Clayton Oliver - Round 1 Rising Star Nomination
nutbean replied to dees189227's topic in Melbourne Demons
nice reply Mandee but I was more thinking...well I took it to mean...never mind.... ( a warning to me may be in order) -
I also think it is as simple as not enough genuine forward movement - our forward line work rate and commitment to presenting and representing dropped off - ( it did lift markedly in the last quarter). We did not work hard enough in the 2nd and 3rd quarter but that was mainly going forward - I was pleased to see that we did work hard defensively for most of the match.

yes..it's called the MCC smokers stand old chap ( sorry ...couldn't resist)

Agree on his biggest problem and yet he didn't get caught once on the weekend - I thought he moved the ball on quicker than usual - he went at 70% D/E and had three dreadful clangers. Have a look at what he did in close - it was quite good - and that was undone and more by three horrible disposals. (interesting how we rely on stats - I looked at clangers and Viney had the equal most with 5 - understandable as he is taking kicks under extreme heat. The other on 5 was Watts - I must have been watching a different game)

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN KENNEDY

just watched - it was Salem.... -
No better example than Wayne Carey ( and his duels with Glen Jakovich). Carey is arguably the best forward of the current generation and what made him so good was his tremendous marking combined with his work ethic - running his opponents ragged - getting in front and letting his strong hands grab the ball. Jakovich constantly bettered him because Carey abandoned all the things that made him great and just wanted to wrestle with a guy who was stronger than him.

"He stalls the things he doesn't want. and avoids a direct answer committing his cabinet/government to a firm decision. So NO, he does not say what he means, and will try to deceive Via being indirect 'media talk'." No pollie speaks directly and is black and white - but I don't think I have come across a pollie that was more transparent in what he was going to do and what he wasn't going to do than Abbott. It's a compliment and a slap all in one.
-
Not just silly - just plain wrong. The knock on Dawes regarding his hands are spot on - he does not take enough marks ( and drops marks when he is in a good position). But as you rightly point out, he works really hard on leading up the ground and I have seen him give a spray to others for not minding the mark or running to mark the same player defensively that he is covering but I am yet to see him "sook". And his 1% er's are his trademark but again, as mentioned elsewhere, 1%'ers are not enough - a power forward is paid to take marks and kick goals and he has not done enough of either of these.
-
I think the problem may lie in your viewing skills. It wasn't a good game from Tyson and he had three very bad clangers but he hardly had the ball 17 times and hardly took 5 marks and hardly had a couple of tackles and hardly pumped inside 50 - 3 times. I think he has enough credits in the bank that he won't get dropped after one game.

Surgery on both ankles at seasons end may shed a little light as to why his 2015 was pretty ordinary ?
-
Just need to ask why when Dawes drops marks it goes along the ground to opposition backman to mop up but when Frost makes a physical impact and doesn't mark it allows Kent and Garlett to crumb. Are you suggesting that Dawes drop his marks to opposition advantage ?

sorry - disagree on this. I don't think anything that Abbott did from the first day that he ook over as leader of the libs was a surprise. From day one what we saw with Abbott was what we got. If anything I think his inflexibility and inability to compromise on his belief's was what cost him in the end.

Clayton Oliver - Round 1 Rising Star Nomination

He has a trick that I think will become a trademark like the "Dusty fend off". Although not quite as successful as the gem of a handball he did against the Saints, on Saturday a few times, he took a tackle and got his arms and the ball almost at head level and fired off handballs from height. -

Again, it just re-enforces in my mind that the experts try and extrapolate what 18 year old kids whose bodies and skills have not yet fully developed, playing in an age limited competition will turn out like in the open competition of AFL.They get it right and they get it wrong. Interesting for me is the way Roos handled Oliver - he had no hesitation in put him right at the coalface in the centre square to get clearances yet did not thrash him highlighted by his limited game time. Oliver talks highly of the influence of McCarthy. I cannot stress that we are a new club that does two things - drafts talent and then develops talent. I no longer feel we will be successful because we get high draft picks that were talented juniors. We will be successful because we have some high draft picks that were talented juniors that we will develop. -
I haven't maligned Jones but I also won't declare him as a "good player" until he does it more on a consistent basis. He has had a very good preseason and was really good on Saturday - didn't fumble and disposed well. But that doesn't wipe out how ordinary his last 2 years have been. I desperately want him to succeed. I want all the footballers who have had "their tickets stamped" to turn it around. It is very healthy to have competition for spots and if Jones keeps more fancied footballers out of the team that hopefully means because he is playing so well he has to be played - that is not a bad thing.
-
You cannot emphasis this enough. When players stand still your disposal needs to be 100% accurate and you second guess yourself when trying to play a ball into a stagnant position upfield. Contrast how much easier it is to dispose of the ball well , when everyone is on their bike, a step or two clear of their opponents and providing options.

He is one of those unique footballers that makes it seem that the ball sees him and comes in his direction - it just means that he reads the play as it unfolds and gets to where the ball is going to be. -
Disagree on one thing. Feedback - there may have been basic comments come back but the real feedback comes after they have done the match review. I was talking to an assistant at another club and the review of the game can take 3 to 4 times as long as the actual game as they dissect plays and setups with a fine tooth comb. When they review the game with the players they don't show them the entire game - they see edits to highlight good aspects and poor aspects highlighting what they should and shouldn't be doing. The real feedback comes after the review is done. The assistant mentioned that at first he was amazed at how much the coaches actually miss during the pressure cooker of the actual game. Any feedback immediately post game would be basic and broad.

Maclure is way too over emotional. He takes a small point which may be valid and turns it into Armageddon. He is rarely correct in his predictions . The problem with fox footy is they are on 7 days a week covering every game and this requires a raft of commentators and "experts". To quote a number of coaches - "we really need to close the gap between our best and our worst" (Maclure to me is one of the worst)

because he has been cleared to play - which will be on GF....

I usually don't jump in but I will on this one. You didn't think he would make it back - fair enough opinion as many thought that. You didn't believe he should be afforded any special treatment - don't disagree You thought he should bear some responsibility for playing injured - not sure on this one - I think he just wanted to do the best for team but certainly he did not do himself or the team any favors. You mentioned that if he plays again in the team he will have earned it ( and good luck to him). Undeetered/ Cranky - I think there is a big difference between thinking he will fail in his come back and wanting him to fail.

Not only is it greener, but when these pollies step up to the top paddock, their grass can dry out and whither very quickly. I had high hopes for Julia Gillard - disappointed I had high hopes for Malcolm Turnbull - disappointed I am not sure that if an Albo or Morrison got into the top job that they would be able to step up to the plate either. ( that's purely based on the last series of PM's who have promised but failed). Contrast this to Howard ( who again I was not a huge fan of many of his policies) - he went from "yesterday's man" to the last competent Prime Minister we have had.
