

  7. Well, I’ll be happy to be proven wrong, but looks like Hogan is out the door. Shame because he’s such a talent and it would have been nice to keep the group that saw the beginning of our rise together.

But, it is what it is, and now it’s time to look at how we can maximise this to our advantage.

Personally, I see Freo giving us their picks 4 and 5 as the most appropriate compensation, but they may give us 5 and 10.

If we are to receive picks 4 and 5, trade pick 5 to GC for May + KK and then use pick 4 in the draft to secure Izak Rankine. I saw someone post earlier that Port are right into him, but if the Hogan deal is done, we should be too. The kid looks a gun - speedy, agile, and a regular feature in the highlight reel.

check out these highlights from his 2017 and 2018 seasons. I saw on his Instagram he likes to sing as well - he can do duets with Robbo.

  8. I understand the whole club talk of “he’s a contracted player”, he is a “Melbourne man” etc., but there was something more convincing in Gawn’s statement. To say he expects to see Hoges in red and blue next year is quite strong because if it is true he is homesick, to put expectations on a teammate and friend that is struggling just isn’t in Gawn’s character. I might be overanalysing but I felt like Gawn’s statement was genuine.

Oh well, it is just a waiting game I guess

  9. Really gutted to hear that, but fully respect and understand Jesse's predicament and desire to go home.

We will no doubt get a great return, but from a long-term perspective, I cannot see us coming out of this trade winning (unless we win a premiership in the next five/ten years obviously). He is going to be an absolute star. However, I guess you could argue that for him to become that star, he needs to be where his heart is and that is obviously in Perth.

Wish him all the best and would hope that no one would  boo him - he has been a great player for our club and it is important to remember, life is just bigger than footy.

Still clinging onto some glimmer of hope that he may decide to stay, but if not, good luck at Freo.

Wtf?! So neither Hogan or Dees have discussed a trade, this is being driven by Freo?!

Shaking the tree to see if the apple falls. Still doesn’t feel right to me.

From what I gathered, it is a case of Freo contacting Hogan management and Melbourne being made aware of this. Melbourne would prefer to keep Hogan but if he declares that he would like to go home - which no one has officially reported he has, only that he is “open to it” - then Melbourne would begin discussions. But ultimately, Melbourne see hoges as a part of our future and would like to keep him.

The fact that there has been no adamant declaration he wants to leave, only “open” to a trade, suggests to me that it is perhaps his management team at work as they probably begin discussions for a contract extension with Melbourne.

truthfully, no one knows anything but my gut feeling is that it is all just noise and that hoges will stay a dee.

  11. It was said On the Couch tonight that basically there has been some sort of shift in the Hogan trade talk within the last few days - it seems that they are not as definitive about him staying now. However, the trade is not being driven by the club at all, they want him to stay; it is either being driven by Freo or Hogan.

The case, IMO, is that Freo are driving it and have proposed something quite tempting to Hogan’s management. Perhaps Hogan’s management are using the talk to up Melbourne’s offer that they will no doubt begin discussing with him as part of probably a long term contract extension. This last paragraph is just my opinion though, no sources.

I think he will resign on long term extension, but if not, we should play hard ball and accept nothing less than two first round draft picks.

I think an important thing to know that many people don't, is that Hogan and Fyfe are super close mates.

Not that instagram=friendship, but they don't even follow each other on instagram...

and it is just as important to note that hogan and brayshaw, hogan and oliver, hogan and etc., are super close mates. I am not sure if a friendship with Nat Fyfe will ultimately determine whether or not Jesse will be heading to Freo or not.

  13. Well, as most have said, a disappointing way to end an otherwise fantastic season. The most disheartening aspect of it all is that it just simply wasn’t Melbourne and as much as West Coast destroyed us, they also had luck to help them.

That goal off the back of the LeCras’ foot after a dashing run of desperation from Hibberd was simply cruel for our boys. On top of that, Darling’s goal from a miracle bounce compared with Hannan’s missed opportunity when Optus Stadium decided to turn into a bloody trampoline and bounce the ball as high as possible to give West Coast a better opportunity to chase him - seriously wtf? I know the game was done and dusted by all those points, but it really just was not our day in all facets of the game.

I do want to say though that it would take a pretty spectacular team to knock off a West Coast outfit like yesterday at Optus Stadium in a Preliminary Final. I landed back in Melbourne about three hours ago from Perth and you really don’t understand the home ground advantage they have until you go there and experience it yourself. I am not complaining, they earned their right to a home game - but the moment I got there, I knew we would have to play our most formidable football to win. Had the game been at the MCG, I am not saying we would have won, but we certainly would not have let it blow out the way it did. To make up 4% of a crowd, it is really hard to get the boys going when nothing seems to be going their way. We actually were playing somewhat decent footy in the first 10 minutes (in the sense that we were getting into our 50 and actually possessing the ball, though overly so) and had we had the electric crowd of the previous two games, I truly believe we would have been able to answer their pressure a little better and get ourselves into the game a bit more. The West Coast cheers even gave me chills and the pre-game stuff was inspiring - I mean they had a friggin, real, breathing eagle that flew around the ground and eat some bloody seed once it had looped the whole oval. But enough of the bird and the stadium, there is no point in dwelling in the land of could-have-been as that will take us nowhere… let us look to the land of what-will-be.

