  1. We’re never out of it with Petracca, Oliver, Viney, Lever, Gawn, May, Kozzy in the team.

yes we have had issues off field but our issue has been injuries since 2021, when you pay a fortune for two forwards that cannot stay on the park (Brown and McDonald) you’re always up against it.

list management is how you continually show up and perform, losing Gus is like losing Selwood to the cats, he cannot be replaced, I have doubts on this year because of the loss of Gus and not what happened over the preseason.

We could potentially have $2.2-$2.5 (loss of Gus, BBB, T-Mac) in cap room next yeah, we we can bring in a decent forward, back and ruck to help supplement our older guys, we’re hanging around the top four until Viney retires.

Lamb has the biggest job next offseason, if he isn’t working the room of every other club this year, yes we will be a one hit wonder, if he can add some pieces around Petracca, Oliver, Viney, Lever, JVR, Kozzy look out.

I think we’ll miss finals this year and really draft and trade in heavily next year.

Goody was very “us vs the world” in his Gus tribute, I got the feeling he was trying to convince the players more then the supporters base.

Im there round 0 cheering on the boys!

  2. I think we’ll slide this year because we weren’t ruthless and moved on BBB and TMAC and addressed our forward line.  We gambled with Pettys foot and it could blow up in our face, a lot rides of JVR who is so young.

the only way we’ll be a top 4 team is if we shift our game plan forward of the ball, we’re a team that floods back and we never get the cherry picker goals over the top, if we can counter our defence and have the likes of Kozzy, Chandler, ANB, Fritsch out the back, we can kick a winning score.

We need to dominate the centre bounce, we have 1-2 good years of our captain left and we need to capitalise on his dominance.

2024 will be the year to slightly tweak for 2025 or we’ll need to blow the list up with Multiple changes for us to challenge again.

ill be their round 0 live, hoping i absolutely love what I see…..

  3. I’m heading down from Brisbane for the game, I always try and get to the first game of the year.  Never been to the SCG before.  Keen for any suggestions for decent pubs close to the ground, I’ll be waiting on a swans supporter to finish work so I’ll be drinking solo somewhere 🤣

I 100% agree on the first point.

I would argue the key reasons we didn't take advantage of our midfield and defensive dominance during big games were:

    • our poor field kicking in general, which meant we were matched or beaten on scores from turnover - something thta barely happened all season
    • poor final kicks inside 50
    • our mids and utilities not scoring enough goals
    • our woeful accuracy from set shots and shots from general play

As for the second point, that is what i'm talking about in terms of all finalists, with the slight exception of the Lions, basically employing the same game plan.

Come the pointy end of the season ALL teams, except the lions against Port, struggled to score from the back half because the game plan involved territory and trapping in the front half as much as possible.

In our QF against the Pies and semi against the Blues we were actually better at transitioning and scoring from the back half - and on turnover too.

The problem was we were scoring point not goals.

The Pies and Blues were more accurate (an old fashioned word for the stupidest and most misleading word in footy - efficiency) and took their chances. And as a result both won.

Your points above are spot on, what I was getting at the other day, if we continue the chaos football in the F50 next year, we needed to target some forwards who can jump and clunk marks, with our forward delivery in finals, it was too long and high (Moore had a day out), I would love to address our forward entries to fix our “forward line issues”.  My frustration is we never get an easy goal out the back, the majority of our shots are from an angle, we never short kick on a 45 degree out of the forward long to move to the defence. We would work so hard and burn so much energy to kick a single goal (or 5 behinds).  It would be next to target forward who suit our game style (fingers crossed the 2 newbies are just that)

Somehow pies are adding to their fwd line stocks with talent eg schaultz yet what we doing hoping that our injury riddled fwds of BB, Tmac, Petty , Melksham .. I’d be surprised if any get on the park & backed up with young Jvr .. Fullerton who can’t get a game at the lions will get us through honestly we have our heads buried in the sand

I agree wholeheartedly mate, the she’ll be right attitude of posters above or go again with what we have and “hope” for improvement is a head scratcher.

    Repeat after me.

We. Do. Not. Have. Forward. Line. Issues.

