Just a phone call away from scandal...

You're probably right. To be fair, I'm sure some would be justified. Pot. Kettle. Black. -
I'm not sure most supporters were happy with the miss, but in the grand scheme of things most supporters will be happy with us getting a PP in the draft. If you see an ad for Footy Classifieds you'll see they talk about the 'controversy' of 'opinionated' personalities clashing - no doubt he's playing a role, that's what it's about (unfortunately). I heard a little of this and thought the same thing. If the AFL were so keen they would have over-ruled the committee.

I'm happy to see this happen, but only if (when?) Newton finds form at Casey in consecutive games and is kicking well.

When you initially replied to me you certainly weren't taking a balanced view - first my suggestion that Stynes may have failed to engage Coglin because he wanted to avoid escalation was 'flaccid tripe' that 'only makes sense if all benefit of the doubt was given to Stynes and none to Coglin', and then you put it alongside alternatives explanations such as swine flu. However, you did indeed suggest it was a possibility in earlier posts, as you've shown. I haven't seen anyone draw the long bow that you have re: our players and pack rapists, and with such a small audience the impact on the Club's reputation - even if we take a reasonably dim view of Stynes' comments - is questionable. Assuming that we agree the comments needed to be addressed, it is not clear that contacting the Herald Sun was the best way to achieve that. The positive angle about Melbourne and women was buried ~80% of the way down the article, and for someone who's been on a Board of a football club it should be no surprise that the angle taken was the conflict. I imagine that what the majority of readers took from the Herald Sun article was a tale of current board v previous board in-fighting, so if we assume that Coglin had good intentions - and I disagree with those who state that his actions suggest he has bad intentions and/or doesn't love the Club - I don't think he's succeeded in his aim. -
You can.

Once you're in the industry I don't believe you'd view it with anything like the childhood idolisation of your younger years. I find it odd that people can't see it that way (even if they feel they would act differently in the same circumstance).

Herald sun tomorrow...I spy more Dee trouble

Haha :D -
No worries I do agree that we could be up and about in 2012, but I think the improvement from then to 2014 will easily outweigh any losses we incur in that period (based on what we know about the age of our current list, which obviously excludes any unforseeable trades etc). I agree. For sure, me too. It's a good feeling

Are you? You certainly won't open to alternative explanations to your own initially. It's certainly not a shame. Perhaps you could respond reasonably all the time? I don't think 'flaccid tripe' is a reasonable response. If we hold that it is the case - and I haven't argued that it is or isn't, I wasn't there - I don't think it logically follows that the only option left is to call the Herald Sun. What are you talking about? Why is that? I'm not the one taking unprovoked (or provoked) pot shots at other users because they hold a different opinion to me. -

...but of course it couldn't possibly be: 5. He was hoping to avoid escalation. EDIT: Just in case anyone reads this post in isolation, I'm not arguing that #5 is the reason Stynes said nothing, I simply offered it as a reasonable alternate explanation to Hazyshadeofgrinter's conclusions (unsurprisingly, all of which paint Stynes in a negative light). -

Try reading the post again - it has nothing to do with giving the 'benefit of the doubt' to (ie. judging) either party. Whether Coglin's incandescent rage came across as abusive by some (non-existent) 'objective' measure is moot. Also note the use of 'if', since I'm not arguing my version of events is the correct one (unlike yourself). However, it's certainly not contrived to suggest one might stay silent to avoid escalation. -
Disposal efficiency - the most useless stat in footy
Rogue replied to Freak's topic in Melbourne Demons
Stats are certainly not worthless, particularly since they're more objective. However, they are often used as the premise for a conclusion that doesn't logically follow from the given stat. -
To clarify, Jarka wasn't jumping on Watts' back. Anyway, nice work on making your first post and keep them coming - particularly if you get down to Casey a bit, as it's always good to hear how the Demons players are travelling! Jarka, prepare for continued misinterpretation of your thread

I like going to the footy so I'll go when I can. However, I understand the thinking behind it - if twilight footy pulls good crowds it's unlikely to be ditched.

Try a closer reading of my comment before flying off the handle about injustice in the world I deliberately used the phrase 'if he viewed it as abusive', which doesn't require anyone else to define it as abusive. Even if there was or is some objective measure of 'abusive' that could be applied it is irrelevant, given that the only interpretation that matters in the context of Stynes' subsequent actions is Stynes' own interpretation. It's not about 'hanging' anyone, but offering a sensible explanation of why Stynes may not have engaged with Coglin at the match yet is willing to discuss the issue with him at some point. Given that Coglin admits he "was incandescent with rage" and promptly turned around and walked away after talking to Stynes, it's hardly a contrived explanation either. Regardless, your comment about the 'justice system' is moot anyway since this isn't a court, it's an internet forum - I suggest that's the wrong place to be looking for 'justice' -

Rubbish. It's a realistic assessment of where you're at when you have 40 young boys/men. I'm sure you can think of some examples not only from other codes like NRL, but the AFL and even our own Club. Clearly it's a case of differing interpretations. It would seem very surprising that Stynes would not respond unless he felt Coglin was being abusive - not engaging is the best way to ensure there's no escalation of conflict at the time. -

"I then jumped on the phone to the Herald Sun so I could splash it all over the papers", Coglin said*. >_> <_< *may not have actually said this -
I remember one match early in a season (maybe pre-season) his kicking looked good and he even dobbed a nice goal from ~50 out near the boundary, a la Neitz at his best, and I thought he'd turn the corner. I guess old habits die hard but I still think he's far better than he was a few years ago. An 'efficient' disposal doesn't mean a player took the best option and doesn't take into account what occurs after the disposal As far as I can tell, you can ignore a great option further afield and instead sell your teammates into trouble while still racking up an 'efficient' disposal. On more than one occassion his first instinct looked to be handballing the pill as opposed to simply 'best option' footy. I can think of a couple of examples off the top of my head. There was a great example in the last quarter where Martin had the ball ~30 metres from the defensive goal when he was flat-footed, striking the typical textbook handball pose, keeping the pose while moving his front leg around in search of options. It ended up in a contested situation on the northern side of the ground and we may have lost the ball a couple of handballs later (although I'm not sure on this). A similar desire to dish off by hand at all costs came in the third quarter, a little further out from the defensive 50 on the southern side of the ground. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if he's under instruction to dish off as first option, as Jerry Lundergard suggested, and is just trying to do the team thing, but he might be taking this a little far. It won't just happen because he's 'pulled the jumper on' x times. He'll get confidence from seeing a good option, taking that option and successfully executing the kick. If he neglects to kick when he should, opponents will become aware of this and he'll feel more pressure when he is forced to kick. I'm certainly not suggesting things are dire, but it's something I'll be interested to watch over the course of the season.

I agree. Many a time I can recall Green sprinting off the ground after kicking a team-lifting goal.

Good post. Based on the age breakdown we probably haven't lost much more by 2014 but our good picks from this year and the previous couple will have enough experience under their belt.
-
Even if he did incur an injury it does not mean he will miss next week, as you admitted in a later post. As others have said, I imagine Valenti will be given more opportunities if Moloney does miss.

His disposal is becoming a little bit of a worry. He seems to be developing a Miller-esque (back in the day) compulsion to handball as option a, b and c. It's probably because he thinks someone else can use the ball better, but he won't develop any confidence in his kicking if he looks to handball at every single opportunity and it will become more of an issue.
