Lol, maybe the $600k comment by Roos reinforced Martin's belief that he was worth that much so he kept looking? Now he'll have to settle for less and Roos has caused some drama at another club with one sentence. Maybe too much of a conspiracy theory, and probably makes Roos out to be a bit of a [censored]. Who cares! He's OUR [censored] now! Just a thought.

Agreed. We "looked at" Martin as well and then said no thanks. Nothing wrong with squeezing all the fruit in the aisle, as long as you pick the juiciest one at the end.

Yeah but Blackadder > Mr Bean. Also some American comedies are ok. I like 30 Rock

lol, Blackadder never gets old. I love that show. Sometimes I imagine Barry Prendergast during draft time as Balldrick - "I have a cunning plan..."

No PP just announced.

When Do We Find Out About the Priority Pick?
Bluey's Dad replied to Grimseyisgod's topic in Melbourne Demons
Anyone have a link? (edit, thanks stuie) I'm struggling to understand how we couldn't be given anything at all, given our record. The AFL paint themselves into a very dangerous corner, given how poor our record has been. It sets a very very low bar for future applicants. I suppose such things only matter those trying to maintain a record of consistency and fairness. -
Thanks Hardtack, that's enough! So much stuff, so little time.

Ok, I have a few problems...
-
If he trades 'Viney the Geodude' I'm going to be very upset. We've been stuck with a team of Zubats for too long. Zing!
-
I'm into a lot of things... My list is overflowing atm, I recently added another 3 TB drive to my media server. I'll never get to it all. I have a problem...
-
Oh man, all you're doing is adding to the already stupidly long list of stuff I wanna watch. So much cool stuff I had forgotten about or didn't know about. I've heard Brazil is brilliant but never seen it.
-
It was indeed far too long. The first time I saw it I went to get up after Bilbo sailed away on the ship, then I had to sit back down again. I guess Peter Jackson felt he had to tie up a lot of things.

Boxing Day I think. What was wrong with the ending? Except of course that it ended 34 times.
-
Exactly! Nothing wrong with the occasional spectacle. I really like Michael Fassbender. I'm looking forward to the new X-Men Days of Future Past movie. He was really great in First Class with James MacEvoy. You're right in that Dark City beat The Matrix to the punch on presenting some philosophical issues like reality and simulacrum. But I felt the end really let it down, and it didn't quite reach the creepy level of tension I thought it was shooting for. It might be because of its age, and had I watched it when it was first released maybe I would feel differently. I also think The Matix's religious connotations gave it an edge Dark City didn't have, however as you say, Dark City came first. Also I thought The Matrix sequels sucked. They played up the religious angel in the third one especially, with a lot of Fisher King references and I thought it was really disappointing given what was achieved in the first movie. I heard that Stargate is being rebooted into a new movie trilogy, any thoughts on that one?

The problem I find with the walking dead is I keep watching it waiting for it to cross the line from 'solid' to 'awesome' but it never quite does. The characters often make really really dumb decisions. The good definitely outweighs the bad after season 2 though, as low flying said Completely agree on Mad Men, Oz, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. I'll have to give the wire a go, although I heard it sort of lost it towards the end.

