If anyone thinks re-signing Riley was....
Supermercado replied to Leoncelli_36's topic in Melbourne Demons
His last two games have been shithouse, but it hardly leaves him isolated on our list. I prefer to remember the Essendon game when he snapped some bloke in half and the first half of the Port match where he was tackling people with violent intent. The real problem is not that we have one player who can't kick, teams can carry that, it's that we had about five playing last night. -
I thought this thread was going to speculate that we might kick 20 in a game. Fat chance.

How much of the free advertising was in Queensland/NSW? You can't count a cent of it generated in SA, WA or Victoria. Exposure in Queensland and NSW would have made up some of it I'm sure, but not surprisingly once they got rid of the charity players and started winning that's when crowds started going up. As for him winning the game off his own boot big whoop, he proved to be a competent player but plenty of hacks have won games or kicked a few goals once and never been heard of again.

I'd probably take the doping one.
-
Maybe if we trade the entire list for magic beans and need to fill spots with experienced players.

Look forward to being the only MFC fan in the ground on Saturday night other than the cheersquad.

We could get Daniel Connors, Mitch Robinson, Chris Yarran, Travis Tuck, Liam Jurrah and Ahmed Saad.

What happened to the team that beat Adelaide?

And we put in a performance fitting of one of our last two grand finals. -
Comedy aside I do worry about our players getting caught in the death spiral of failure > expectation of failure > more failure. When this question came up at one of the Neeld information night/crisis meetings in 2012 he said that they didn't need it because we had X amount of coaches and football department people that players could speak to if they had concerns. Which in retrospect is total bollocks because a) what if your problem is with the coaches, b) how many young players or fringe players under danger of the axe are going to show vulnerability going to an assistant coach and admitting they've lost the will to play and c) even if they did what's an assistant coach going to do? Not sure Mrs Roos' yogic flying lessons are going to be much help either. Clubs with psychologists: Collingwood (Psychology and Wellbeing Manager) Essendon (cunningly listed as a 'performance psychologist' so he doesn't have to counsel them about other matters) Hawthorn North Melbourne Port Adelaide (sports psychologist) Richmond Near enough to: GWS (player welfare manager) St Kilda (player welfare manager) Carlton (player development and welfare manager) Nothing: Adelaide Sydney Couldn't find a staff list for Brisbane, Fremantle, Geelong, Gold Coast, West Coast, Western Bulldogs

For anyone who gives a rats this is the law we're discussing. Interpret it as you like, the AFL certainly will. Note - there is nothing that says it has to be after your first pick and it's not set on bands like free agency compo. They can give you whatever they want. Roll on pick 20.

I'm thrilled to find out that Melbourne fans have still got capacity to be embarrassed by anything we do. Humiliation has been my default setting since Round 2 last year. Give us everything, I don't care what unwashed fans of other teams think.
-
I agree with some of their points and the idea that we've only just crawled back to the position of a terrible team rather than a complete disaster but the idea of loading up on draft picks at the expense of senior players is a bit 2009.

What are the chances Bartlett was just trying to say he wanted us to be a super successful, rich club? Good luck with that, but I think the whole Yankees thing was blown out of proportion from what was probably an off-hand comment in the middle of an article. At the moment we're embracing the Cubs and just being depressingly bad for a long time.

Assumed that's what this thread was going to be and came in for the carnage.

Ben Holland from the square in the last game at Optus Oval.

If he wants to do the government thing and blame the previous administration for everything - and he clearly does - he's gone too far back. What a ludicrous comment for the current coach to be making - he shouldn't be going near it five years later.

Funny that our culture was so destroyed by tanking that we won 17.5 games between R1 2010 and 186 with almost the exact same list that was up to their neck in the tanking. If we'd sacked Schwab at the same time as Bailey for a total clean sweep and not botched our coaching choice for 2012 nobody would be talking about 2009 now. This article is simplistic bollocks.

Melbourne , a team waiting to be beaten - Paul Roos

People think we're going to find a way to trade Rohan Bail for Rory Sloane. -
Last time he ended his season early he was next seen signing for a new team. Where's he going this time? Has probably decided that he's got enough money in the bank and he can play against a similar level in the EDFL.

Why are we letting everything skew so ridiculously in favour of players?. What else are they going to do, join the NRL? If the best players don't want to play for the hundreds of thousands of dollars they're getting now I'm sure there are plenty of others ready to step up and take their place. Any extra money or conditions should be going to the bottom ends of lists and to rookies rather than the stars. The AFLPA come out with bollocks like this and sit on their hands while hacks like Folau, Hunt and Scully are paid millions of dollars more than their worth while rookies get reasonable but by no means comfortable money. The big difference between open, pre-planned mid-season player movement in the AFL compared to the NRL is that they don't have a draft. Teams bounce from one end of the ladder to the other on a yearly basis because they can just buy 'free agents' by the dozen to supplement their junior programs.
-
As long as we make a genuine effort to avoid it instead of rolling over and die in the last few weeks I won't be distraught. Serves us right for losing so many winnable games - but at least we can go into next year with a decent platform. Having said that I can see St Kilda tanking furiously from here to ensure that they finish last.

CLUB THEME SONGS & THEIR ORIGINS by George on The Outer
Supermercado replied to Demonland's topic in Special Features
What about in The Club when Hawthorn sing "bobbing up and down like this" because nobody wanted to pay for the rights to Yankee Doodle Dandy. Meanwhile why did the Crows change from "we're the mighty Adelaide Crows" to "and we're known as the Adelaide Crows"? Some other novelty version theme songs Geelong - 1961 Geelong/St Kilda - 1980's Sydney 1980's/90's
