I always taught my kids to applaud good play by any team.

If you're going through the BS that is going to the AFL these days, you're doing it to see the best of the best play footy.

If an opposition team or player, does something spectacular, why wouldn't you acknowledge it. I don't mean cheering them on, just acknowledge good play.

Boooing is just plain dumb (unless it's Maynard)

As for those getting stuck into JVR, the kid has just turned 21. Apart from Fritta, it's been an incredibly up and down forward line and delivery is only just getting sorted out, let alone playing with the same blokes up forward week in week out.

Be patient, I reckon he's going to be a Coleman medalist for us once he matures and our forward line and systems doo too.

This re JVR. Attention everyone he's a second player 21 years old trying to make it as a key forward. How many do you know of that dominated in their second year ? Some of the comments here are way over the top.

Yeah they are both playing in the lap of the injury gods . TMac works well down back ,but I hope in doesn't get the stage where they move him forward to cover a problem.

The only "ins" forward should  be Melksham ,"rotating smalls" and players coming up from Casey.

Milkshake eventually would have  a good feel to like TMac and BBB

    McAdam?

so, ok, no official grade below careless (for a charge to be made)

however that is what maynard achieved. it being regarded as a "football action"

i guess the real grade below careless then, is a no-charge

so to reword my original, greene's defence could argue it wasn't careless and therefore no-charge at all. by deeming it accidental or a football act.

wonder if gleeson will allow a bio-mechanics expert to give evidence on greene's mid air split second choices?

Depends on which outcome the AFL wants.

If people think Schache is soft who lacks physical presence then they're going to get a rude shock watching Fullarton play..

Not possible that there's anyone softer, never seen anyone in 60 years watching football.

Christian and Gleeson (who was the AFL advocate at the Tribunal prior to being made its chair) have a vested interest in seeing Collingwood's competitors for the premiership be weakened and imv their bias has been shown at various times.  Port missing SPP for some key games.  We missed Kozzie for a key game.

So how did Cameron get off a with a key game vs Cats this week ... maybe the AFL is concerned about some optics that @Ethan Tremblay didn't suggest in the post below.

Blind freddy can see the potential for conflict of interest of the MRO and Chairman and the AFL should fix it - at least rotate the Chairman to someone who has no interest in the accused's team nor who they play in the following weeks.

    Of course it won't!!

This, I think I don't think many would complain if both Gleeson and Christian were removed from their position. Gleeson far too much influence imo.

I've kept away from looking and posting on D-land after Thursday night, it was as bad a performance as I've seen from us for a long time. Worse than the Swans gave of round 0 because at least in that game we gave a yelp before getting overrun.

Smashed in every facet of the game, no winners on the night. TMac, Lever, and May gave as much as they could in the face of constant pressure and the balls going inside the Lion's forward 50 had absolutely no pressure on it. My biggest consolation is that I don't think we can play worse and it's insanely rare that every one of our prime movers in the middle have such terrible games.

I think the players and coaching staff need to put a pen through it, obviously still review it properly but also regroup after the bye knowing that that isn't "us".

I'll also add that we need to be manage BBB in blocks of 3 games, I don't know if that was the plan and injuries/the fixture prevented it, but he was not capable on impacting the play at all.

Tough night but if you offer me 4-2 at the start of the season I'd be happy with that.

It was as passive an effort I"ve seen Melbourne put in for a long time.

Precisely. How  can it be that 6 rounds in we are physically exhausted? We did have blooded a number of young guys so can understand forget may need a rest but no idea why the senior player (other than Max) appeared out of petrol tickets from the first quarter. Was it an outlier and if so, still have to wonder why.   What happens at the pointy end of the season or even worse, finals. That is was is most concerning. What makes the most sense is that the bulk of the team were suffering some kind of illness but that could also be a convenient narrative to cover over a very weak and flat performance.

Everyone caught Viney's virus from the week before.😁

Reading the comments on this thread the most used word looks to be ‘disappointing’ … and no one can argue with that one-word summation.

It was a disappointment on so many levels.

Our team structure never looked like appearing during the game. I noted in the preview I wrote that the game would be won in the midfield but I never imagined that one midfield would be so dominant.

Between the arcs I would say we won one position and drew, possibly, two others with the rest of the game in this area of the field comprehensively won by the Lions. The wings, Langdon and Windsor, matched, or almost matched their counterparts and Max was our only winner.

Max’s tap work was very good, but our midfield was non-existent at his feet. So much so that in the later stages of the match he was taking the ball and trying to clear it himself or belting it as far away from the contest as possible to try and get some breathing space.

Petracca was the best of a bad lot, Viney subdued and Oliver about 10% of his usual effectiveness due to his hand injury. The rest of the rotations through there with Salem’s early hamstring were ineffectual. We were out played, out manned and out pressured.

It is all very well to say that is not the way we play the game and scratch your head over it all but that is not good enough in this circumstance. The team and the coaching panel need to work through this and come up with answers, not excuses.

Oliver should not play again until his injured hand is healed. The midfield needs to be looked at with a re-visit to the drawing board to ensure we are playing the best fittest players in their strongest positions.

With such a performance from the midfield I cannot be critical of either our defence, which was under constant pressure all night, nor our attack, which did not see the ball in their half of the ground for about 2/3 of the night. I feel that both of these groups of players did ok in the circumstances.

Work needs to be done on the midfield and questions need to be asked of the performance of the coaching panel in the leadup to the game and during the match.

A break and then Richmond next where the footy world will be watching for a response from us. Talking about it will not get us anywhere.

You've raised all my points here, all I will add is I think it's concerning and I know we are trying to tweak the game plan but we seem to be falling away in areas that made us great. Pressure/tackling, clearance/stoppage what has happened we used to be in the top rated teams for these one percenters now we are trending significantly downwards

Sorry, but Max was not “great”

He may have had 51 hit outs - but a large chunk of percentage of these were either straight to or sharked by a Lions player. There was more movement and positive signs from him in the last quarter. But the game was over at 3/4 time. And Lions has already put the cue in the rack.

    our best plyer by far
