I thought Jack did some nice things at times but looked underdone! Not playing him when he should have played can do that.

Lets hope he recaptures some form for the Aints game. We definately need him for this game!

I think Goodwin's summation was pretty spot on. Had a good first half, did some nice things. Was good defensively. Got burnt a few times by his team mates running into open space. Looked a little rusty I thought though.

Not enough evidence to suggest he's going to build upon 2016 or regress.

Watts' decision making from a mark is insipid.

He either drifts off the mark forcing the umpire to call play-on (therefore is suddenly under pressure) or he doesn't get back behind the mark quick enough and is under pressure from the man on the mark.

Calm down. He was trying to move it on quickly, but Hogan was out of position so he had to pull back. Regardless, he drew two defenders and almost set up a goal.

Surely you aren't denying that Watts was 'singled out'?  There were other good performing players from last year, apparently not injured but not given a game but no comment was made about them by the club.  And if you counter that if Goodwin is asked about a particular player he has to comment on him, you are not using your imagination.  I think (ie. don't know) that it is quite possible the club has mishandled this in an attempt to improve Watts or impose standards. Let's hope my fear is misplaced.

BTW, please keep your politics out of it.

That's because the media didn't ask about Jetta or Frost or Garland etc. The media loves a Jack Watts story so it was actually them who singled Watts out. The club just responded. Garland may also be down in his standards but no one cared to ask.

It highlights the folly of using past results to try and predict the future. It does prove that we've been pretty avaerage over the past 2 years, so no surprises there.

But, there is not much that is inherently wrong in the assessments. It is uses the AFL player ratings, which is highly skewed toward scoring involvements. It's based upon statistics analysis of matches as to which acts are the most crucial in determining the outcome of a match. It's also why players like Trac and Hunt rate as above average after 1 season - I'd expect them to be edging elite by the end of this year.

Those bemused by Hogan need to remember who he is being rated against. 40 goals from the no1 kpf is the very definition of average.

And as for TMac: being the primary intercept player leads to him being the beginning of many scoring chains. And think about that role across the league - who's better: Rance obviously, but then who? Jeremy McGovern? well he's elite too. The only other might be Steven May.

I agree. I think it's pretty accurate. I love Viney and Lewis, but there are a lot more midfielders ahead of them which puts them in the average category... e.g. Parker, Dangerfield, Cripps, Hannebery, Shiel, Kennedy the list goes on.

By the way, get back to my question, which you nicely dodged with your all-encompassing mediocre stats.

Other than 2016, name a good year by Watts.

2011 was pretty decent for a 20 yo. long term prospect and I actually think he was tracking OK under Bailey. Compared to the clubs current development program though it would have been on par with Auskick.

I find your rating of Watts' years as almost in a vacuum with no consideration of what was going on at the club. Long term prospect players offer you nothing for the first few years and then eventually hit their straps. Watts was probably fair game to be judged in 2012 but a bloke named Mark Neeld walked into the club and almost destroyed it. The disunity between Watts and Neeld is well known on here which stumped his growth as a player. So if we exclude the Neeld years, you're only really left with 2 disappointing years (2014, 2015) under Roos. Some would even argue those two were more development years for all that he didn't receive when he started at the club.

After the game on Saturday, it looked quite clear to me that the highest pressure players (aside form of course Viney) - the in your face, relentless, annoying, hard-tackling never give up players - were VDB, ANB, Harmes, Bugg and even JKH to a degree. Most posters (including me) quickly see all or most of them as being out of the final 22 once we bring in Tyson, Watts, Garlettt and Kent and shave the current line-up back to 22. To me there's a massive (turnover-causing) pressure downgrade in the process and, of course, a corresponding upgrade in skill / finesse  and a bit of speed. Just mulling over what the best option is against St Kilda.

I still think VDB will end up causing more turn overs off his own boot than any pressure acts.

I don't write on here much, as I genuinely enjoy reading some of the opinions on here, most often to laugh or possibly cry at the stuff some people write.

