  1. "Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up tomorrow is a bum"
  2. Get rid of interchange all together and bring back the 19th and 20th man I say.
  3. That's harsh. Brent had his moments. I remember round 8 1998 like it was yesterday. Brent was (for at least one quarter in his career) a dead set legend. http://demonwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Round+8+1998
  4. I kind of thought Voss would have been well liked and respected amongst the playing group but reports today suggest there was some tension between him and some players (Rockliff was mentioned). So it will be interesting to see how Brisbane respond to the sacking. Is it possible the Lions will be a bit of a mess this week and GWS could snag a win? Could this sacking put us in danger of winning another spoon? I suspect we can rest easy in the abilities of Sheedy to secure a loss for GWS.
  5. Having grown up with footy at the lake oval barracking for South Melbourne, I didn't appreciate their move to Sydney. Footy wasn't the same, my little heart was broken, and I gave footy away. It was great! For quite a few years there I became a productive and valuable member of society experiencing a calm world full of beauty and the joys of life. My anxieties disappeared, I took up running, I discovered music, learnt to play guitar, got myself a girlfriend, finished uni, travelled the world, and launched a career. Still, the lure of football was everywhere, and in retrospect it was only a matter of time before I would be enticed back to the dark side. The crunch came when my brother (also a former South supporter) invited me to a Melbourne game in 1987. Now why would I want to go and see a dud team like Melbourne? However, I did not not see the danger, nor did I reckon upon the appeal of that 1987 team. Damn you John Northey and the confidence and competitiveness you instilled in that group – it was irresistible. I was back, I was a Demon and glad to be there. So if Melbourne were to disappear, it will be a low-down dirty sinking feeling of despair. You will be bitter and twisted for a quite a time. For some it will be release. But I reckon for most of you – YOU'LL BE BACK.
  6. Didn't Brisbane do well out of the 2008 draft - Rich, Redden and Rockliff - that could have been our midfield! I know its easy looking through the retrospectascope but in this case it is probably of some interest given we were dead keen on taking Redden but missed out by waiting for him to fall to pick 35 and it wouldn't have been a huge stretch to have picked up Rockcliff with our late pick (#51) given he fell along way from expectations to be picked-up in the PSD. As for Rich, at the time it wouldn't have been totally out of the question to have picked him up given he was one of 3 being touted as #1 ( but I'd still take Jack both then and now - please don't turn this into "we shouldn't have picked Jack Watts" thread). As for our picks #1 Watts, #17 Blease, #19 Strauss, #35 Bennell, #51 Jetta. I guess that seemed a pretty fair return at the time but I can't help thinking about this everytime we play the Lions. Edit: Oh yeah, Rohan Bail at pick 64 was apparently our revenge on Brisbane for taking Redden as they were keen on him at pick 69 - take that Brisbane Lions.
  7. Took the family to the women's game last night. I was really proud of our football club. Their involvement is to be applauded. I can't tell you what a buzz my daughter got seeing young women playing footy so well on the MCG. Congratulations to all involved and for a historic win to the Melbourne Football Club.
  8. In regard players leaving clubs, I loved Bob Murphy's take on it. When asked if he would leave the Bulldogs to play finals he said what was important to him was that the Bulldogs won a premiership not for him to play in one. Although he knows his premiership window has closed, he wanted to stay and help. Robbie Flower springs to mind here. I hope we have some present players that prove to be of that calibre. I'm sure we will.
  9. Great day as usual down at Luna Park. The kids loved it. The players were in good form - signing autographs, chatting to fans, kissing babies and smiling for cameras. Great team effort I thought - they all worked really hard in the clinches. Best on ground would go to young Jack Viney who beamed a big believable smile without fail for every camera pointed in his direction and conversed enthusiastically with every approaching fan (and there were plenty). The highest number of possessions would go to Jack Watts who had a line about a mile long waiting for his autograph. I think he was signing for the whole 2 hours. Don't be surprised if he's in the rehab group this week with a bandaged hand. On a negative note - the scenic railway was closed this year (C'mon. Luna Park without the scenic railway? Why not just get rid of the sauce at the pie stand as well.) On a positive note - the summer ride attraction of the "Power Surge" had been removed. Last time I went on that ride it was more like the "Sour Purge" than the "Power Surge" or at least that's how I felt afterwards. Also, this year there was no accidental double entendre style conversations about riding the Big Dipper. Many thanks MFC - t'was a great morning.
  10. I like your style Jnrmac - if we keep talking Wines down he might slip to pick 48
  11. Yeah - we haven't had anyone appropriate to sweep up since Clint Bissell (or was that Bizzell)
  12. Foxtel replayed round 3 Melb v Richmond today. Some of Cale's efforts left alot to be desired and was scathingly highlighted by Malthouse and the commentary team. For anyone like me who always has doubts about moving players on, it was a poignant reminder of how disappointing Cale could be. I can't help backing anyone who pulls on a Melbourne jumper but even for me his time was up. All the best Cale.
  13. Just discussing on another thread how I once thought (do i really have to admit to it again) that "you could build a side around Matthew Bate". So thought it might be worth a thread where you can confess your worst player predictions. Come on - fess up. You'll feel better.

  15. Thanks mate - I feel a little bit better. This is probable worth a thread of its own - "Your worst predictions"
  16. Yeah - I thought he looked a real player in his debut years. So much so that I remember these words coming out of my mouth "You could build a side around Bate" (cringe) I love Bater but really aren't too proud of this statement now. Please disregard any of my future predictions about players.
  17. I had a bit of a chat with Jai at the Demon's family day earlier this year while we were waiting in line for the Scenic Railway at Luna Park. Wasn't really sure who he was until he signed my daughters footy. I was struck by what a nice bloke he was. I had a bit of a Seinfeld moment with him though when I asked if he remembered the Big Dipper. He said he did. I went on to tell him how I rode the Big Dipper quite a few times in my day, what an awesome ride the Big Dipper was, and how nobody mentions the Big Dipper much now since the "accident". He looked at me kind of weird and the conversation kind of finished up. Didn't occur to me until much later he was probably too young to remember the ride but not too young to remember Robert Dipierdomenico.
  18. No - sorry, no inside information from me. Just thought, given the injury, everyone harboured some anxieties about Mitch Clark's future but nobody was mentioning it much until now. This topic seemed to be "the elephant in room".
  19. Mitch Clark's Lament I'm real sorry ...... Mitch Clark You took a stab in the dark You chose the demons to make your mark You must be watchin' Freo thinkin' "what the f@#$" Could of had September action on the park With a team run by a Lyon's bark With more wind in its sails than the Cutty Sark Instead your floatin' with a team on a Noah's Ark Fighting for survival on seas so dark Searchin' for your partner in the forward arc I wish you more than an ounce of luck A thousand apologies to you...Mitch Clark
  20. Jack Watts is probably sitting back watching West Coast also wishing we picked Naitanui
