Melbourne midfield ranked worst in AFL by Champion Data
Dr. Gonzo replied to SaberFang's topic in Melbourne Demons
Some of the defensiveness on here is hilarious. Do people really think Champion Data rank players based solely on possessions? Pick up the Prospectus when it comes out and have a read, the game and stats are way more advanced than that. -
Thanks Guru Bob

Correct - don't think it will make much difference to the Saints St Kilda Football Club has delivered an operating profit of $150,589 for the 2016 financial year before grant funding revenue, depreciation, amortisation and interest, and an overall accounting net profit of $1,107,311 Included within the accounting net profit is Moorabbin Reserve grant funding and additional depreciation of the Seaford premises due to the expected relocation to Moorabbin. http://m.saints.com.au/news/2016-11-29/st-kilda-announces-2016-financial-result

Great result - not wanting to pour salt in the sugar bowl but I wonder how much of our profit is due to our investment in pokies machines?

Curious Old Book - 100 Years of Football - MFC
Dr. Gonzo replied to Deemented Are Go!'s topic in Melbourne Demons
I always thought the spirit of 26 referred to our 2nd flag as well as the year we went from Fuschias to Demons - however I think it was Checker who gave us that moniker which wouldn't have been until the 30s. I always sing the second verse when I sing the song to/with my kids. My wife thinks I'm a massive nerd for knowing it but I don't care haha -
Personally I would prefer a 17 game season over 18 or 19 rounds (alternating H&A each year and travelling once each year to WA, SA, NSW & QLD) but accepting the AFL won't reduce the rounds due to media commitments I would go with the following options in descending order. 1) Return matches based on prior years ladder with teams in groups of 6 (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th & 16th in group 1 etc) 2) a rolling fixture so over x years you play every team the same amount of times 3) 2 or 3 divisions (9 or 6 teams each) where you play your own division H&A and the other divisions once Option 3 is unlikely and the least preferred. For all options, particularly 1 & 2, I would have constant alternating between home and away each time you play an opponent. Therefore even if we only play Essendon for example once a season every 2nd year will be a home game. Options 1 & 2 won't result in an equal draw but it will be transparent and fair without compromising the integrity of the competition which is something you can't say about the current policy or the suggested ones.
-
That's the point though - 17 rounds is about as fair as you'll get. Ladder positions will be determined based on that. So why the need for a 5 week pre-finals round robin? Of course we all know the reason but from a competition standpoint it makes no sense. I agree the current fixturing sucks but this isn't the way to fix it.

Coll/Ess only played once this year, Coll/Carl only once in 2017. The AFL is ready to evolve past these guaranteed return games (which often don't draw all that well anyway).
-
The 17-5 split is a terrible idea and fairly close to unworkable. The afl should either base the fixture on previous years ladder with no room for manipulation, reduce to a 17 game season alternating home and away each year or have a rolling fixture. Anything else is just a bandaid solution. Personally I'd prefer a 17 game/18 round season but would settle for a 22 game season based on the prior years ladder.

Pastoral care? Dan Richardson? Isn't he head of FD?
-
Agreed.
-
It already was, under the new broadcast rights deal. There was the possibility it would be on sold by Fox to Channel 10 but that seems to have fallen through, for 2017 at least.

Plus they get the first two weeks on a Thursday, some Saturday nights as well as the ANZAC Eve game
-
What's that got to do with the Saints?
-
Saints have no blockbuster games we have Queens Bday and ANZAC Eve. I don't think we can start whinging about their Friday games.

Should we still be selling games interstate?
Dr. Gonzo replied to Gingerguitar's topic in Melbourne Demons
Except for the Swans - Melbourne basically a second home for them! 12 games in Sydney 8 in Victoria and 2 elsewhere. -
Should we still be selling games interstate?
Dr. Gonzo replied to Gingerguitar's topic in Melbourne Demons
When we start geting 45-50k members consistently and can guarantee 30k minimum to games vs interstate sides then we can think about stopping the NT games. -

Yes. -
Not really - the bye should be after our Darwin game not the Alice game. The Alice game shouldn't impact us any more than playing in Perth or Brisbane.
