  1. Ricky didn't have his own thread, and given there has been a bit of talk about him I thought I'd start one up. Ricky has obviously shown a lot off promise in his time at the mfc but has not been able to cement a spot. I think we'd all agree he can play when on song but he is inconsistent. For me, I think one of Ricky's strengths, his strong marking for his height, is also his biggest weakness. Ricky needs to play as a small forward, a crumber. He is surrounded by taller players, yet he is inevitably the one who tries to go up instead of staying front and centre. I'm not saying that he shouldn't use his marking; it is a dangerous weapon when one out or when you have a clear sit, but in pack situations he should be playing the crumber role. Add to that his forward pressure and courage I can see him making it, but of he doesn't adjust that aspect of his game he will continue to struggle.
  2. Brent Moloney had his best season so far since coming to the club from Geelong in 2005 winning the Keith "Bluey" Truscott Medal and polling 19 votes in the Brownlow Medal - the best for the club in over a decade. His strength and leadership out of the middle was invaluable. 3. Despite missing all but the first six games of the season with a foot injury, Jack Grimes was given the MFC leadership award which highlights the esteem in which he is held at the club. I think I speak for all Demon supporters when I express the hope that it’s all plain sailing and full fitness from now on for the young Demon. Games MFC 2011 6 MFC Total 32 Goals MFC 2011 1 Total 3
  4. Frawley suffered a major setback when he tore a pectoral muscle during pre season training but recovered in time to make his return in Round 2 against Hawthorn and played in every match after that game. While he failed to emulate his All Australian form of 2011, the key defender was still a tower of strength in the backline, finished third in the Keith "Bluey" Truscott voting and continued to grow in stature as one of the game's emerging young defenders. 5. Gawn was not expected to play much senior footy if at all but a combination of injuries to other ruckmen and his own outstanding form at Casey saw him play four AFL games this year. Another pre season and some hard work in the gym and on the track could see him rise to regular status at the top level. 6. The promising young Demon midfielder again showed glimpses of his ball getting ability and was showing definite signs of improvement until a scaphoid injury put an early end to his 2011 campaign. 7. Hard at the ball midfield tagger and defender who had another consistent season. Was again given some big run with roles and took a few scalps in a role that often goes unnoticed. Unfortunately, his disposal by foot often lets him and the team down. Games MFC 2011 15 MFC Total 95 Goals MFC 2011 2 MFC Total 16 Games CSFC 2011 3 Goals CSFC 2011 2
  8. Fell out of favour with the selectors early in the season and, after dominating in the VFL, came back for a couple of productive games for the Demons at the end in more of a midfield role. At the Scorpions, Bate was runner up in the best and fairest and voted MVP. He also came second in the JJ Liston Trophy behind former Demon Shane Valenti. 9. Big things were predicted for Bennell after he completed a strong preseason but his form in 2011 was patchy. 12. After two years on the club's senior list, the beanpole forward finally broke through for his first AFL game against Port Adelaide in Round 24 after a season severely marred by an ankle injury. Prior to that he had been slowly coming through the ranks and showing good signs of development as a pacy ruckman/forward who can take a nice grab. 15. The long wait to see Blease in action at the top level was really worthwhile. He made a Clayton's start against the Bulldogs in round 15 when he came on late as the substitute but then went back to Casey. Blease persevered and eventually won a Rising Star nomination with his pace and brilliant footskills late in the season to stamp himself as player of the future. 17. Davey had a poor season. He was often tagged heavily and he suffered a knee injury that kept him out for half a season and from which he never really recovered. His frustration told on him late in the season when he was uncharacteristically involved in an incident which saw him incur a week's suspension for striking. 20. Sylvia is a sublime but slightly erratic talent who, for one reason or another has never gotten the best out of himself in his time at the club. That is not to say that he is not one of the team's better players (he finished 10th in the best and fairest) but, as Brent Moloney pointed out in Bluey night, he should be aiming for the top. 21. Newton's season was restricted to just 3 Melbourne matches in 2011 due mainly to injury and, after two years as a rookie without consolidating his place in the team, his AFL future seems problematic. 23. The Demon tall man was making good strides in the ruck at Casey biding his time and waiting for an opportunity to return to the AFL when tragedy struck against the Northern Bullants. On the same weekend that number one ruckman Jamar injured his knee, Spencer damaged his ACL and missed the rest of the season following a knee reconstruction. 25. One of the club's big improvers in 2011, Martin came back from off season hip surgery to play a major role as the second ruckman to Mark Jamar. Moreover, when the Russian and Jake Spencer were both injured on the same weekend in late April, Martin competently took over the mantle of the team's main man in the ruck and he did it well.
