Gawn and Petracca are awesome, don't get me wrong. But Oliver is totally underated by the so called epxerts. His hands and distribution are just incredible, BOG for mine
Kozzy in the guts is just a whole new level. I'm going to miss him seeing him live next week at the gabba. He's gone for 2 to 3 weeks I reckon. He's doing what he should and playing flat out to get the best contract he can with us (I hope)
Chandler - I've watched a fair bit of Casey in the last couple of years and he just tries his guts out. He's not that classy but so happy for him to finally get a real crack. Could be another Spargo for us.
Our general field play is sooooo much better, working the angles, best options and staying out of the pockets, Yuesss!
Ugle Hayden - a real plus for us. Really unrealiable.
Naughton - Hated his scragging, pushing in the back, carrying on etc. He seemed a real Joe Daniher by the end of the game and I was enjoying his general craziness by the end.
Umps - It's time the AFL considered six umpires on the field to pick up on the throwing, dropping the ball and hands in the back. How stupid is the half rule to allow forwards to push defenders in the back now? Pfft
We are becoming a seriously big super power club now, they can't ignore us as snow bunnies anymore! Go Dees!Agree with most comments. But why do you think Clarry is underrated? Which experts are you referring to? Oliver is an absolute super star. A real gem!

Moore over Clarry???!!!!???
They have to be joking. For a start, it helps if you are regularly available to play.
Hook line and sinker!

Bowey too low at 5.5.
That kid will be a rock in defence this year.
I’d be willing to grade him a 7 after that Tigers showing.
Spot on. This kid is sensational. So cool and precise. 7 at least for me as well. Also think ANB could have been higher.

Mighty hard to limit myself to just 5 having watched the demons at their peak in the fifties. I have seen so many absolute champions.
Overall
1. Ron Barassi
2. Robbie Flower
3. Clayton Oliver
4. Don Williams
5. Max Gawn
Plus another 50 who could be on this list. Petracca, Stuart Spencer, Laurie Mithen etc etc etc.

I am talking about his kicking only, re previous post. I am being persecuted for thinking he can improve his kicking 🤷🏻♂️🙄
Fair enough mate. I did think you meant his overall play. Sorry.

Not an awful kick, I think at least above average. However he lacks consistency, if he can fix that he'll be a very damaging player for the opposition.
Lacks consistency? Never plays a bad game. A true champion. Already a most damaging player in AFL and has been for years.

Accidentally posted this in the RD 1 pre game thread. Reposting it here.
Max was credited with three goals in the first half yesterday yet I swear I only saw him kick two. One in the first quarter from the goal square and another in the second from a strong mark.
I also recall Spargo kicking three for the match yet he's only credited with two.
According to the timeline on my phone app 'Footyinfo' (which is an excellent app by the way) Gawn kicked his goals at 8.16 in the first quarter and at 18.02 and 24.08 in the second Q.

Stats tell the story:
- 183 frees for in 130 games at an average of 1.41 per game for north
- 25 frees in 32 games at an average of 0.78 per game for us
He’d have 3 per game if he played for dogs!
He did pick up quite a few in the GF though. Would have bumped up his average!

I've brought this up before but would like to re-visit. For those who were lucky enough to see the great man play, which current day player did his style most resemble? If any?
I never saw him live but from all the books, stories from uncles, tidbits from folks on here, the limited tv footage I got my hands on, I get an image in my head of someone like Paddy Dangerfield. Someone who was like a fierce mountain lion released from the cage moments before the ball was bounced. Most great footballers have killer instinct and bottle but players like this took it to a new level.
Really keen to hear your comparisons and if there aren't any and he was just one of a kind, I'm happy to hear that too.
As I mentioned yesterday imo Barassi would be a composite of Petracca and Oliver. Fierce determination, never say die attitude. 'Melbourne through and through' to quote the famed Norm Smith.

Magnificent competitor never beaten. My football idol growing up. Could compete with the talls and moments later keeping up with the rovers. Those long arms!
Get tackled by Ron you knew about it. I guess today a combination of Petracca and Oliver would sum up RDB. I'm sure Ron would be so impressed by these two current, absolute champions. Of course Robbie Flower would have to be in the same company with these players. My top 4 Demons of all time. And I saw many over the years. Happy birthday Ronnie.

Well I've already ordered my 2022 women's premiership coffee mug. It can sit beside my 2021 premiership one.
Hoping MFC include at least a premiership sticker to celebrate girls great victory. Shouldn't be too hard.

