Why is this so triggering to so many?

Chris Scott is one of the greatest coaches of all time.

That is impacted to some extent by Geelong being extremely well run off field and having an inherent competitive advantage by being in a regional town where a lower cost of living means players can take lower wages to help “beat” the salary cap.

Doesn’t make Goodwin any better or worse.

It's triggering because Chris Scott is an obnoxious Karmichael Hunt 😂😂😂

He was a 🤡 of a player but made the most of what he had.  And has done very much the same as a coach - an expert at maximising what they have and under him Geelong have stayed successful.  Still can't stand him though

I'm not convinced that advertisers aren't paying a premium for Friday & Saturday evening NRL & AFL

Sunday 3.20pm looks like it's being phased out but again, that can be related to the advertising dollar

They’re not because Friday & Saturday evenings aren’t a big audience.

networks love sports like AFL & tennis because they’re a baseline & draw a consistent audience. That’s why they spend so much on the rights. And then they use the sports programming to pre-promote other programming in their networks.   But compared buying spots in The Block, AFL games are comparatively cheap.

Aren't most of the games broadcast on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings?

And isn't that all prime time?

    Same deal for the NRL

As for ratings, the AFL & the NRL get huge numbers watching on FTA

Thursday is the only prime time in that bunch, Friday evening & weekend are off peak.

Footy ratings are consistent but outside of grand final & state of origin they do not record big rating numbers

Yes, but prime time on weekends would still be a lot more expensive than non prime time slots for the advertisers (on weekends)

Explains why there always seems to be a push for a twilight GF or night GF.  It can't be assumed that the push is coming from the AFL

The networks are looking for a larger, captive audience

Rugby League went to the evenings for their GF (Sunday) for the same reasons

Otherwise, if travel for the teams was the main reason, why not just have the game at 2pm instead

As for FTA TV, the NRL & AFL will continue to be in high demand for the commercial networks.  They need the 2 big sports to survive

And both the NRL & AFL can't go all cable or streaming or they'd lose a large percentage of their audience. The captive audience just isn't big enough in this country

For instance, on the weekends, people are more likely to be home in the evenings as opposed to during the day.  There's local Sport, horse racing, kids sports etc etc on Saturdays and Sundays but mainly before 5pm

Monday to Friday works the same way as most people are at work 9 to 5 (not all, but most)

Footy, other than the grand final, doesn’t rate that well and games are largely outside of prime time - so it’s never that attractive for advertisers.  Notice all the ads are at a frequency of 4+ a game? And it’s the same batch of advertisers? I’ve seen the AAMI three times already in this prelim.  That’s a sponsorship package rather than a regular buy.

What makes a football sponsorship valuable to a brand is the cumulative exposure to the audience.   The happy days of being able to buy a spot in Friends at 7:30pm on a Tuesday & reaching 1m+ ppl are long gone.

We lost by a combined total of 9 points. How is that a choke? We didn’t go 44 points up against an interstate side at our home and lost.

We finished fourth then kicked 7.11 & 9.17 to go out in straight sets by a collective 9 points. It’s hardly a stunning success.

  6. Hawthorn are in excellent form & will likely beat Port.

That said any Melbourne supporter who says they’re happy to see Hawthorn playing finals should be locked in a cell for a week & made to watch the ‘87 prelim on repeat

  7. This time last year the message was ‘if Clayton doesn’t meet the standards we’ve asked we will consider trading him’

Despite his meh 2024 form Oliver held his spot & there was nothing to suggest he wasn’t doing the required work

Should the club reverse on that & look to trade him I’d be extremely disappointed because to me it reads like they’ve moved the goal posts.  He’s met the standards we set but that’s still not enough so bye bye. That would suck

He wants multiple flags, wants to be a hall of famer with the record to match. He's said it before, I reckon he sees the writing on the wall at Melbourne we missed our chance at a dynasty, haven't won a final since the flag, missed finals altogether this year, key personnel have left/retired or are another year older, our already meagre crowds have dwindled and he wants to move to a big club that can win more flags in the few years before he retires.

Personally I think that's the main issue, the other stuff is all just rationalising his decision to the club.

Looking at the average AFL career he’s lucky he is to have won ONE premiership.

Nathan Jones is one example, he gave everything to the club and played the 2018 finals series but missed the premiership that he helped build.

It’s very disappointing that the reported reasons for Trac wanting to leave are mostly selfish.  I had thought better of him. It’s not good to see that all the talk about loving the club only lasted as long as everything was going his way.

He did his ACL in his 1st preseason. That's adversity in my books.

But it’s still professional sportsperson adversity which I’d say is completely different from the adversity a regular pleb faces.

he’s been a sporting golden child since his early teens, maybe his perspective is a little off

  10. He’s coming off like a bloke who’s never faced any kind of adversity ever & he’s not handling it well.

And whoever is advising him may not be giving him the best advice.

it’s a bad look to not make a statement to the supporters yet he’s able to keep churning out his sponsored social posts. Says something about the priorities.

(And yes I know the posts scheduled & committed to in advance but those schedules are easily changed)

So basically after being the player that made certain we won our first premiership in a lifetime he is leaving due to our unprofessionalism. That is so MFC.
