I wonder, he is as strong as any CHB going around, while he might not be able to out mark everyone he would at least halve contests and bring ball to ground. Leave some space for Oliver in the middle. Am not totally against it.

Who would you play as FF? Smith? I almost would prefer this set up as we would have great fwd half defensive pressure. He would be in the head of every defender, he has a reputation and draws defenders like flys.

Mad time to try it 2 weeks before finals though.

JVR and Friesche should be back next week

  2. Given our loss of Petty and the struggle to find a consistent CHF, I believe we should  centre on Petracca to play the role. He marks above his height, his power running, and given the role of running from the centre to the half forward line with his endurance, would run most Centre Half Backs off their feet.

Saints forward line is dangerous, hence having them sit on the bench for most of the game freed up May to cause havoc. if he had to mind king there is no way he would played as well. it was a win but sadly we do not look like a premiership winning team. Kozzie needs to sit one out, Ben brown was good on the lead, shame we see so little of it. i dont understand the need to bomb it into the forward line constantly, we have proven that we seldom take the mark and our smalls rarely gather the crumbs. Why do we keep doing something that is so wrong.

the saints layer man on man going into our forward line  which didn't leave room for short passing

i think the gap week robbed us of momentum heading into finals and then we were clearly walking wounded in the semi

it was a shocking end to the season, but we achieved the main goal of being top four - indeed, top two - at the end of the home and away

everything that could go wrong in the two finals did go wrong

To all the doubting Thomas, we are going to give in, we will get bent over. You know  nothing we stuck it out and won. The pies caved they had no choice. Go Dees.

Can't say that with Freeo. We were going to insist on 7 or under

Not quite correct. In 1965 we won the first eight (again many by small margins that tested our resolve) until we lost by 63 points to the sainters on Queen's Birthday under Norm Smith before he was sacked.

Then the rot set in and we struggled for the nest 55.5 years.

2022 does not resemble this era at all. In 1965 we had a lot of older players who had tasted success for many years and were on the way out. In 2022 we have a lot of younger players on the cusp of prolonged success (we hope). Barassi left, some retired and our ace in the hole, Jim Cardwell, was past his prime in recruitment and then zoning killed us off.

    GO DEES

Friend, sounds like you were there as I was. Your memory perhaps a little better than mine. I do recall the final win being against the Blues at Princes Park (so called in those days) and returning home believing we were well on track for another flag. 8 or 10? I don't argue. I googled the Demons 1965 season to attempt to keep the facts accurate. It records 10 strait wins, and 8 losses.  I checked the story with an ex-demon player of that era, who in fact went to South with Norm Smith. I shared his story. but the real story is the way the year panned out. A string of wins 8 or 10 in a row and a dramatic change of fortune. You're the historian, why don't you have the google entry changed. I'm a little less tied to the exact facts, just the sense of similarity. All part of the demon story.  Knowing the story with it many facets strengths that bond. Bring on the new chapter 2023.

    GO DEES

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but I searched and couldn't find it.

I read somewhere that TMac has re-injured his foot and won't play today? Anyone shed some light? This doesn't sound very good for Tom who has had a history of toe/foot related injuries..

Can't help thinking of Trengove, Mitch Clark etc.....

Someone stood on his foot in the closing stage of the previous game. One of those unavoidable happenings. There is a chance that it could have happened to anyone and they would most likely not have played

  8. How we celebrated the breaking of the 57 year Flag drought last year believing we had exorcised that Norm Smith curse. But 2022 had a little too much of a pattern to remind us of our history of pain.  In the post '64 flag year, '65 we began the year in scintillating form with 10 straight wins. The 'back to back' beckoned. The following week Norm Smith was sacked and we lost the game under Checker Hughes coaching. Norm was reinstated, but alas the damage was done and we lost the remaining 8 games of the year and we know the history of the 57 years of pain that followed.  Following our best ever final series of '21 and the drought breaking flag, we began in scintillating form, 10 wins in a row. The 'back to back' beckoned. The pattern is not exact but too close for comfort. Once again eight losses to see out the season to mirror '65. The only difference is we did win 6 in the current extended season.

To often history has a strange way of repeating itself, Let's hope 2023 truly lays our history of the twentieth century to rest and the new year of '23 extends our flag collection.

PS. nice to see the pies history of 'Colliwobbles' is alive and well.

  9. Next year we must start with a clearer solution for the forward line.  Van Rooyen is still a few years away and we cannot place all our hope in him yet.  Weid is loved but unlikely to solve our search. Tom and Ben Brown are aging and subject to injury. Our champion midfielders have all signed long term contracts. A small forward line is far to easily outmarked with merely one tall. So who is available to be traded in. No champion is on the horizon. But we need some marking forward to add to the potential we have.

Jessie is worth considering. GWS are in transition with a new coach. They are not expecting immediate top four but the rebuilding will be their approach. A high pick may be highly valuable for them. I say Jessie because he would add to our forward line.

We missed our chance with Peter Write last year who now has 49 goals this year.

Who else is there who is mid twenties?  If not Jessie then a Jessie like player

  10. Through the great 50's and 60's era we never had a truly great key forward, but a good spread of goal kickers. We never won a brownlow or actually polled great votes because we had too many good players that robbed each other such as Barassi  or Dixon. etc.

Team trumps stars. Although now we do have the stars now.

  11. At first sight it is in that we don't have the star power marking forward. However we are scoring 90 plus on most wins. The lack of a star forward means that their is not one person the opposition has to focus upon to cut our scoring down. Our goals are spread across  anything up to 10 players. We are a system orientated team. Yes if someone emerges who can be a major weapon, we will take him, but if not we shouldn't despair

    I didn’t see that tonight

Bowey was definitely quieter. Picked up a bit later in game when it was over. I'd bring back Rivers.

ANB remains overrated. Watch his poor skill display of thrid quarter

  13. Throughout the year we have spoken of this mantra. Despite our 10 zip success eventually we were turned upside down with a 3 zip loss. We and everyone else tried to diagnose the reason. I put it down to this mantra. Speaking of ourselves as the hunted our attitude slowly dissipated. You cannot win as the hunted. You cannot maintain the highest level of performance thinking others are out to get you, because you run and hide. You must never give up the mantle of being the hunters, but under another name. We are the DOMINATORS. That's what we did to the Lions. For our three-peat-year of 23 we will lift again to be the TERMINATORS. The four-peat year will be the DEMONATORS and dispel the curse of '58

  14. Finally our 2022 season will start. We have been flying on myth of 2021 (great final season  which did not accurately represent  the home and away season). Every season has to find its new motivation. You've got to both earn it and believe in it. We've had to much of the belief, before we have had to dig deep. There may be a few more surprises around the corner (Swans, Lions, Queens Birthday Pies) What are we capable of when injuries emerge. The month of June will be our mid season pre - finals test. Its the month we needed to have

  15. Great to see his fan base growing. His ability has been growing through the year on the back of his brilliant Kicking. Long bombs to goal, mention of his considered and composed kick to Ben Brown in last qtr of GF, but don't overlook his superb short pass to Luke J in last - exquisite. All this wasn't just in the final series. Last game of the year against Geelong had even more to it. Revisit and watch his competative marking.this guy has the package. Yes a future leader alongside the mature Rivers. A Petracca model and for we old buggers, a Barassi in time.