Personally, I would like Josh Schacke to turn into Tom Lynch (of the Toig variety). If that was the case and JVR stuck around, our forward line future looks a lot brighter.
Failing that, I'd like Tom Sparrow to put his stamp on the game. I realise it's hard to barge into the middle when you've got Clarry, Trac and Viney in there, but I'd like to see him start making more of an impact (acknowledging he does do an important support role).
I too hope that Schacke will show the ability he must have to go as pick number 2 in the draft. Would be a true bonus.

I reckon Pick 13 will come straight in and have a strong year.
He has a lot of potential and we were lucky he slid to us at 13. We got the man we wanted in the end
My tip for breakout is our pick number 13 in the form of Kozzie. Just needs to develop consistency, but that will come I'm sure. Jake Bowey will show his followers and the selectors just how good he is.Should never have been dropped last season. Far too good to play VFL.

There’s plenty of new music that’s not as you’ve described it, Bobby. You just have to look for it.
And yeah, no one can ever take our Premiership away from us. ❤️💙
Guess I have heard too much of the [censored] they play at my local shopping centre. Quite often in the toilet too. Very appropriate.
I will look harder too WCW. Love your posts. Go demons!

My favourite is 'They can't take that away from me', with good old 'blue eyes' Frank Sinatra. I think of this song whenever I look at our 2021 Premiership pennant and photo.
Older posters will remember when the hits of the day had a meaning, audible lyrics and above all else, melody. Sad to say todays songs don't have that. Just a lot of noise with crash, crash banging with no tune. Guess we have run out of tunes and themes. Classical music is exactly the same. Rave over! But they can't take that(the premiership) away from me or you, my fellow demon supporters. Bring on 2023,24,25,26,27......

Gee, give the guy a chance. Number 2 draft pick and good enough to be selected in a team playing in an AFL grand final.
Lets see how he goes. Loved Sam W but he could be an upgrade on Sam. You don't get picked number 2 in the draft for nothing. Kicking style for goal very much like Bayley F.

Hunter is a really good get. His kicking is great which is just what we need delivering the ball to our forwards. BUT, no more bouncing the ball near the boundary and seeing it rolling out of bounds. Could be a great foil for Ed on the other wing.

After watching, like many others, the 2021 GF yet again I decided to compare other finals series since 1990 when the VFL was renamed AFL. In the 2021 finals, our mighty Demons team had a winning average of 63 points.and was only surpassed by two teams over a period of thirty two years. Essendon in 2000 had a winning average margin of 73 points, Geelong in 2007 had a winning average of 76 points. Pretty impressive I reckon and something to be proud of. Geelong, in this years finals had a winning average of 52 points by comparison. With a team not crippled by injuries I reckon we could have taken the cats but we will never know. Wasn't buddy pathetic? Next year, we will rebound if we can get those injuries sorted. Looking at the replay and the team photo, I reckon a small, tough and talented red head should have been in our finals team. Go Jake in 2023.

In years to come, when you look up the definition of "journeyman" in the dictionary, Mitch Brown's name will be there. Something like 14 years for 79 games (plus 100 VFL games, or thereabouts).
That is in no way meant to denigrate a fine footballer who tried his best. And that's all any of us can ask for.
Mitch was a great club man and used to give a few of our stars the run round at training.eg Jake Lever. All the best and so glad you finished your career with a premiership. Maybe you could play a few games with the Old Mentonians and enjoy yourself next season..

If you want to win a Brownlow don't be a defender.
All Australian Team Defenders votes in 2022
Tom Stewart 6
Steven May 0
Brayden Maynard 0
Jack Sinclair 9
Sam Taylor 1
Adam Saad 3
Key position players FB( May) and CHB ( Taylor) just 1 vote in total. Unbelievable!

1. Melbourne 94 votes
2. Geelong 92
3. Carlton 89
=4. Sydney/ Fremantle 83
=6. Gold Coast / Western Bulldogs 75
=8. Brisbane /Port 74
10. Richmond 73
11. St Kilda 72
12. Collingwood 62
=13. GWS / Adelaide 50
15. Essendon 46
16. Hawthorn 45
17. North Melbourne 31
18. West Coast 15
Collingwood's low total of just 62 is surprising and West Coast's miserable 15 must be some sort of record.

Will be interesting to see how the Buddy incident is rated? Similar body contact. Probably just a fine.
