Once again hoping robbo doesn't get up...

Travis Johnstone, what's the news on him?

  2. I think the last time a team got a bad run of injuries like we have had is when Bohden took over the Hawks. What a recruit everyone needs a secret weapon like Bohden.

Still continuing the witch hunt on Bohdan? Get real, he can't control injuries on a football field. It is simply bad luck, pure and simple.

  3. We are not really playing the kids, where is Dunn? Bode? Garland etc etc

Out of the players not in our best 22 that were played were buckley and possibly newton but he is fast become best 22, frawley was injured.

Dunn and Garland have played already this year. Not Bode though.

  4. 'Play the kids' was the cry from many on this forum when our season ended early. We ARE playing the kids and getting thrashed so now we read comments like,"shameful performances, embarassing" etc. What do people want? Every week this season we have had at least four top players out for one reason or another. What do they expect? After many touted our list as good as any other team at the start of the season some are calling our team the worst in the league with no hope for the future. They are still the same players and still have the same ability so why the gloom and doom for next year? Get off the team's back and show a bit of encouragement to the youngsters. Please be loyal true blue supporters and not whingers and moaners.

  5. NORM SMITH AN AFL LEGEND

One of the highest individual honours the game can bestow has gone to one of the MFC's true greats - the late Norm Smith.

When I was a young teenager, I managed to sneak into the Melbourne rooms at half time. The Dees were the top team playing the lowly 'shinboners' and even though the game was being played at Arden St, we were only leading by one point. Smithy was furious and he let his players know about it. I can still see seasoned players like Barassi,Mithen, Spencer, Dixon and the like reacting so positively to his fiery words. Ronald Dale was almost frothing at the mouth and couldn't get back on the ground quick enough for the second half. As a result of Norm's words of wisdom the mighty Dees extended their one point lead to ten goals to easily win the game. Yes, Norm Smith was indeed a legend of the highest order. I hope we get another one like him one day. Don't we all!

  6. Given our horrific run of injuries from DAY ONE of the season, it is comforting to see the mighty West Coast team struggling when they too, are experiencing a bad run of injuries. It just shows it can happen to ANY TEAM. The big difference was that they were lucky in that they had THE WINS ON THE BOARD before their problems started. It might cost them a top 4 spot though. I still maintain that given a decent run with injuries next season, we still have what it takes. Am I being just too optimistic? Your thoughts please?

  7. This is from my timwe watching footy (started when I was a young kid in the mid-late 80's), what my memory permits anyway

    C - Tingay B.Lovett Flower

    HF - Lyon Schwarz Robertson

    F - Farmer Neitz Jakovich

    I/C - O'Dwyer G.Lovett Yze Woewodin

A very, very good modern team Yze Magic but I could name better ones. eg The teams of 1956, 57, 59. But that's only because I'm old and can go back much further! Seriously though, your team would take some beating. I wish we had it on the field at the present time. Congratulations on your choice and research.

  8. How right you are kryton.......

    Petterd's collapse blamed on cyst

The fact that a cyst caused the collapsed lung is much better news than had it been caused by a football injury. eg crushed ribs etc, etc. This means that young Ricky will NOT LACK CONFIDENCE when he resumes playing next season. He has impressed me greatly with his football brain and his cool and creative play. Well done young man!

  9. Arrogance does not equal intelligence. A great example of a mixed metaphor; the number of cylinders that a motor has is technically independent of the choice of two or four stroke.

Thanks for the technical info Undeeniable and Champ. I will pass these facts onto the arrogant one. Can't wait to see his face!

  10. I heard this one from an arrogant Eagles fan today. Referring to the possibility of Connolly coaching the Dees next year he said, "If Connolly can't rev up an 8 cylinder motor, he has no chance with a two stroke one." Naturally, I did not concur. (About the two stroke bit of course) We have a GOOD motor but we must be able to get all of its parts together for optimum performance. Nothing against Connolly as a person, but we can do so much better with the other possibilities. I am leaning a fair bit toward Mark Williams at the present. He must be doing something right at Sandy. Anyway, I thought I'd lighten up your day.

  11. sick to death of all the bruce bagging here. he is up and down in form this year. seems to me he is playing a different role this year. sure his kicking has been ordinary to say the least but that is fixable. he is a very talented player who gives his all. this is the first time i can remember in all the years he has played that his form has dropped. It cant be easy to bust your ass every week just to have worthless unskilled players undo all his hard work.( Im talking Brown among others here.) once we get a decent list together with a solid backline and damaging midfield i see bruce moving forward to shark bags of goal ala Milne. FFS this thread is about Riley blooding young players not wanksta baying for bruces blood.

Agree 100% Red and Blue. Well spoken, you obviously have INTELLIGENCE!

  12. Just finished watching the game of the year between the Hawks and Pies, and couldn't help but feel a little jealous watching two quality, finals bound Victorian teams

    having a red hot crack.

Hawthorn full of running, and accurate in front of goal when it counted.

And the Pies, plenty of key players missing, but still ultra competetive and refusing to use it as an excuse to put in a sub standard performance.