All in all, the season has been a resounding success - if you told me we were going to make the preliminary final at the start of the year with the injuries we have had, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. Certainly yesterday was a missed opportunity, but also a valuable lesson that I believe we will come to thank later. I would have loved a premiership, but in my honest opinion, one this year would have been premature. The next five to ten years we have an opportunity to make multiple assaults on the flag and I am confident we will come out victorious on more than one occasion.

It was a bittersweet ending, but that bitterness can simmer in our guts along with the players’ helping to stir them on to a bigger and better season next year. Top 4 and we are shot to be the 2019 premiers.

  14. Perhaps somewhat over the top, but I said preseason to my family that he would make All Australian if he were to be given a decent and consistent run of games. We should never have dropped him, but glad to see him in the team come finals.

    love him

Only thing I'll say is he is out coached easily. And this isn't a go at you btw.

We should have beaten STK by 10 goals, he was out coached and they could smell it.

We should have beaten SYD by 5 goals according to many on here, he didn't change the plan mid game.

PORT we had +30 i50's but he continued to send the same message out.

GEEL both games got runs ons and he didn't stop it, OMAC on Hawkins (that's not players fault)

I see what you're saying, but those games have had very stubborn or slow impact from Goodwin.

To be fair to Goody here, he probably didn’t change things up because we simply weren’t doing much wrong – it was just our execution letting us down…although I do agree on the OMac part, Frost should have gone to Hawkins earlier.

Besides the Collingwood and Hawthorn game, we have literally been in every match… we are just missing the final touch that one can only gain from experience and maturity.

Also read somewhere that Goodwin has one of the best coaching records since John Northey thus far in his career. Pretty good start. He gets some hard criticism purely because of the club he is coaching - we have been so deprived of success that all we want is for it to happen immediately. Not making excuses, I do think finals is the pass mark but I am still pretty happy with where Goody has taken us so far and where I think he will take us in the future.

Also, I am not implying you are being critical of Goodwin, just speaking more generally as some on here are!

  16. Have met him a couple of times as I work with Challenge - the  not-for-profit organisation, which supported him through his first battle with leukaemia and which he has been ambassador for over the last 15 years or so.

Last time we spoke we chatted about the Dees and how it seems like we are finally heading on the right track. Hope he is around long enough to see some (hopefully) finals success this year.

He gave so much to the Challenge organisation and is truly one of the most selfless and giving humans one can meet. It would be a nice gesture by the MFC to do something for him and to wear a yellow armband in support of not only Jarrod, but the Challenge organisation, which he loved and gave so much for.

Great guy and sending all the love in the world to both him and his family.

[censored] that's a stupid comment. had Brayshaw been played the mark and Wingard not we would of won.

we have very few plodders and are still adapting to life after lever

In addition to what you just said, Rance Dusty Cotchin etc. are all in their prime - our stars haven’t even hit their peaks yet.

Oliver 20, Brayshaw 21, Hogan 22, Viney 23, Petracca 21, and the list goes on and on.... our list is so young and we are only going to get better - how promising is that!

Give it 3-4 years and let’s then see how those “plodders” are travelling.

  18. I understand losing sucks, and I think it is more frustrating particularly when you believe your side deserved to win, but Friday’s effort was enormous.

I think overall, we were the better side of the match, unfortunately we just weren’t when it mattered most.

My brother and dad went to the game and they said the game was incredible and if we had won, that would have been enormously HUGE by us. I think when you’re at home watching from the TV, you don’t really realise the home ground advantage the Adelaide teams have. Every time Port kicked a goal the lights black out and the stadium alights with a thunderbolt – it’s incredible apparently.

Both said basically when Port hit the lead, they knew it would be hard to get over them purely because of how electric and exciting the crowd became. They also said the Adelaide teams have no right to complain about the GF in Vic when they have such an advantage with their Adelaide Oval fortress.

We were gallant and for the most part, better, but unfortunately, we didn’t cross the line because of poor efficiency inside 50 as well as a couple of dodgy free kicks in that last quarter.

Expect us to bounce back STRONGLY against Saints, and really hope we can make the run home to finals. I think we deserve to be there, it is simply about capitalising and taking every chance we get. Need a few guys to lift though to return to the form we had a couple of weeks – namely Hogan.
