  1. In the early 1980s Ron Barassi and Barry Richardson announced to the football world that the Dees were to prospect the Emerald isle for potential players .This proposal was met with a combination of amusement, sceptisism and scorn by the wider VFL (as it then was ) community .That attitude changed markedly when we in our early batch we produced 2 All Australian recruits and had possibly a 3rd in Paul Earley if he hadn't  been consumed by homesickness and returned home .The recruiting  move was a radical success. Fast forward to 2024 ,and ironic as it  seems  many clubs have Irish players,i(n some cases like Brisbane and Geelong  more than one) ,and we as the founders of the scheme  have no-one at all. .In fact it is more than 20 years since our last Irish hopefuls  Kevin Devine and Nick Walsh tried out .i acknowledge that the AFL made things difficult for us  ,which is of itself not unusual , after the Wight -Stynes recruiting coup ,by requiring us to use draft picks to recruit this untried talent. But now we can use Category B selections so this is no longer a valid excuse .What happened ? Where did it go wrong ? Why aren't  we even  in the market for these players?. Don't we have a past network of contacts to assist in the process ? Irish players are not even mentioned in men's recruiting discussions at all  although in fairness the women's team has been creditably proactive . We  just seem to just have this fascination with basketballers who are tall but not much else as  our category B rookie targets .Can you throw light on why we are no longer interested in rebooting the Irish experiment ?

  2. We went from 1964 to 1987 without playing in a final series and of course in those days there was not even a hint of assistance .WCE has been in existence for 29 years and played in 20 final series .Pretty obvious what my view is on any assistance to them .

  4. In what must be perverse first in VFL football the rover Moniz-Wakefield (who was ok ) had more hitouts than the ruckman  Farris-White (who was deplorable ).Neither Verrall nor Fullerton impressed .Schache was insipid . We are in a world of hurt if Max goes down.

  5. From the moment that Christian said he  would take no action against Maynard it was all over and from then it just became a show trial .He didn't refer it to the tribunal neither did Keane they did it jointly (when did that ever happen ?)Christian did not change his stance even after the referral .It was akin to a prosecutor stating to the jury  that it could decide the matter but as far as the prosecutor was concerned the accused was innocent . Did they even call a human movements expert to contest the evidence of Maynards expert ? .Some involved had allegiance to Collingwood and were not remotely independent . Im no fan of Keane .She sold us down the drain .

  6. The overall consequence of retaining both on the list was exacerbated by the fact that we then had to effectively give draft picks 28 and 36 to the Suns to get list space.

These picks are in the range that got us Rivers Petty Fritsch Spargo and Howes so they can be important .I accept that we moved from  pick14 to 11 and took Tholstrup , But he was a bolter and there was nothing to indicate he would'nt have been available at 14 .

I found the swap perplexing .

  7. This summary of Dees 2013 -2020 is far superior to anything I have traversed on the Footy sites or in the media. It was a herculean effort to assemble the data and  provide visuals and I thoroughly enjoyed each installment . You are to be congratulated for such an interesting and fact filled post .

Not best pleased about this.  Hertz has a very poor history in regards to ethical behavior, particularly in the way it has treated employees.  You'd think that a club that has finished Top 4 regularly and won a flag could attract someone more in line with our own values.

I have found Hertz great to deal with both here and in the U.S .Terrific service and always honour the MFC discount.

  9. Now that we have made our 2 first round selections I cannot still understand the swap of picks 14 ,27 and 35 for pick 11 and am actually further confused .We took Tholstrup with the pick 11(now 13 ) but there was nothing to indicate that any of the 3 clubs that would have otherwise been above us were interested in him .We would presumably got him with the old 14.We structured the final list after knowing that we had 2 less draft picks. We cant claim the swap assisted in trying to deal to climb further up the board because we were left after it with a diminution of  trade capital .Was there another discrete  reason for what appears to be an unusual trade .?

Pathetic trading from MFC. How does this make us better?

a future 3rd (somewhere in the late 40s ) isn't  likely  in itself to  lead to a team improvement but it will free up some salary cap space .Many here believed that Harmes 2019 extension was one year too generous and i think they were correct .Hopefully Lamb and Taylors present strategy is to free up salary cap space to make a run for an A grader late in the trade period.

In good news, Carlton are trying to get Jack Martin down to 1 week rather than cleared altogether.

Carlton is a shrewd club who would be incensed at being the second case of the  night .The club knows that there case is show trial number 2 only in this case the Tribunal will be out to slot them to save face over Maynard .Good strategy to limit the argument to reduced penalty.
