  1. Note: that Greene had a reputation for being a sloppy kick at goal before his all Australian year. Sometimes it just takes time to get acquainted with the speed and pressure of AFL, before one's normal kicking skills are replicated in the game. Also general improvement in the team performance i.e. blocking/shepherding and providing options also has the obvious flow on effect of increasing and individuals perceived kicking skills . Ask many long suffering Hawks supporters, and if they can remember and are honest they use to bemoan S Mitchel's Kicking very early in his career.
  2. Yes agee re Tyson, while Oliver, Viney and even Jones otput was down In the first half, he kept us in it and allowed them to work tbere Into it
  3. Actually, this is a better model than the present final systems where the top 4 sides are penalised with two weeks off with in a month leading up to the grand final (thanks to the stupid bye before the finals), should they play well. It would have been so much harder for the the Bulldogs to win the premiership last year under the proposed final 10 (wildcard) setup; and so it should be - they finished 8th. The finals should at least reward the top 4 or 6 teams, not penalise them.
  4. Haven't seen this but its very similar to a model I suggested to the AFL a couple of years ago. Play 17 games (1 game against every side) then divide into groups of 6 playing another 5 games. Then teams placed 1 - 16 play off in a knockout formula for positions in the 8, with 1 v 16, 2 v15 and so on. Final 8 places are determined by the winners position entering the knockout round eg the 16th placed team can only get the 8th final spot. Home team is awarded to the highest placed team going into the game. After knockout round final 8 runs its natural course. For those arguing that its unfair that the top side can potentially get knocked out in this round, then it can be equally argued that they are not a top side to be beaten at home by a bottom side. I actally preferred a 2 division model that allowed every team to play each other first in rounds 1 -17, then each other in their div once more ( this model better caters for showdowns, derbys ans marquee games such as anzac or queens birthday). A variant of this could be a 1 -17 games, then split into 3 divisions based on capacity to fixture in marquee games eg melb, coll, ess, rich would be in the same div.
  5. I believe his dream is to play in front of a packed MCG - he's just swapped sports to achieve this goal easier. The MFC - a destination club for multiple reasons!
  6. A potential big benefit of this is midfielders such as Tyson, Brayshaw, Vanders will now being going up against opposition rotating midfielders rather than their best. While Petrecca, Harmes, ANB learn the craft with smaller stints against opposition 3rd rotations. Of course this also free's up players like Vince, Salem, Hunt and even Kent to play more outside. Oliver is an exception as I believe he's the type of player whose development is best suited to being thrust straight into the heart of the action, still having Lewis, Jones, Viney and Rockliff around him is only going increase his effectiveness .. Note: at a starting bounce you only have 3 midfielders at Gawn's feet; while around the ground you may increase this by a couple - the rest are still around the contest but there is a limit to how many are actually the ruckman's target (before it gets to congested to take a clean possession). A very good position to be in when one of Jones, Viney, Lewis and Rockliff starts outside the ruck contest.
  7. Depends on how much Brisbane wanted to move Rockliff on. If they were as desperate as some indicated and if GC are as recalcitrant as stated regarding receiving a first class midfielder then they both get what the ultimately want. This could then be sweetened in a separate deal over Hanley Note: the trades required to create a win for Brisbane, Hawks and GC don't exist so they find themselves in a position where they have to give a little bit to get their desired result. Melbourne could orchestrate a separate deal for Lewis without significant disadvantage - in essence the Dee's are being rewarded a little by being the circuit breaker for the other clubs
  8. This has the hallmarks of a classic comedy sketch where a smug, arrogant, super confident smooth talker is trying to take two hot girls (who are best friends) to dinner at the same time.Things seem to be going swimmingly despite numerous close shaves of almost getting caught out, but then one makes a lot of noise courtesy of some very expensive champagne which should have helped "seal the deal", bringing unwanted attention; noting things failing quickly here super-hunk redouble his interest in other said girl but then cannont understand why she is so upset after having witnessed what just happened with her friend - while sipping on a glass of cheap wine he supplied BYO. The next day our hero is being consoled by a dimwitted friend on the vagaries of women, wondering what he had done wrong!!!!
  9. Well considering the cards vested parties are willing to play, would something like this work: Melbourne give up Dunn and 2nd round pick to Brisbane Melbourne give up 3rd round pick to Hawthorn Brisbane give up Rockliff to Gold Coast Hawthorn give up next years first round pick to Gold Coast Hawthorn give up Lewis to Melbourne Hawthorn give up 2nd round pick to Gold Coast GC give up pick 19 or 24 to melbourne GC give up O'Meara to Hawthorn * Melbourne give Essendon next years 2nd rounder as 19/24 is to high!
