  1. Looking at trade targets, I'd be targeting a 3rd round pick for Leroy Jetta, Daniel Cross or Harry Cunningham.

None will set the world on fire, but have mature bodies, experience and can fill a role until young players have developed to fill it.

I know Jetta & Cunningham seem lacklustre, but I don't think too many were impressed by the idea of Monfries at Port either, and that's been a win for them.

Good choices. I think cross would be a very capable player. Like you say, he isn't a world beater any more, but he will put in for the club. Leroy jetta is a very unusual player, each year he comes in and looks like he has taken the next step, but after 4 or 5 games he falls back to that lackadaisical approach that has ultimately seen him passed by Dempsey, winderlich, zaharakis etc.

I've been thinking these past few weeks that bernie vince just might be a bloke looking for a change, even though his farming family is located north of Adelaide and he is fairly close to them.

  2. ...but it hasn't

I would not be happy with that at all, we pick up a PP at 20. No it needs to be at the top end of the draft, if it was pick one then we can decide to keep it for Boyd and trade one of our other forwards or trade the Boyd pick on. If it's pick 2 then we get 2 great kids to add to the list.

3 of these can't get a game and the other is a tagger, why are they top midfielders. Because they are available doesn't make them top midfielders.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't make it clear that they are all that is potentially available? Really?

  3. No but two picks in the top 20 can allow a team to draft in Clark and Dawes. That can change fortunes quickly.

There may be midfielders of a similar ilk that we can get.

Bernie vince, Daniel cross, Levi greenwood or Jesse stringer are about the top midfielders attainable by trading I think. Throw in Adams, dale Thomas and that's about the most available talent there is.

    Or dayle garlett.

  4. It never hurts to dream Gd

Just make sure you don't wake in fright

When I hear the following from a commentator, I'll know to pinch myself-

"Beautiful kick by Nicholson into centre half forward"

"Tapscott picking up a lot of footy across half forward and really getting involved in field play"

"Strauss really physical in that last contest with kurt tippet"

"Jordie Mckenzie really spreading well today, becoming that link up player through the centre of the ground and really penetrating with his disposal inside 50"

I jest old dee, but wouldn't it be great!

  5. Option A - ND1: Priority Pick before the draft.

Option B - ND11 and ND20: Mid-1st round and end of round picks.

Option C - ND11 and ND20 Trade Tied: Mid-1st round and end of round picks, one or both must be traded out. AFL can ratify use of picks should suitable trade not appear.

Option D - ND11 and 2-player State League Exception: Mid- 1st round pick and pre-draft selection of 2 players in any State league.

If I was Jackson I would fight for each option until rebuffed and not accept anything below Option D.

If I was the AFL I would leak Option A as a possibility and then give Option B.

I like it rpfc, but again I really find it difficult to see a player from an opposition club who we could trade in. Bernie vince may be one, Jesse stringer, Taylor Adams or maybe Craig bird but I doubt he would leave. None of these players are going to win games for us off their own boot, however they will add to our current midfield.

I'm of the opinion that we need one and it was top 10, but I also rather that we were in a position where we didn't need it and tapscott, nicho, bail, Strauss, blease and trengove all develop strongly over the last part of the season.

  6. Old dee, please. Enough with the breaks.

I want this club to improve.

    Give ME a break.

Oh yeah- you're one of those guys who bag the club for playing youngsters, blame them for trying to bring in mature players to fill the gaps, now blame them for trying to develop players?

    Give US a break!

  7. Cheers db, but if you missed last week Kelly was the absolute dominant player by far for metro. He probably kept them in arms reach of SA as billings, McDonald were all quiet.

Expect Matt crouch to really firm into top 8 calculations. He is one of those team orientated players who really hits the ball hard. Good skills too.

  8. Nothing I saw today convinced me not to take Sheed,30 disposals and 4 goals last week.He has a ready made body and an elite kick on both sides and runs all day.

Today,Dunstan,Aish and Kelly didn't do much but I like the look of Battersby,he looks ready to go and has elite disposal with 84% eff. for the champs.

So it's Sheed for me but this time last year I said we have to get this Ollie Wines kid,so what do I know?

Shows that you make decisions based on how they play in one game and don't take other things into account- growth, development etc.

  9. Final score SA 11.9.75 to WA 10.5.65.

Would like to know what others at the game thought but I thought that Aish was only running one way in the last quarter. Wasnt impressed with most of his efforts in the last at all. Dunstan was solid in the last after copping a whack in the guts. Really liked Todd McKay and Campbell Combe in the guts, Scharenberg is top 10 not top 3 IMO. For WA I liked Marsh, Lim and Johnson while Cripps (think it was him, no 17) did well from what I saw.

I was more watching the SA players as Dom Sheed was out.

    Now to country v metro

It's hard to judge on one game dd, but aish is coming back from a shoulder injury and has missed a bit of footy. He is a class player. He might be this years version of rich/selwood/heppell who is rated very highly early on, but slips because of injury leading into the draft. I think he is on talent/skill he potentially is the most talented in this draft. Did you happen to see much of Reynolds for sa? I missed the early game.

Jack billings really turning it on for metro!

  10. Yep, but there is no reason for us to trade a high pick for these type of players and I know they are only an example you are giving. Gibbs I would think about, it just depends on what recruiters see the upside of Sheed, Dunstan, Aish or Kelly. It also depends on us getting a PP then what GWS want to do with Boyd and also of course where we finish.

Hence the word circumstantial being in both of my replies to you...

