Tmac is also quite aggressive with his kicking, much to the chagrin of many. And prepared to take players on with his trademark side step/baulk. Up forward this aggression has a much better risk/reward balance. I loved the bit of play that set up the Garlett free kick and goal. Which he must love. I wonder if even with Hogan and Gawn back in the side they might give him some little burst up forward in some matches to keep the opposition unsettled and to free him up.

They also called me. Funnily enough on my to do list was changing energy suppliers for both gas and electricity. Have been meaning to do it for ages but hadn't got around to it. They helped me do so and i score a dees 2017 jumper. Nice one.

Indeed. But most will expect us to lose. Because we are favorites. So we will win. Because the expectation is that we will lose. Because we always lose when we are favorites to win.

I dont want to jump to conclusions but i'm lichen that prediction

Yes. Fair dinkum, jusy hopeless. 1 billion plus for tv rights and they cant get a bloody website right

Weed. Yes his tackling and pressure were first class. And as Goody noted he was important from a structural perspective. But whilst he flys well for marks which creates opportunities for small forwards (and Pederson) he simply does not mark the ball enough. He'll get there though. He has the class.

Agreed. One of the great wins. And 5 minutes into the last you could see there was no way we were going to lose. Some random thoughts on the game: A serious comment: Oliver is already almost the best mid we have had for 30 years. His hands are incredible, his vision is next to none, his courage is unbelievable and his tackling is first class. But what really stands out is how quick his mind is and how this parlays into great decision making skills. That goal was an example. You could tell that even in the spit second he had he knew what he wanted to do before he got it in his hands. There are any number of less speculator examples, many of which involve him setting up scoring opportunities for team mates with great handballs Another serious comment: as good as Oliver is Trac might be better. Big call i know and in many ways they are different players with Oliver being more a pure mid. But good lord Trac has so much talent, is incredibly strong and is simply brilliant at setting up team mates for scoring opportunistic (he clearly values assists over shots on goal himself - and i have no doubt that is related to his basketball background as in bball assists is THE critical stat). Now i'm not saying he is or will be as good, but the player he most reminds me of is Leigh Matthews. He has similar explosiveness, strong thighs, strength, low center of gravity, great hands, hits contests at pace and with ferocity and most all vision. And like Matthew (and Oliver) he has a very quick mind

Really? You could hardly accuse the dees of not showing spirit this year. yes there has been 2 or 3 quarters where we have not been switched on but never for a match. Its our skills that have been letting us down not our intensity.
-
Yes. But not to as a strategy to stop the momentum or a run of the opposition. Quite the opposite. It was about being aggressive and creating or maintaining momentum for us
-
Excellent points. A big factor in our inability to get the game on our terms is not having Gawn in the side. He generates midfield possession, which is the key for us and Goody's game plan. I have to admit Lyons prediction his injury might cost us as many as four games (and potentially a final campaign) is likely to prove to be correct. In all likelihood we win both the hawks game and the freo game if Gawn plays.

Agree. All about tackle count. Remeber he had one or two in three weeks at senior level. 8 in rhe vfl will get him back in. At the exspense of jkh i suspect. I think hannan stays because of his intensity

He went that way because he doesnt have a bloody right foot. Shirts me to tears

TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND SEVEN
binman replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Exactly. And this approach started last year - and it is no coincidence similar arguments on Demonland were being had about development/picking for the future versus picking the side that maximizes the likelihood of winning a game now. The two best examples was Garland and Dunn being dropped and OMac and Wagner coming in. Watching Dunn today reminded me how the game has gone past him (despite his solid game last week). Slow, can't run up the ground and back and no real ability to play the zone. When he was dropped and replaced by Omac many demonlanders bemoaned his continuing non selection. Funny that a highly paid, experienced group of coaches should have taken a different path. And we were a couple of game off the making the finals. Go figure (though those same posters probably think we would have done even better if they had stuck with garlo and Dunn - double go figure). -