  10. Perhaps we should chase Clarkson, as he can't be happy with the board meddling in his affairs!!!!
  11. Apparently the latest rumor is O'meara and Mitchell is compensation for taking Vickery!
  12. an interesting snapshot of a pub discussion on how the Hawks can land all of Vickery, O'Meara and Mitchell: Vickery is free (yet they are still likely to come out losers) O'Meara would likely be next years first round and a player (not necessarily a Hawk, e.g. Dunn could to GC, hawks give 2nd round to Melb with a possible swap of 3rd rounds) Mitchell would be two first rounds this year (Hill trade) and perhaps some late picks or swapping picks; so that the Swans can have the required points for academy selections. Note this is just speculation, without consideration of any hawthorn players being included; what it does show (with some tweaking) however that the trades can be done
  13. What the club should be doing, is seeing this as an opportunity. Hawthorn are making a bold gamble to keep their premiership clock open, without going through the downturn that the Salary Cap/Draft is designed to facilitate. Sydney has achieved this to some extent; while Geelong are trying their best. It can be done, but it does need everything to line up correctly (Other clubs such as Melbourne needs to ensure that everything lining up is very difficulty and therefore unlikely). It is accepted that the Hawks are going to very quickly lose champion players who as history has shown are not easily replaced. They are in a position to do this because importantly their champions have never been reliant on speed (therefore the loss of it won't significantly influence their output), are all essentially assistant coaches on the field, and they are taking pay cuts to keep the Dynasty going (ironically this approach also improves their income as it extends their careers a number of years, noting that if the club was in a rebuild then they would most likely be encouraged to retire). This works well when the supporting cast suits the mix - i.e for the hawks this equates to a support cast that has speed, and run n carry (Rioli, Smith, Hill, Hartung, Bruest, etc, even Gunston). Now while the Hawks are going about replacing Roughead, Mitchell, Hodge etc with Vickery, Mitchell, O'meara; other clubs should be targeting their mid tier run n carry players. This would result in the Hawks having the wrong mix, to continue in the premiership window. I beleive Melbourne should be offering nice money to someone like Hartung (I'm not a Smith fan, but can understand the appeal) which forces the Hawks to match the offer (reducing their salary cap space and ability to recruit); if they don't match it then we get a player who meets our need (and at the same time reduces their ability to negotiate a trade should if he was identified as potential trade-bait's but request a trade to a destination not of their liking). Furthermore, every run n carry player the Hawks lose requires their aging inside players to take on a role which they are losing the capability to do at the top level; or requires the replacement players to take on a role they were not recruited for. If they lost Hartung, Smith and Hill; they already look very slow! These mid tier players are get-able, for it just needs as some, possibly most will be put out by the perceived pressure of senior players taking pay cuts after being paid top dollar for most of their career, so that new players to the club can get the top dollar, not the mid-tier who deserves it. Also they are not the maryrs they are making out to be as the chances are it was a choice for some between retirement or paycut; and as noted earlier the paycut extends their earning potential while the premiership window is open. Note with Fremantle already grabbing Hill, it wouldn't take a lot to upset their team balance. Now if the Hawks put an effort into keeping these mid-tier players then they don't get the replacements they need for their aging champions. Either way, it makes it that much more harder for them to continue the Dynasty. Who else could we target.
  14. This is essentially just clever list management. 1st - as to who is he going to replace: well he obviously is seen as still having the potential to still make it in the AFL, but importanty moreso than a late draft pick (80+). 2nd - a draft pick ties the club to them for 2 years, not the 1 year we are committed to withJT 3rd - a draft pick requires more individual development (resources) which now should be focuesd on team development and finals football. We are entering a new stage of the premiership clock. He could actually contribute the other way with assisting player development 4th - if he play poorly and languishes in Casey, then unlike the late draft pick who is just as likely to struggle to make Casey 1sts, we can move him on after a year. We win. 5th - if he plays ok, but not star, then that will improve his trade value, which due to his injury history is currently next to nothing. We win. 6th - if he improves to starting 18 (which is only probably 3-6 rungs up the pecking order) then We win Also Sam Mitchell has never been quick, and does not have a deep penetrating kick, but he seems to go ok. Note, its easier to teach someone how to increase their speed and endurance, than footy smarts!
  15. Gawn will get in - not only does he deserves it, but the media love him. Viney should make the squad. TMac is a strong chance for the squad as well, whilst Jetta deserves it but there is to much competition for the small defending back (think bulldogs, crows, blues, hawks and swans) A lot will depend on how many magpie players the squeeze into the team/squad! Even our own Harry O, has been all Australian at one point.
  16. Once again we have also shown we don't handle sides that apply strong tackling pressure. Our instant handballing to anything red n blue, is very predictable and allows for cherry picking, in fact it encourages high tackle counts against us
  17. Jetta - I honestly gave up hope when he got injured Tmac Omac Hunt Ptrac Vberg Despite the possession count no midfielder deserves votes
  18. Yes, Wet weather footy is actually pretty simple. Numbers to a contest and kick it long. Repeat. Extra man behind play doesn't suit this from either perspective. Behind play requires handballs or short kicks to gain an advatage, but in the wet the benefit of this is negated through the slippery conditions. While in the foward line, well we could all see what happens - to beat tbe extra man requires precision again something harder to do in these conditions. Stupid, dumb, stuborn coaching. And the selections Well thats another rant begging to happen
  19. Are we tanking? For only a fool keeps making the same mistakes and expect the outcome to change. The loose man was not working!!!
  20. Overh Heard Jack Steele is going to Richmond ( was at a function at his Junior football club ) now this could just be speculation, though the source are people who would Have some insight.