  11. They were just examples p-man. I think yarran will be offered around at the end of this season. You could make a case for any club though, freo- Chris mayne or viv michie, Adelaide- bernie vince, Brisbane- Jared polec, saints- montagna.

Purely speculating as I said it all depends on what gws want and what happens at number 1. But if we had the chance to downgrade from pick 2 to receive pick 6-14 plus a decent player, what would we be after? That was the hypothetical.

  12. The dogs have ruled out Griffen...Freo will be interesting but my bet is on Carlton, will they pay the price?

Read your post, just think they will use Boyd to trade into the senior players they need. Yarran or Lucas wouldn't fit the bill, maybe Gibbs and Yarran and a pick back, would Carlton be prepared to trade Murphy for a key forward? They won't get him for some package of fringe players.

I'm not sure Freo have the currency to spend, Fyfe but would they give him up?

Melbourne rjay. I meant trade our pick to them for yarran/Lucas and their first rounder.

As I said, outside the box, and very circumstantial. But if we add a player we need as well as a top 10 pick also, it could suit us better than taking aish/sheed and them needing another preseason or 2 before getting up to speed. If we grabbed a nick vlaustin, ollie wines type with their pick 7ish, plus the player, we also look after ourselves short and longer term.

  13. Really don't see what all of the fuss is about. Priority picks and bonuses? I'm more more interested in the players on our list sticking together and saying "it's up to us to change and make us a stronger club". I'd rather see us improve with viney, toumpas, Kent and jones another preseason, Evans, nicho, trengove, grimes, terlich, tommy mac, blease, Strauss and watts all keep naturally improving by playing games together and with the addition of pick 2 (or 3,4) pick 20ish and a big chase of dale Thomas or Taylor Adams, we could improve a lot quicker than everyone thinks.

If buddy franklin joins up with gws, which would most likely put them out of the running for Tom Boyd, what are everyone's thoughts on trading say, our pick 2 to Carlton for yarran or Lucas and their pick 7ish, or st kilda for their pick 5ish and maybe a 2year deal for montagna or dal santo. I only mention this as IF gws would overlook Boyd, they would jump for the chance to get him.

  14. Reminds me of our CEO who is also a [censored] that uses big words to justify cutting bonuses, pay rises and promotions.

At least Schwab genuinely loved the club and spent the cash on desks, and not paying off lawsuits.

    Uhhhhhhh......?

  15. Reported on seven news tonight that "Melbourne still remain committed to snaring Paul roos as coach next year, and have reportedly gone cold on Mark Williams."

It was seven news, and it was sandy Roberts. So taken with a grain of salt, however it seems that roos is first, second and third preference. Neil Craig probably rounds out the top 4.

  16. GWS are clearly targeting senior players this coming offseason, i think a player trade is more likely than a draft pick trade.

That's fair, I also forgot they have to cut their list size over the next year or 2. I wonder if they would take a fitzy, Dunn or Davis? Probably ask for gawn, hogan or frawley though won't they. I'd entertain Jordy, jamar, spencer or possibly blease or Strauss.

  17. At the ground, it's often harder to realise who is going well in stats and who isn't. For example, I thought col Sylvia was bloody good tonight, real intensity and purpose, some great chasing and some of his skills were first rate. Yet watts I thought was a few lapses in concentration from kicking 7.

    For mine, live

    6-terlich

    5-n jones

    4-Sylvia

    3-watts

    2-nicho

    1-gawn

Dawes was great, frawley and Rodan unlucky. Nice change to have excessive best players to pick, opposed to struggling to fill the 3,2,1!!

  18. I would rather they had a couple of extra rookies and played Couch or Magner, it is pointless having Rodan on the list and hopefully at the end of the year he won't be any longer.

He is past it and should never have been drafted, he's not part of our future and wasn't part of our past, he typifies all that was wrong with Neeld's tenure at the club.

Don't disagree with you saying he isn't part of the future. But he is the bottom tier of players on a list of 40. I think Rodan adds an element of X factor and speed, he definitely holds up a place while grimes viney etc are injured and Kent, toumpas keep learning. Also cover for Matt jones if he gets tired.

I think your displeasure should be focused more at the recruitment and development of the 2008-2011 period, than worrying about that of Rodan filling in for a season or 2 while juniors develop..

  19. Shane Valenti says hi. As does Pedersen - always stars at this level, but except for occasional flashes, can't put it together consistently at AFL level.

For every Shane Valenti, there is a Michael Barlow. There is Dayne Zorko, there is an Ian Callinan, a Danny Stanley. A lot of blokes who perform at second tier level but don't have the chance until they get a bit older. I've already mentioned Magner earlier in my posts.

  20. I guess that's the question, what's better for the development of guys like Blease, Nicholson, Evans, Bail, Tappy, Davis etc etc. Is it better to play them at AFL level and expose them to the speed and intensity of it, or better to make them earn games at VFL level against seasoned guys like Magner.

I'm not sure which is better.

Yeah, I think we've been burnt previously gifting games to players who haven't handled the step up. I think the guys like Kent viney and terlich have that aggression and self belief to back themselves early on in an afl game, where as I think taggert, strauss, tynan etc are all still dealing with confidence and body issues.

Still doesn't excuse why magner keeps ticking over big vfl numbers and can't have a sustained run at the top level, yet Byrnes/Rodan do. Must be Byrnes and Rodan can do a lot more with 10 disposals than magner does with 20. Would love an answer!
