The question to me is how to show respect for the passing of a leading world figure.

I thought the one minute silence at our game was quite appropriate and respectful for her as a person and the incredible life she led and as a world leader.  The turning out the lights gave added poignancy and respect.  It is something I would hope for when any great world leader passed.   Crikey we do it for sports people!

I don't think we should have played 'God Save The Queen'.  Very few Australians of any colour or creed identify with it nor recognise it as relevant to us.  The one minute silence in the dark was sufficient and I would like to think relatively neutral, politically.

Summed (most) my thoughts up nicely.

Love, hate or be indifferent to the monarchy (I don't love them), if it's good enough to have every cause have a "round", it's good enough to be respectful to the Monarch on their passing.

Playing devils advocate, if Jack Viney was Berry and Lochie Neale was Clarry would people's thoughts be the same?

Neale would be walking with a guide dog or tapping a cane for the rest of his life is that was the case.

The bloke should have been suspended. He gouged Clarrys eyes.

There's little doubt that getting Grundy means more of the Goodwin boundary line to pocket system.

Bit like ordering a diesel driven car as electric cars come on the market..... Timing

That second line makes absolutely zero sense.

As does the recruitment of Grundy.

He was coming back from a knee injury and then had stress fractures of his ankle.

As long as our medicos give him the all clear I’m ok with it as he is 28 and if he can get back to full fitness could be handy for us,  especially during this window of the next 3 years in that quest for another flag.

Hoping we can make it to the next page of his thread without someone thinking it will be funny to mention "the Richmond doctor"

Straight Sets in 2 home Finals is not acceptable

Goodwin got outcoached by a lot of his peers this year.
It must be a long ruthless summer

Thats quite a few very late draft picks required/incoming to delist all of those players.

Let's hope our recruiters have some decent smokies on the books.

  7. Not angry. Not even a bit.

We looked like a pretender weeks ago. Plenty on here were expecting the team to suddenly click and start running over others when in fact the longer the season went, the worse (and more predictable) we dropped off after half time.

I know people were wishing and hoping for the best, but that's exactly what we got. This is the best that this years side could play. A very beige forward 50 with not much flair and almost no marking presence, and a midfield that couldn't outrun anyone.

We have a great list. We need to get the right fitness staff and folg the snot out of them over summer and build back the belief that came with having a huge tank.

Oh, and recruiting a tall forward who can take a grab consistently would be nice. Use the currency we will get for Jackson to target Harry M. We won't get anywhere by kicking to a pack containing big blokes who can't hold a pack mark to save themselves.

I think we can bounce back.

Does the playing list think the same?

Can never be sure with you, Faultydet, whether you're being sarcastic or not. Just in case you're not, the answer to your question is politics. A politician who removes a public holiday without replacing it with another risks a huge backlash. I know Kennett did it when he removed Easter Tuesday and Show Day as public holidays, but he did that when he was first elected and had a mandate to do just about anything. The current Premier (or, if you prefer, the Premier after the Victorian election later this year) almost certainly won't be in the same position of strength as Kennett was early in his premiership.

Deadly serious on this one LaDee.

I've always thought we have burdened our small business owners with too many freebies for their workers.

Would be very happy to see the back of Queens birthday and Labour day as public holidays.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. After a respectful period of time, there is likely to be fresh discussion about changing Australia's system of government from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. Whether that decision is made or not, as part of the debate, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Queen's Birthday/King's Birthday taken from the calendar and replaced with another public holiday not necessarily on the second Monday in June. (I'm not proposing to argue for or against the concept of a republic in this thread as it's inappropriate and unnecessary at this time.)

Why does the removal of the Queens birthday required a replacement day off?

I say get rid of it and send people back to work.

The thing is, he and everybody else who’s tolled the bells of failure pretty hard of late are likely to be correct, because we aren’t the favourites this year, and we’re looking sore and sluggish. But it’s not exactly risky or insightful to suggest such a team won’t win the premiership, is it?

I don’t think anybody here deserves an “I told you so” if we don’t win a flag, because it’s just so obviously the likely outcome to any half-interested observer of the game

But taking a dump on people who like to think there’s still an outside chance is just a bit unnecessary and boring. Do we really need to lambast people for the crime of being hopeful?

