  1. Sorry to hear you are in Adelaide. Very sad. On the other hand a wet track might just be in our favour. Fancy us in the wet and should be beneficial for the crumbing forwards around the packs. Just got to get it in there and get it to the ground. Hogan and Dawes can do that.

Thank you! It's no melbourne that's for sure. The new stadium is very impressive. I don't know I agree regarding the wet deck helping us. Especially if we don't go in hard like the second half last weekend. The forwards amd defence seem fine, it's going to be contested ball and clearances again and as much as I hope I'm wrong, they have far too much strength there. More so with viney missing.

  2. For everyone's information, I'm in adelaide with work and it has bucketed down here overnight and is forecast to throughout the rest of the day. Tomorrow is also looking quite ordinary. Wonder if that factors in with the final team.

  3. Just to pose a question... How can Essendon with all the crap that's been placed on them etc able to beat the reigning premiers & almost the runners up from last yr???

Our club must have imbedded poor culture in its DNA....

Say what you want about them and what went on behind closed doors or off field- but that playing group has heart. They play for each other and that jumper and it shows just about every week.

  4. It must be between the ears.

Dockers midfield is not quick but they smash you.

It is effort and we had little after half time.

    Mentally weak.

How hard is it to pressure and tackle aggressively.

Your last sentence is a question I've asked for years. I've coached underage teams and I've coached senior players, and one thing that I can never understand is how they expect to make up space on a player if they start 1 Metre behind him, be it a stoppage or around the ground. Our players are always half a body behind at stoppages. You watch every Centre bounce where we were mauled, our players aren't in front holding their ground. They are either half a step behind with minimal body pressure, or they are plain missing. Macca is the best example. He has a hand on his opponent all game, giving him the shitz. Viney is another. I just want to see them hunt the ball a lot harder, make sure you're close enough so that your tackles stick and they can't get the ball away. Watching the replay, you see why we get goals flooded 8 or 9 in a row. We do the same thing every time. Do they play tighter when they have conceded goals? No. Do they niggle or try to block their opposite number? No. Do they even bother to start in front at a contest? No. It's the most basic things that this team still can't do and that is why we are opened up more than a call girls legs on a Saturday night.

  5. What Newton's primary role? If it's to kick goals he's been ok. If it's as a mid he's been disappointing. I thought it was the second and hoped he'd be the high possession good kicking mid we need. He's showed little of that to date.

What did he play yesterday? And if it is the goal kicking high half forward he needs to apply forward pressure. Jury well and truly out for me.

While he hasn't been a high possession winner as yet, he has looked damaging at times. He can win his own ball and he is a solid disposer. We are talking about a guy who has played less than 10 afl games, and just 2 at his second club.

  6. Surely there was a virus or flu strain or something going on for so many players to play that badly and have no energy. I've never seen Howe, Jones, Dunn, lumumba, Tyson, Vince or any other senior player fumble so badly like they did today. Even the first half- those guys couldn't get near it. It was newton, garlett, vanders, Kent and viney who were getting the ball into hogan. I've stuck up for Dawes since he signed but yesterday just ruined it. Trying to run through tackles and getting pinned, dropping sitters and moving so slow you had to line him up with a goal post to see if he was moving. Thank god hogan is there.

  7. We lost the game in the midfield and we need to inject some run into the team. We should bring in Matt Jones and JKH for Dawes and Newton.

Dawes is big and slow and those blaming the delivery are mistaken. He gets poor delivery because he is too slow to get separation on his man. He also has terrible hands and is out of the contest on the deck. He is a liability.

Newton would be stiff given he has kicked some good goals in the last two weeks, but he lacks speed for an outside mid and had zero tackles yesterday. I would have Cross ahead of him.

Terrible call re newton. Absolutely terrible. In fact, on a thread full of so many horrible calls, that stands out. You're better than that.

  8. THAT'S IT!!!

This is a good post, and sorry for cutting out all the rest of it and just quoting this bit, but I wanted to highlight this bit.

When Tomlinson went off, they were forced to play small, and from then on, they killed us. You'd think that losing their main tall forward & second ruck that early in the game would kill them, but it killed us instead. It forced them to play even more small, to run the ball and to kick low into the forward line instead of bombing it.

