  1. This got me thinking, what was Bye like back in the early part of the 20th Century when there were only 11 clubs. I have done some research and found this team that was going around in the 1919 season B: Waxing moustache/Smoking a pipe/Visiting seaside HB: Sending telegram/Radiogram/Thrashing staff C: Playing with hoop/Penny Farthing/Fisticuffs HF: Starching/ Cod Liver oil/ Snuff F: Visiting a Speakeasy/Motorcar/Talkie 19th Man: Morphine 20th Man: Billie Hughes Interesting line up by todays standards but pretty competitive back in the day.
  2. Thanks Jordie, Great report. Bullet pointing makes for easy reading
  3. Fev is starting to remind me more and more of Paul Gascoigne the English soccer player. He had the world at his feet playing in the top leagues of Europe but couldn't keep his hand off the grog and finished his career after many unsavoury episodes including wife bashing, drunkeness and general public disorder playing in far flung parts of China. In the end he became a train wreck of a fellow who never seemed to acknowledge his weaknesses. These blokes don't have the intestinal fortitute to battle through their weaknesses and it is exascerbated by it all being played out in public.
  4. I would suggest that the perception that we have a better more capable forward line this year makes it easier for him to use the long bomb into the forward 50. It must be difficult kicking into the forward line only to see it come straight back out again as it has in years passed. I can see Beamer and Tapscott using those big kicks to put the ball deep in the forward line for Jurrah, Petterd, Chin, Watts, Aussie, Maric, Bennell and Green to raffle off for a goal.
  5. Soft hack public school players: C Judd C Brown C Rioli J Hendry P Brown T Cordner D Cordner D Cordner To name but a few through the ages - cream puffs the lot of them!
  6. Hi DA, I thought that I had responded, sorry pal. My brother is making good headway with the copying, I will let you know when he is done and you may want to do a swap meet. :)

    Cheers

  7. Hmm, I noticed that too, any insight from anyone?
  8. (The mail arrived today with a letter from the Club for my 6 year old. It is a membership renewal in the style of a fake news paper with several made up articles that have merged my son's name into the text, E.G. "Smith"(not his real name) lets the Demon Out" It describes how Jimmy has backed my son to take the club to another level etc. "People talk of the likes of Scully, Trengove, Watts and Jurrah being the future of our club but we also need to celebrate young Smith." etc. He also gets a mention in the team news alongside TMR, Chip et al as being the X Factor and even gets talked up as a potential captain by Bailey in "Captaincy Whispers". Needless to say, he is totally blown away and I had a great laugh. Every step the club takes seems to be in the right direction and these sorts of membership drives are fantastic. He can't wait for his flashing horns to arrive and I can't wait for the season to start GO DEES!!
  9. Errm, I thought that was the point of this thread
  10. News just in, Mick Malthouse has walked out on the Pies in the middle of the Irish tour to take up the position of Defensive Coach at the Dees.
  11. Hey WJ, Am I deluding myself, I could have sworn that I used to watch Glenn Honey play in the mid 70's in the reserves?
  12. Vin Catoggio - another of those blokes who looked good in a good team. I would have had my avatar's namesake over him every time!!
  13. Then I won't see you at the 2013,2014 GF
  14. I sit behind the interchange in the MFC members seats with my brother and young lad. Your post has given me a sad realization (similar to that one you have when you work out for the first time that you are too old to be drafted by the club.) At 47, my 6 year old is closer in age to you than I am.......sadly he is not quite up for a brew just yet.
  15. The boy is a gun, perhaps Matty Burgan puts it best in his China Diaries when describing Scully's attempt at basket making: "But perhaps the bamboo basket made by young-gun Tom Scully wasn’t a highlight (finally, the kid has a flaw!)"
  16. No, John Brumby runs Victoria
  17. Commentating on the Commonwealth Games for the ABC (namesake me thinks)
  18. JUst an observation, PJ had no pre-season this year, he was obviously underdone all year, maybe....just maybe a full pre-season will lift him above the very ordinary??
  19. I was tallest in my class in preps and but stopped growing at 173cm (could have been a contender) :( :( :(
  20. From an occasional poster but avid reader, thanks so much. FWIW, imo the Land is even more important during the off season for rumours and training updates. It keeps me sane
  21. Hmm, don't be so sure DD, the last 2 years we have had Green and then Flash dragging their heels during the trade week. I for one think that Tracky Daks is of value to us and should be kept. Re the link to BF I hope this one works: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=761824
  22. I hate em like the rest of us but you have to hand it to them, they keep bobbing up; at least one grand final appearance in every decade except the 40's, a fair record.
  23. could not watch it;felt too darn embarrassed
