I was joking. Hence the :>)
-
Could have been a cunning plan by a loyal player to lower his value so that no one would offer enough for him to leave... :>)
-
So the press think there is no hard evidence to sink Essendon players. If so, it may come down to what Dank says and can backup when ASADA interviews him under the new laws. Seems there are 3 things he could do: 1. state he injected players with totally legal pure spring water or whatever 2. drop them in it 3, refuse to answer on the ground of self-incrimination (eg. fraud against players or even assault). Does anyone know if ASADA's powers include IPCC-like ones, namely tell the truth but what you say can't be used in a criminal proceedings against you?
-
Sure, but you have things out of order. If Roos is appointed coach he will doubtless say he has the 'fire'; why does he need to convince us of that now (given we have no real say in who is appointed)? Will crowds be lower because some supporters don't believe the new coach has the fire? I think not - improvements and WINS will be what draws the crowds.
-
That may well be the only knock, but I don't think he needs to convince us supporters he has the fire to get the job. We aren't involved. Sure we may well like to see 'fire' but it doesn't matter much to those calling the shots how we feel. Does anyone think that if he gets the job he won't express how passionate he is about it? Will any member call him a liar at that point and push for someone else to coach? We'll just cross our fingers and hope he means it.
-
Unusual for me to look at things negatively, but he doesn't need to convince members of his position, just the AFL (and 'our' board). So why would he do that by an open letter rather than private talks?
-
Oh dear, never grumble about grammatical errors or you'll make one yourself. I know from experience. Amount=> Number.
-
I'll join the tea-leaf reading posters and point out that the only use of the perpendicular pronoun (I for "yes minister' unaware) was in: "That being the case I would look to trade either Pick 1 or 3 for the best midfielders available." A slip revealing his personal involvement/intention or just a turn of phrase?
-
Some people are reading a lot into a headline. But why does anyone expect any loyalty to a club from players these days? Now that it is all a business to everyone but us supporters, you'll get loyalty in odd cases (eg. an injury-prone player whom the club doesn't give up on), and maybe some from father-son types. But the only other loyalty that you'll get is when a group of players see the wider group as successful, and want to stay part of that. Clearly we are a way off that happy situation at present.

sounds good to me

Maybe I've not been following this closely enough, but I don't see that as proof of innocence. Innocent until proven etc of course, but there are lots of scenarios where someone (the spiller) spills the beans without personally initiating the contact with the spillee. (Fred Dagg where are you.) Whatever the truth, it is still a remarkable coincidence about the timing of the Essendon and ASADA press conferences.
-
I doubt if anyone here believes all they read in the papers. As several people have pointed out, you don't have to rely on what's in the press to suspect that something rotten has gone on here. Did anyone ever think it was merely a coincidence that the Essendon press conference was held just before ASADA's? If you did or still do, then the published direct quotes (which are not claimed to be out of context) would cause you to re-think without any influence by the usual beat-up reporting. That said, I did enjoy the typical and shameless C Wilson tactic where she uses the word 'caught' in: AFL commissioner and lifelong Bombers fan Bill Kelty was caught visiting Hird several months ago when the spotlight had turned to the Essendon coach.
-
I think you are right. "Begging the question" meant "beggars the question", i.e. makes the question a beggar and thereby making it a worthless question to pursue. I wonder if 'beggars' above should begin with an uppercase 'B'. A comma after i.e.? ..................
-
I'm with you on Hird. But it didn't need the AD & Evans vs. Hird & Robson barney for me to assume that AD did tip them off one way or another. As I posted elsewhere it is possible AD didn't explicitly tip off Essendon during the conversation in dispute. But given Essendon was the team that was under general suspicion at the time, any indication that ASADA was on the warpath would be a tip off, especially if Essendon was the only club contacted! I don't think I am the only person who assumed there had been a tip off when within a few days after the Essendon media event ASADA did theirs. AD has not denied he had a briefing - he just says they didn't tell me which club. But blind Freddy within AFL circles knew Essendon was under general suspicion.
-
Perhaps not. But that should not be a consideration in the wider interests of AFL. Sadly.
-
You may well be right that the next CEO might be worse for MFC than AD. And he may well be great for the AFL generally. And Essendon and the MFC may have been run by fools. I'm not going to argue any of that, but I'm surprised you defend him on this. Surely he has made a mistake here regardless of how well you think he has done his job otherwise.
-
Even it it doesn't 'totally erupt' in public, it may well be a blunder. Even without Hird or anyone saying things now, if AD breached confidence then you'd think ASADA would have already been [censored] off with him for the last few months. And that may well affect how they view any defences the AFL puts up in support of Essendon. Did Essendon gain enough by going first to outweigh this risk? I think not.
-
Regardless of whether it is sinister or not, unless ASADA etc were pre-warned and happy for Essendon to go first with their press conference (unlikely), it is a political blunder for AD to prompt Essendon to call that press conference. It would have been just as effective for Essendon to issue a press release immediately after the ASADA/govt announcement, without the downside of pissing ASADA off.
-
Not sinister. But if you are told something in confidence and you blab it to anyone, especially a concerned party, your integrity and trust in you heads south. And surely that is something that could affect the final washup.
-
I haven't followed all this in detail, but AD defence seems to be in this quote in the Hun: "And I did not for one simple reason: I didn’t know who the club in question was. The AFL wasn't aware of who the club was in question because the ACC, who briefed us a few days earlier on the Thursday, wouldn't disclose to us who the clubs involved were." So did AD call ALL AFL clubs that night to warn them that a club was about to be investigated, he just didn't know which one? If not, it is clear that he was tipping Essendon off even if he didn't actually say 'they are after you guys'. Especially as it seems a lot of questions were already being asked by journos about Essendon. If that is his best defence then he'd better throw in the towel.
-
Sadly for us pedants, words and phrases change meaning over time. It is a long time since 'beg the question' meant 'beggars the question'.

The AFL has missed its chance in Canberra. They should have done something years ago when a large fraction of the population were ex-Melbourne exiles and AFL was quite popular. But by doing nothing while the Rugby types set up the successful Raiders and then the Brumbies, these are now seen as the local teams and code to support. (Also the population is now about the same as Tassie, so too small. At least in Tassie 100% want AFL, in Canberra it is an unknown number and likely to be around 30% of that if you do no more than just divide up the 3 codes (plus soccer...) which is probably generous.

If I was a parent of a player who was given something where the effect on humans was unknown I'd be hopping mad. And unless my son was a player paid at the 'elite' level, eg a fringe player on the verge of delisting, I'd be telling my son to secure his financial future by suing the pants off Essendon. beauty treatment for better media performances perhaps. It seems to me that what we are currently seeing is an attempt by the AFL to get the players let off and have the team play in finals. And then clobber Essendon with fines and take a few scalps for bringing the game into disrepute. The AFL will be very happy with that outcome. Whether they will get it or not remains to be seen.

Amusing that no-one has noted whether Roos touched his ear etc when speaking. I'm not sure why Roos has such a high reputation - perhaps he deserves it. I have no way of knowing who is a better coach. But all things being equal, I'd prefer a coach that has the team play like Geelong does and wins a premiership than the way Sydney played and won in the past. Of course I'd prefer Sydney-style to not winning a premiership.
