Let's not forget that the "new" board at the end of 2003 was an extension of the Szondy board of 2001-3 and the 4 subsequent years of profit (the last of these was well below budget and thanks to the accounting methods adopted only just in the black) were achieved only because it was being propped up by the AFL to the tune of $1m - $1.5m annually. Had the club had access to that sort of largesse from the AFL in the 5 years 1999-2003 we would have been sitting on a handsome surplus now instead of wallowing in $5million in debt.