That's an awful lot of carry on for the line you highlighted.

People complaining of "whinging" and "whining"

The sensible ones call it pragmatism. I'm still hopeful but I expect we won't win the flag based on the evidence right in front of me. It's pretty simple.

    Embarrassed? Towelled?

In our three H&A games against Sydney and Collingwood we led all of them at three quarter time.

In the final against Sydney we led by two goals halfway into the third quarter of one of the best and most intense games of the year.

In the Geelong game we weren't at our best but still closed to within a goal in the fourth.

They were all in their own way frustrating/disappointing, as every loss is to an extent, but in no way were we embarrassed in any of them.

Ok, so we led at 3/4 time against Swans an Colonwood in 3 games and lost ALL 3 OF THEM.

    We also lost to Geelong

Whats your point mate? We are not playing like a challenger, and unlike last year we have shown NOTHING that would intimidate the other contenders.

Tell me what I missed, because I don't think its much.

Just putting this out there dazz, if we smash Brisbane and you do a I wAs WrOnG sOrRy post, I’ll being using the barf emoji for the first time ever. This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about when I pulled you up the other week.

Even if we smash Brisbane this week, nobody in their right mind would be claiming they were wrong to doubt us.

We have been embarrassed so often by top 4 teams this year. I reckon you would search long and far for a team that wins a flag after being towelled in every high-pressure game they played in that year.

We are not winning the flag in 2022. We can reload for 2023, but prepare yourself for a letdown if you think dazzle is off the mark this year.

  13. Staggering that so many on here can't see what's directly in front of them.

We are not a premiership side this year. We may get over the Lions this week, and that has been well analyzed by a few on here who have mentioned the low pressure game that Brisbane play and that we thrive on.

But as Colonwood and Sydney have shown very clearly this year, we are far from elite when it comes to moving the ball under intense pressure, particularly from the midfield into the forward line.

As much as it pains me, it's Geelong/Colonwood/Sydney for premiers this year. We are making up the numbers.

I just returned from Perth on a Virgin Flight and met a well-known player manager and forward scout for the swans the player manager stated that Freo are waiting on Lobb to Decide to go to the Bulldogs they will have to give up plenty for Him that will open the way for Jackson if he decides to go Freo  there has been no indication that he wants to leave also he has a big Knee Problem that requires an operation.

Melbourne will want plenty maybe Young or Serong have been spoken about among the Managers one interesting point that was made is Jackson appears happy with Melbourne and the WCE have not indicated any Interest and are concerned that he has no Forward Craft.

The Forward scout told me that Don Pyke of the Swans is a Brilliant Strategest and is the big reason for their improved Form he maybe the Coach of Essendon

Also, he said Goodwin is very Conservative COACH   and not daring the issue compared to other sides success in the Finals has been the enthusiasm that youth brings is infectious Melbourne needs to be daring

The player Manager told me THERE WILL BE CHANGES AT THE END OF THE Year with coaches.

Lastly what our strength the defense has become our weakness other sides realize that if the ball is below their knees they panic.

I think we have blown it but still have firm belief in those proud leaders Max Clarry Viney May and Brayshaw that they may prevail

Sadly, you may not be too far of the mark (presume you are predicting total crowd).  But having said that, I really don’t get it.  65k plus members, plenty more supporters and this suggests about 45k at best of our mob will turn up.  Sad, verging on embarrassing.

Dogs and the unborn are not allowed in the M.C.G.

I reckon of the 65k it's maybe 70% actual flesh and blood members who would want to attend a game.

  17. I find the atrocious commentating to be part of the entertainment.

    The barracking

    The fawning

The belittling of any (old) minnow club except the teachers pet Bulldogs.

The spectacularly wrong calls or those missed altogether.

The boys club guffaw at each other's funnies.

    The constant contradictions.

    Brian Taylor.

The repeated comments "that won't work" "goes bang" "wowee"

It's a laugh a minute but a very dangerous drinking game.

We're not beating Brisbane up there so as long as Collingwood beat Carlton which is likely or Fremantle beats GWS we will finish out of the top four.  If that happens we have to hope Sydney loses by more than us. Doesn't look good.

    Nah.

    We have the Melk.

Make space on your wall for another premiership photo bud.