I disagree. Whilst of course goody would have one eye on the future goody is selecting sides that give us the best chance of winning games now. -
TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND SEVEN

Yep agree. Those were pretty much my thoughts. I add that clearly that prior to him breaking his arm they were apparently super impressed with training intensity and focus and i assure he did everything right rehab wise post injury. As you say i reckon they wont to back him in and give some continuity. I reckon he will play well this weekend, but i suspect if not he'll go back and be asked to improve in certain areas and ANB will come back in. Goody demands those sort of traits and left no doubt that Watts was not selected because he wasn't showing them. ANB was and as you say Kent has been dropped, i suspect because he is not showing them. A good example was that when dropped he seemingly played without much intensity in the VFL. A mistake i doubt ANB will make -
Confuscious also say the small (to midsized) fish are the sweetest

Live i thought how soft it was and would have been furious if it was paid deliberate. I saw viney lettint goddard know about but not properly until i watched the replay. Loved it. Goddard shits me, always has. He looks slow these days. Good on jack
-
Yep. It is very rare one game ends a career of a player at a club and i guess it is not the really the case with that game. But as you say that game stamped his paper
-
And Goodwin did.

And again i think that the facts do not bear your assertion out that from an 'from an intensity perspective, Jack Watts was very, very ordinary' and frankly it is ridiculous to suggest he went at 'about 10% all day'. And suggesting 'things went his way' implies he was lucky to get four goals rather then the reality of it being as a result of his hard work 5 of his 19 possessions were contested. Of his 5 marks, 1 was contested (a ripping effort where muscled his way to the front to take a chest mark and kick a goal). It is worth noting only Pederson, Petracca and TMac had more (2 each, with TMac's coming from 12 overall). He laid 3 tackles (and his season average is 1.8), with only Viney and Oliver laying more. Plus he ran hard all day. All of this after a five day break and having to shoulder rucking duties for 80% of last weeks game. But even if you are one to discount stats watching the game tells me his intensity was where it needs to be. And i i would argue Goodwin came to the same conclusion. I reiterate that there is no way Goodwin gives him votes if his intensity was down. No way. Goodwin could not have made it clearer intensity is a complete non negotiable in his team. Lack of intensity was the reason Watts wasn't played in the first two pre season games and is the reason Kent is not currently in the team. As if he gives votes to a player who runs around 'about 10% all day'. Get serious. And you think Goody gave him votes 'for his scoreboard impact'. Why then didn't Hannan or Garlett get votes?

We must have been watching a different game. Jacks' intensity was terrific. There was one contest in the middle of the ground that he perhaps could have got low and b lined a rather than try and flick the ball out basketball style (which by the way he is great at) but apart from that i he did not squib one contest and his intensity was terrific.. He tackled well (which he has donee all year - compare his tackling stats to say Kent, went when it was his turn, banged bodies in the ruck (something some don't seem to give him much credit for on DL) and flew for marks really aggressively, something Goody was clear they wanted him to improve. There was no better example than the somewhat lucky free kick in front of goal he got in the third. He earned that free because he put his body on the line. Many commentators had Watts as our best. And that's because he was good in all aspects of the game not just silky outside skills. Oh and reading back through this thread i just saw he got 6 coaches vote. There is no way Goody gives a fella vote who doesn't show the required intensity. No way.

Yeah i think it really suits Goody's game plan and style
-
I thought Goody did a great job before and during this game. He got selection right and as pedo notes in his post match interview with burgs they worked on their stoppage 'craft' during the week and despite losing the tap outs convincingly won the centre clearances. He got the boys right to play in what must have been a tough week. During the game i thought his positional moves worked. He put Oliver forward for perhaps the first time this season and it go immediate results. . Vince into the cente worked as did freeing up TMac to roam. Petraaca taking Hurley (who was brilliant i have to say) was clever. And of course getting us reset at half time and playing as we should have all game in the second half was fantastic. Top job.