It wasn't an issue before because Abbott wasn't forming government before. I don't see how this is an argument. Also not raising an issue in a demonland thread is not evidence that that issue does not exist. Very spurious reasoning IMO. For example, last year I commented to my parents (both Liberal voters) that I don't know how Penny Wong reconciles her sexuality with her party's obvious political anglings to suffocate the gay marriage debate. If you remember, the Labour spin machine managed to position the issue as a 'conscience vote', knowing that the Liberals would never agree to one and therefore the motion would be defeated. But I didn't post it on demonland, so I guess it didn't happen. I'm not sure how much clearer I can be: If Abbott has appointed his cabinet based on merit, then the question must be asked - where are the meritorious women of the Liberal party? If you insist on bringing history into this debate - the modern Labour party did not have this problem. Off the top of my head they had Tanya Plibersek, Penny Wong, Nicola Roxon and Julia Gillard in the first Rudd cabinet. Their subsequent performance is not relevant to this debate, as we cannot say that they performed better or worse than a theoretical male counterpart that didn't get the job. They were better at the time of promotion and that's all we can say. However, I don't think history is a good illustrative tool in this argument. No party in history has the exact pool of players Abbott has. It is not useful to go back an examine what other leaders did with their pools of political talent. What IS relevant is why Abbott's particular pool seems so shallow on the female end. Women who can run a cabinet portfolio clearly exist. Judging by Abbott's appointments, they do not seem to exist within the current Liberal government. That is the issue and that is the problem. I never made out that it was the greatest moral challenge of our time. I just think that it's relevant that women are under-represented. Racial groups also seem to be under-represented. The problem IMO lies in the undiverse talent pool Abbott has at his disposal, and the circumstances that allowed that to occur (whatever they are - I honestly don't know what they are). Robbie, I am not sure what the Bill Shorten quote is in aid of. You... want us to see the Labour party spinning this into political capitol? Thanks for pointing out the bleeding obvious. Like Ben-Hur, I think you have fallen into the trap of "X person disagrees with Abbott, therefore X person must agree with Labour". Also for daisycutter - I am not "outraged". I simply think this is an issue that requires exploration. Furthermore, as I have said, I do not think this is an Abbott problem, at least not in its entirety. It seems to be a Liberal party problem with institutionalised homogenisation which is now relevant because they are in power. If there is a better explanation, I would genuinely love to hear it. But the argument that Abbott appointed his cabinet based on merit in fact supports my argument that the Liberal party has some issues with female talent because they were simply not there for him to choose.

I'd pay good money to watch him bash the [censored] out of himself.

The problem with that line of thinking is that it means that, somehow, there is only one woman in the whole Liberal party capable of administering a cabinet-level portfolio. I find this very difficult to believe. If it is the case, and Juilie Bishop is the only woman in the entire Liberal party who's equally or better qualified than her male counterparts to be a cabinet minister, then the Liberal party has some serious recruitment and development issues. That a woman is capable of performing this job is not up for debate. The debate as I see it is why there is only one of these women working for the Liberal party.

Dark City is vastly overrated imo. It's not bad, I just don't see why it seems to get such massive props. Unfortunately my recollection of Bladerunner is sullied with mutliple viewings of theatrical cut, director's cut, directors extended cut, zomfg extra special extended edition with 13 more seconds cut etc etc. I don't even remember which one is the real ending any more. I think the 'proper' director's cut ends in Deckard and Rachael going into the lift and just cuts to black. Although it's better than the original voice-over ending, I still felt a little robbed. I know Scott's trying to get us to decide for ourselves what's supposed to happen next, if Rachael will expire or if Deckard is a replicant etc, but I felt this was a little TOO open ended. It will be interesting to see how the he goes with the sequel, especially now that he's put the Alien movies in the same universe. I hope it turns out for the better, because I though Promethius was pretty bad, despite some great work by Michael Fassbender. I have no problem with the Fifth Element. It's not trying to be more than it is and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't put it on any top 10 list but it was a fun movie. I am a meat popcicle.

Sorry, saw it a long time ago. I think I'll have to give it a re-watch. I have fond memories of The Day The Earth Stood Still, but I have a feeling if I watch it again I'll just be thinking about the remake and it'll make me sad On a brighter note, both versions of The Fly were pretty good

I loved this movie when I was a kid but haven't seen it in years. Leslie Nelson and Ruby the Robot right? Or am I thinking of something else?
-
I would love to see that team, however unlikely it may be.

When Do We Find Out About the Priority Pick?
Bluey's Dad replied to Grimseyisgod's topic in Melbourne Demons
This thread contains no priority pick news. -
Star Trek DS9 does a pretty good job with the post-WWII allegory, even if it is a slathered on a little thick in the first season. The episode "Duet" is one of my favourite pieces of television in any genre. It's probably my favourite of all the Star Treks because the villains were so great. Dukat, Eddington, Damar, Winn, Weyoun and the Changeling. Dukat is probably the best villain in any sci-fi that I can think of. His arc is probably the most interesting of any character on the show. lol now I wanna go watch it all again.