And it left Dunn, Howe & Garland sharing one sorta-tall (McCarthy) and two smalls.

    And the game changed completely.

Doesn't explain why we capitulated in the midfield. The amount of times Jamar taps straight down the throat of an opposition mid is terrible. I rate Jamar highly but Christ he does that often . Tyson, lumumba , Vince and Jones hopefully won't ever all have shockers again on the same day either.

  9. If he is out there then he and the doctors have ruled him fit

If you're playing you're accountable, especially when you're the captain.

And this is coming from his biggest fan. He was shizen!

How often have we said that? Give him a break. He's been great week in for 3 years now. Everyone has an off day. I wish people would realise today was just gws being far too good. The momentum turned and all of the sudden the ball bounced there way, ricochets went there way. I mean smith, Cameron and shiel all kicked goals out of their Azzes. Before we slam this group let's see if they bounce back next week.

  10. Dawes is useful for giving the forward line structure and yes he chases and puts on pressure but he is on $500k a year. At that price tag he needs to be a marking power forward who more importantly then any other forward line roles, needs to kick some bloody goals.

Tyrone Vickery is on 450,000. 500k is about standard for a key position forward. You want a good one, it's gonna cost 700k plus. Yes dawes was terrible but stop going on about his price tag. If it's not him, it's Pedersen (300k) or gawn. I think the dollar value clouds judgment. He is still better than Vickery. Today the disposal was terrible but I agree, even he should have pulled in those 2 marks.

  11. This game will be won in the coaches box. Last week roos showed some tricks using Kent and viney in tagging roles that no one else would have predicted. Roos is very canny in how he has motivated the players individually and as a team in the past. (Referring to Richmond game last year and the essendon comeback) very optimistic today.

  12. Heading along with 5 mates. None are melbourne supporters so there's a chance I can convert at least 1 or 2 if we put up a good show. A big positive today will be the price of beer dropping. A few years late though, I've spent enough time in the bar after we are out of games at quarter time! Got a good feeling about today though. I just have a feeling Nathan Jones is going to lead us to a win!

  13. Rumours circulating Ablett has reinjured his shoulder, looking doubtful not only round 1 but also a large part of the season. Hope not as he is a great player to watch. However gc will need to find an extra 35 disposal, 8 assists, 4 goals and 8 tackles somewhere if he misses.

  14. Not another beat up Saty thread derailment. His tone and obvious pride of his interactions with players etc may grate some, but he provides useful information. If his manner annoys you guys more than you value his information, please just ignore him. If you like the information, then ignore what annoys you. Posters are not going to change him by endlessly beating him up in these threads.

Well said. Getting pretty pathetic how every thread turns into this. You know what to expect from him, if you don't like it, don't read it, or get to training amd start your own training threads instead of wrecking demonland for others.

Thanks saty for your Input. I've been in new Zealand for 3 months and your input has been great and highly appreciated. Will be hoping to see some form from the secondary mids this week like michie, bail etc to get some confidence against a drug depleted dons team

  15. Who the [censored] made you a Mod? Nobody, and let's hope to God that never happens, the way you want to dictate what is said here.

You've had a crack at me before for making a simple joke, so you obviously can't handle anything negative re MFC whether it's a joke or otherwise. When you attack, yes, attack others you claim they can't handle a joke, but you clearly display a thin skin when on the receiving end. You're an attention seeker, nothing more (OK, perhaps a name dropper as well, everyone loves an ND). You just can't wait for these threads to be derailed and descend into a discussion about YOU. You stoke the fire until it ignites, that's only if your training report introductions don't do the job (lemon suckers, hairshirt something or other, no idea WTF that's about), that baiting is completely unnecessary. You are the head-derailer, and in your own words - jut silly!

Here's where we part ways old boy. I had enjoyed reading your training reports until they descended into a self-inflating steaming pile of crap, and in your own words, you have left the real stuff to others. There are some really good training reports coming out now, so thanks to those posters who actually focus on the training, not their own agenda. Best of luck to you.

A last piece of advice if I may. When you're taking your training photos, aim up. I see your photos and I see an alarming number of mens groins. Not the sort of thing I'm interested in. <not that there's anything wrong with that>.