A forward line with Petty, Fritter, JVR, Koz, Nibbla and Chandler is easily as strong as strong as the Pies forward line that netted them a flag: Mihocek, Elliott, Hill, McCreery, Ginivan and resting ruck.

Even if you add McStay, its still no better than our lineup

And that's not even factoring in that despite being completely written of by most fans both Tmac and BB could srill offer something next year and Jefferson is still developing.

Which is not to say a gun key forward wouldn't help, but for good reason it clearly isn't a major priority.

💯 we have a forward line issue, BBB & Tmac and add Petty can’t be depended on due to injuries, JVR is only young and is inconsistent, our small forwards can struggle to impact, Gawn can’t kick straight and that leaves us Fritsch and Trac.

then we have a system issue were we have unlimited forward line entries to no avail or we mark it on the boundaries.  We never seem to get out the back goals like Pies/Lions/Port do as we’re a defensively minded team.

if we continue to enter our forward 50 like we have over the past 2 years and we don’t have another tall who can clunk marks and kick goals….. we’ll go out in straight sets again or struggle to make top 4

  7. Sounds like we aren’t addressing the forward line issues.  Another year of TMac and BBB playing 10 games between them, An unproven Fullerton.  We have lost depth and haven’t added any proven contributors.

2024 could be another wasted year and May and Gawn only getting older.

    Hard to be optimistic.

Rumoured that the Lions will re-locate home games to Springfield while they rebuild the Gabba for the Olympic Games.

Will be interesting to see how that works. Not sure if it will be one season or two and then of course in the Olympics year I doubt we will see games at the Gabba post June so they can lay the running track

Rumour up here is between 4-6 years the Gabba will be out of action for the lions, 3 years to build, it needs to be set up for two years prior to the Olympics as part of their testing and commissioning requirements.  Lions and Cricket QLD/AUS are blowing a gasket over it, potentially they’ll just do a renovation and upgrade one stand to add seating.

I've wanted to not believe it because i love Petts, but this has been bubbling in the background for over a month.

1m a year we can't compete with that, i reckon he's as good as gone.

Sadly I have to agree with you, there’s too much smoke to be nothing….

when playing, he’s one of my favourites.  Will be a massive loss.

Yze runs the box. He did that at Hawthorn too and nobody complained about Clarkson.
We won a flag with Goodwin coaching from the bench.

I understand we have just disappointingly lost two finals, but not everything the club does needs to be thrown in the bin.

    2021= flag

    2022= straight sets

    2023= straight sets

Yze and Richo have been in the box and Goody on the boundary, we will now have to bring in a different person to fill this all important role or Chaplin/Richo moves into that role.

The head coach position has evolved into this and Goodwin was one of the trendsetters. There's a lot of demand on head coaches so I think it's smart to have a solid right hand when it comes to strategy so Goody can be more of an overseer and also focus on the relationship side of things.

I think this role is going to be one that we need to nail and it can't be anybody. Whoever we get needs to be his eyes on gameday and a very quick thinker.

I totally agree but that’s a massive gamble to have a newbie in the seat with Goody on the bench.

I might be over thinking it….

  11. It was interesting to hear him say (paraphrasing) “at my last two clubs, I was in the drivers seat during game day”.  That’s really concerning that Goodwin is on the bench and another coach is running the game, while he has pep talks with the players.  As much as I hate the bloke, there is no way Chris Scott would do that, you can see him and the other coaches changing their style throughout the game from the box.

  12. We also need to address the kick ins and the total lack of offensive options, it’s either:

    1) long bomb to Gawn to the left

    2) short kick to the boundary to Salem/Bowey to the left

3)the clearly telegraphed long bomb to the square to Gawn

  13. I’m all for some new forwards, but the game plan will need to be tweaked, it amazes me how hard we have to work for a single goal, then the opposition gets two easy ones out the back (against our biggest weapon our defence).  I could count on one hand the amount of easy goals we got in the second half of the season. I don’t think we got one out the back in the finals, Pickett, Chandler all have speed, we must push back so hard to cover defence that we lose that options, which means we lose finals by single digits…..

The cop outs to top all cop outs.  If that has seriously come from within the football department, they should be sent a please explain, moved on from their position.  That has made me more angry then losing the game on Friday night!!!
