How often do you see players how are called to "play on" or if there is" touched play on call" who clearly do not hear the umpires call. Happens pretty regularly. (FYI - I am poster who is deaf or partially deaf to other peoples arguments)
-
I havent seen the full replay of this weeks game but he played alright last week but still doesn't look ready to me. Needs more time I think,.
-
I have heard of players being duped by opposition mimicking their team mates by yelling out "leave it" or calling out their opponents name to hopefully get a handpass by accident - I have yet to have heard of cheating by impersonating an umpire and I would suspect that if it not illegal that if it did happen it would viewed in a very poor light and action would be taken to rectify the practice.

Umm... this argument is a nonsense. When an umpire calls a player to play on - an opposition player could have also made that call that out as well. Is there a whistle involved in a play on call ? Do you suggest that players ignore these calls ? Every player in the league responds to an umpires call of "play on" ( some better than others) Umpires give frees and stop play by whistles but there are also many calls which are verbal without the whistle and players rightly respond to them. Edit - sorry to be a tad aggressive but I cannot fathom any footballer watcher thinking that footballers do not respond to umpires verbal calls
-
Simple - if an umpires call can lead to a choice of action by players after the call then it should not be reviewed. The idea that players do not respond to umpires calls is a nonsense. Umpires calls (such as "play on".. or "made an effort .. play on" or "touched play on" are clear and precise - and players absolutely respond to them. You also see players that do not heed umpires calls and get pinged At the Swans game a player had a split second to respond to the umpires call of "not 15..play on" and didn't and got pinged for dropping the ball.
-
Please....I have watched the replay and the call was so loud and clear that it could only be an umpire - the umpire actually yells out "touched play on" twice whilst the ball is in the air !. Does pose an interesting question - is there a rule regarding players mimicking umpiring calls. You do hear players yell at the umpire "ball" or such like but if any player thought the touched call was anything but an umpires call I'll go he.

Even if Kelly turns out to be the second coming of Jesus that is not the point. If a journalist wants to make a comparison between two players they should have knowledge of the two players they are comparing. To admit that he had never seen Tyson play tells me what a hack journalist he is.

Spot on - the touched call the field umpire made may have affected the next play - who is to say that our defenders didn't run the forwards under the incoming ball as they heard the touched call and didn't care if went through the goals because of the touched call.
-
It rewards good kicks and handballs, marks, goals, tackles and taps - we know there is much more to a game than that - and there are nuances. Our top super coach player this week was Bugg and whilst I thought he played well - some of his disposal was iffy and I would not have had him in our top 4. Cloke got points for kicking two goals - I thought he was poor and he got his two goals by handballs over the back to him alone in the square. However the goals did boost his rating.
-
The problem with Supercoach - you can smother the ball, shepherd, block and punch the ball away from your opponent all day and you will get no points. Most importantly and I will use Brayshaw and Kennedy especially as examples - they both had quieter games but continually crashed into contests. Whilst they may not have got the ball themselves by being physical and by not allowing easy ball to the opposition they helped our cause as we got our fair share of the ball from spills. Also pure defensive games ( like Dunn played on Sunday) get no credit in Supercoach. It is just not helpful in deciding who are our bottom performed players. Edit - Lumumba scored 62 points and Howe 53 - only 9 points difference between them ? enough said..... How Points Are Scored Stat Description Points Awarded/Deducted Effective kick 4 Points Ineffective kick Points Clanger kick -4 Points Effective Handball 1.5 Points Ineffective handball Points Handball clanger -4 Points Handball receive 1.5 Point Hardball get 4.5 Points Loose-ball get 4.5 Points Goal 8 Points Behind 1 Point Mark uncontested (maintaining possession) 2 Points Mark contested (maintaining possession) 6 Points Mark uncontested (from opposition) 4 Points Mark contested (from opposition) 8 Points Tackles 4 Points Free kick for 4 Points Free kick against -4 Points Hitout to Advantage 5 Points Gather from Hitout

Very harsh - I thought he did his job well and made good decisions and he does kick very well.
-
I think the coaching staff are using him better. Some time deep and some time up the ground. Firstly makes us less predictable and on Hogan himself he is very aerobic so if you sit him deep the whole time and clog up the space in front of him you can put more of plodder on him - but once you move him up the ground you have to adjust your thinking and have someone on him who can cover ground.

What really impressed with Wagner was his composure.
-
So on what basis would you suggest that they select the team for round one ?
-
It was Gartlett not Petracca,,
-
What the hell is that ? A business as big as the AFL and at a press conference you can only hear the coaches answers - not the question. Seriously amateur hour.
-
Was it a different umpire that called for the review ?
-
pretty much my thoughts - you can make a case for no changes at all - however you want your best 22 in and that means you want Gartlett and Vince playing.
-
I understand that if a ball is touched on the goal line and there is uncertainty the umpires might review. I even understand that if the umpire DOESN'T call touched off the boot and the ball goes through the goal that they may want to review to see if it is touched. If there is NO call from the umpire you, as a defender or attacker, will not alter your decision as the ball comes towards you. However, yesterday, the umpire clearly called a ball that was kicked at Collingwood's goal "touch play on" loudly and clearly. The ball just flew over the players heads in the goal square and went through and the umpire then asked for a review to see if his call touched call was right. I'm not sure this is not taking a review too far. When the umpire called touched play on as the ball is coming towards the goal , that may change the way defenders/forwards actually go at the ball. I don't think a review in those circumstances should be allowed. A review should not be allowed where the original call of the umpire may impact the way the players attack a contest.

I agree with his value and know how good he is. I agree with that when is fit (and playing well) he is best 22 but his body of work in season 2016 would not have him walking into the team next week. His lack of output so far is more than likely due to the ankle he has been carrying all year but on all numbers he is well below what he produced in the first half of last year. I think the bottom line is that they need to get his ankle and fitness right so he does get into the team and stay there.

Sigh.. he is not a terrible footballer - he is just an average footballer who can take a great grab but doesn't work hard enough. (now Jesse White......)

At the moment Matt Jones is best 22 (didn't think I'd be saying that), Kennedy is best 22, Bugg is best 22. We have a fair few on current form who are best 22. The players that if they are not in the team are considered a walk up start because they are available has been drastically reduced. Form is a fickle thing and this could change in a week ( lordy, I hope not). If he is fit and playing well he is best 22 but you can say that for many players - this season ( and yes, I agree that he is struggling with fitness) he is down in disposals, marks, tackles compared to last season. Through the preseason and the first 3 games his form says he is not a walk up start in the 22. I'll ask again - with Vince and Gartlett back, which three would you drop next week to include him.
-
He made a few blues but his positives way outweighed his negatives. I do like that he is not starting to mark well overhead as well. I do find it interesting that his detractors for today's game, but our captain , who also played a good game today, handballed to opposition more than any of other mids and that has not rated a mention.
-
That makes selection a little easier - I am of the opinion that VDB is not a walk up start like a Vince is. If VDB is fit to play I see him at Casey.
-
Reflecting, this is the first time in memory I can think of in the last 5 years where I have looked at the last two weeks of performances and have looked at the senior team and haven't had to say - this player and that player have got to be dropped - now who played well enough at Casey to be promoted. This is now a case of two definite starters (Vince and Gartlett) need to come into the side and one newby kicking the door down to play (Petracca) and who the hell are we going to drop to make way for them.