So ignore it is for you. I'm sure you'll get by. There's plenty on here that stand up for you, but they'll learn when their opinion differs. For the record, I couldn't give a [censored] what replies come from this. I simply want to read reports, discuss games, and have a light hearted joke here and there. Any [censored] that wants to try to control the discussion or can't take a joke, feel free to ignore me. I DGAF.

Someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

  16. I am sure the club tried but that is why I was so keen to give up pick 2 or 3 for an established midfielder. There is nothing like exposed form to lessen the risk when bringing new players into the club. Even though Tyson has few games under his belt, he showed enough to suggest that he could make it in the big league.

There should be few surprises with Lumumba and Gartlett - we know what we are getting. I recall we all got excited when we got a father/son selection of another dashing wingman turned back pocket in Chris Johnson. Lets hope the young Stretch has more of his father in him than Chris Johnson did.

100%. It would be interesting to hear just what offers the club actually recieved/asked on regards to pick 2 and 3. Had clubs known st kilda was to take McCartin would this have changed.

I wonder how unfortunate the club would have been had the current F/S bidding system been in place for Chris Johnson, and what we would have given up. Young Stretch already has the exposed form at sanfl level that matches his work ethic and wiling Ness to improve to suggest he could play a lot of games for the club, but again, we've been burn by that hope too!

  17. I would caution anyone to suggest that any draft pick is a win until there some runs on the board.

I am cautiously optimistic with the current draft picks with caution being the operative word.

Many first round draft picks notoriously do not live up to their footage. This is not just a syndrome that has befallen our club but all clubs - unfortunately our club has had failed draft picks more than most.

Sorry Angus, but pick 3 has been particularly bad with the only true star being Judd. Dusty is very good - Griffin - great and poor. Here is my optimism - we may have the best no 3 at our club since Judd - and that is Tyson.

Apologies, I meant it more as we have a face to the name, instead of pick 3. I'm not sure any melbourne supporter could possibly claim a draft pick a win after seasons gone by.

I do agree with your point however, and the signs early of Dom Tyson do look encouraging. For his first real season to maintain such a high level most the way through the season was very impressive. If we could get half that input from Petra cc a and brayshaw this year, you would be very positive about the future.

  18. RE-read the Frawley thread again and tell me if you would still like to maintain this position.

edit - interesting thread - read the first five pages...then go to the middle of the thread...then go to the end of the thread. He apparently was much required at the beginning of the thread - by the middle when he still hadn't signed there was great shift and many suggested that we would be better off without him and by the end he was no loss at all.

There was some support that pick 3 made him going worthwhile but I beleive that many of the negative views of him were coloured because he refused to re-sign and the expectation was that he was going.

Would be interesting to see the link between those changing views of Frawley, against his output on field as the year progressed.

As it stands, he left to chase his personal dreams of an afl premiership, we were handsomely rewarded and allowed us to take the player titled in this thread, along with Angus brayshaw.

Now that we have seen footage of our compensation, it's fair to say this has turned into a win-win situation for club and player. I suspect this, along with the Dom Tyson trade, prove that in the current climate, there can be multiple winners arising from free agency/ trading and perhaps we all need to relax if we face with the same scenario again in seasons coming.

Unless it's nathan Jones. A club can not afford to lose a player more so than Jones and Melbourne. However I don't see that being an issue.

  19. Is his disposal any better than Tom's?

    Can he play forward?

Don't get me wrong, I'm really stoked, but just interested to know.

Yes and yes, possibly even half back. While he is tall and has grown a heap in the past 18 months, he is incredibly quick over the first few steps for a guy his height, and reads the play well. Unlikely to see any senior footy next year but he is a well grounded young man.

  20. Really? I solidly disagree, but then again, from a position of ignorance, I may have said the same.

What's the point if one of those players isn't able to take the field in a year's time?

Or younger players go off the rails as a result of their influence?

Surely that has to matter more than just their onfield ability.

Not that I know anything about beams, but Christensen is a good kid who typical of a early 20s adult making more money than he can spend. If ox turned it around so well with his gambling issue, I'd hope that he could too. At least he has sought help, however costly it has been.