We could learn plenty from watching these teams play.

Have you forgotten our great win over the Pies on Queens Birthday already? We'll beat them again this year too! Don't be jealous of them. Hawks maybe.

  13. Has he had his chances? He gets caned each week by bigger and faster forwards. He tries sure but he always seems to be just too late to spoil when an opponent is on the lead. eg Lloyd, Lynch etc. I do not think he is a full back. He is simply too small and slow. Should we be trying a youngster or someone else with more pace and height to see if we can tighten up in this vital area? No one ever seems to suggest that Carroll should be dropped even though he rarely appears on the best player lists. What do other people think on this one?

  14. There is just so much wrong with this post!

Firstly, he is no certainty to win the B&F.

Secondly, he never plays a bad game? He plays plenty of bad games. The last two weeks for example. On the stat sheet he never plays a bad game, but in reality, his kicking and decision making has been letting him down for a while now.

Then there is the comparison with Judd... laughable!

Also, I never suggested trading him for an unknown, I'd only trade him for a top 10 pick or an established player.

He is 27, by the time we'll challenge for a flag, he'll most likely be 30... maybe older. Capitalise on his market price now, before it drops dramatically.

And if gut running makes you untouchable, please be sure to ring Simon Godfrey and let him know.

I agree to a certain extent.

I repeat Jaded, Bruce is a CERTAINTY to win our best and fairest. He must be so far ahead already. You talk about decision making and kicking. At least he gets the bloody ball! I never ever suggested he was as good as Judd, only that Judd will be Eagles best and fairest this season. That was the comparison. Are you suggesting seriously that a top ten pick would ALWAYS produce a better player? There have been plenty of flops. Do you want Bruce to be in a stronger team and causing us much pain when he dominates AGAINST us? I'd sooner have him on my side thanks. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion even though I strongly disagree.

TJ wouldn't be top of my list either, but I wouldn't hesitate too much if the right deal came along.

The bottom line is, he won't ever reach his full potential, he is prone to bouts of laziness, and his body is hit and miss.

He is also not getting any younger.

The players I would least like to trade, are those under 23 who have shown really good signs. And I'm not just talking about the obvious ones like McLean and Rivers. I'm talking about Bartram, Bate, Sylvia, Petterd, Frawley etc... They are the future and we now need to build a team around them, not around the likes of Bruce, Green or TJ.

  15. Take out Davey and put in Jones and you're just about right.

Bruce and TJ should absolutely be put on the table. Green and Davey are not safe either.

Trading a big name player now, will get us something good. Don't wait till it's too late, the way we did with Yze.

Be tough and you might pull off another Shane Woewodin deal.

I don't care who coaches us next year, as long as they are PROACTIVE.

If they have the balls to put our big name players up on the trading table, then they will also have the balls to shake this team to the core and we will hopefully never see a repeat of tonight.

Jaded, I can't believe you and the other posters would want to trade our best and fairest player in Cameron Bruce. He is a cert to win this year's award and never plays a bad game. Dumb thinking! Imagine Eagles supporters suggesting that Judd should be traded for an UNKNOWN ,Unproved first round pick. First round picks don't always make it to the highest level. I really wish people would get off Cameron's back. He runs his guts out week after week.

  16. Bruce has to go. He's been given too many chances and I just don't care for him anymore.

What do you mean 'too many chances'? Almost every week he is our BEST player running his guts out for the team. GET REAL! Maybe delist yourself . The Eagles maybe? They keep on winning!

  17. G'day fellow Demons Supporters!

    I'm absolutely furious!

The game was that bad that I had to leave at half time!

I felt really sad about it cause its the first time I had ever done that.

My brothers were also fed up and wanted to leave.

I have no idea how the Demons can play so disgracefully after really playing well the last two weeks.

Neale Daniher's sacking is inevitable now.....

    GO DEMONS IN 2008?

    From Supreme_Demon

You are obviously not a leader! The captain doesn't leave the sinking ship. I watched it all and kept up my barracking. That's the role of a REAL SUPPORTER. We played so badly in the first half but you don't give it up even though it hurts.

  18. and here is a captain list from wikipedia...

    Captains

    * Charles Speer 1919-1920

    * Todd Viney 1998-1999

    * David Neitz 2000-Present

I have been following the Dees since 1948. I have never heard of Adrian Friskin as a player let alone as a captain. Shane McGrath was a brilliant full back and was captain in 1950.

  19. You mean Rob? There is no Bob...

    mcK.png

Many thanks Madness. Robert was his correct title, but all his adoring fans referred to him as Bob or Bobby. His son played for the Dees a couple of decades later. Not as good as his old man though. Next to Barassi he was my favourite player.

  20. I don't know that information either bobby, but I have an extract from my trusty Melbourne Listed Player Encyclopedia:

    lock.png

Madness, thanks for the info on Wally Lock. He did make the team of the century as an interchange. I have apologised to Jarka for jumping in too quickly on this one. Could you send me the info on my namesake, Bob McKenzie (!948-1955) from your MFC book. I would love to read it. Thanks mate.