But, need to tell you all, from a reliable source inside the club, watts IS being punished for his training standard and how he returned not as fit as he could have been, not his off field stuff like some people are guessing. The main reason though is how he has been training.

for those who go to training sessions, you know they film all the sessions and drills and also monitor all players with their gps systems, and unfortunately for jack, he wasn't doing what they expect of all players, all the time.

once he shows consistent effort for the entire session, he will be back in.

Even if not picked for the WCE game, have been told it is highly unlikely he won't play round 1 for us!

Thanks for that. Watched Goodwin's interview today in AFL tonight and he mentioned that his lack of intensity was also self admitted by Jack. In years gone by they probably would have let it slide, but with so many training the house down, and a hard line approach, it wasn't acceptable this time.

  8. Perhaps all the media attention is also brought on by the fact as to how much the general public is interested in Jack Watts. 3 to 4 active Demonland threads about Jack Watts clearly shows people are somehow fascinated by the enigma that is Jack Watts. Surely if no one was clicking the links to all the herald sun/the age articles then the articles would dry up.  I think the media keeps on writing articles and discussing Jack Watts in length, because somewhere out there, people are generally interested in what's happening in the life of Jack Watts.

This article is a good case in point. It's been written purely because Jack left the track early today due to him feeling unwell (a cold perhaps?). Surely no other player would receive an article from such an insignificance event during a pre-season - seems to be more what you'd read leading up to GF week.

    A few notes:

Weids edges out JKH and VDB for mine.

Jetta may be underdone for now, Garlett assumed injured

Harmes poor skill execution will be too costly at Etihad. ANB squeezed out.

    Assumes Watts has redeemed himself.

No, I think it's both.  All things being equal we'd be in a better position if Watts had had the appropriate game time prior to R1.  He hasn't.  That hurts the team so it does penalize the team and the player.

But why on earth did it get to this stage?  Madness.

Watts only really has himself to blame if he's failed to do the work on the track. He probably also needs to do the back-up ruckman role again this year. Playing 2 rucks will hurt the midfield rotations too much and I can't see room for Pederson this year if we're going to develop Weids.

You must have watched a different game to me.  I thought Port were absolutely putrid in the first half and their game supports my theory that last year wasn't and aberration, we'll see them continue to slide under Hinkley.  They improved on their woeful skill execution after half time, but I think the problems with their decision making is due to the game plan.  Their bottom six are pretty ordinary and while guys like Westhoff, Hartlett and Dixon are serviceable  they would want to have more impact for what they are getting paid.

I liked Jack Steele's game for the Saints, but I didn't see anything we haven't seen before - McCartin looks to be developing (but Petracca will be better), but their older players are looking very old now.   I would be surprised if they played all of Riewoldt, Gilbert, Montgana, Armitage and Dempster round one.  Carlisle and Brown help structurally down back, but naturally I like our list better than theirs and I think if you are going to shake some monkeys off your back then round one is the best time to do it.

A round one win will be huge and probably the biggest indication of all that we are going to have a very big year. Beating the Cats at Etihad would also be nice revenge for the 100pt belting.

    Goodwin's presser was very interesting...

I honestly believe that he is putting the "ball" fairly and squarely in Jack's court!

"You are good enough to be one of the elite players of this competition Jack, but unless you bring your highest level of intensity every time you pull on your boots, I will not sit here and allow you to waste your talent.  You have the opportunity to be an integral part of something special here and show everyone that ever doubted you they were wrong but, mark my words young man, if you don't bring 100% every time you pull on an item of red 'n blue clothing, I will have no hesitation in allowing you to watch US do it while you wear different colours.  It's in your hands Jack!"

We are about to have a real crack at a premiership over the coming years people! If you don't clip your ticket then you miss out!

We are Melbourne.... and we are back!

Yes. What I got out of it was that this key criteria is 100℅ intensity all the time, and if you don't show that, you're not getting picked. I did like the fact that he said "when Jack does return, we are going to have a very good player on our hands".

If Goodwin's plan does work and he can produce a super charged Jack Watts, who's even more damaging then 2016, then he is a genius.

  14. Although I want to feel optimistic about our performances, I can't ignore the fact we won all 3 preseason games last year and it meant sweet FA in the season proper (lost to saints twice, dogs and port in Darwin).

These performances feel different, but Saints round 1 still worries me with (especially with how well they play against port in the first half)
