SEN pull apart Ozzie a.k.a Oscar McDonald
Dappa Dan replied to Dappa Dan's topic in Melbourne Demons
Seriously? Who the hell else would it be when discussing turnovers. Ozzie Ostrich? lol -
Really interesting stats by the SEN boys about turnovers. They're borrowing the NFL term "giveaways" and "takeaways"... Giveaways = blatant turnovers, like kicking it to opposition. Takeaways = when you kick it to a contest and the opposition win it. Ox asks punters to offer the player at their club that's the biggest culprit, and offers up Ozzie as his club's main villain. And the stat? Ozzie has had 3 turnovers all year. But all three were giveaways. Interesting. Or at least I thought so... (Merge with ozzie thread if required, mods)

If you're of the opinion we need a ruck/forward type... then yes... He's ideal. If you're not of that opnion, it's a no. I think when all's said and done he would be a massive amount of salary cap space, so meh. I think we'll more than likely look at a Peter Wright type with one of our earlier picks in coming drafts. I don't see Watts as a full time KP forward in the way Weed and Hogan are... so a Wright type would be ideal. Personal opinion. Kreuzer would be good for that. Doubt he'd want to be second fiddle to Gawn int he ruck though.
-
Yup. Another aspect. If you HAVE to have Max miss 8-12 weeks, then the time is now. Our draw up to the bye is way easier than after the bye. Also, I trust spencer as a starting ruck playing 80% game time in the guts. No problem there for me. It's only when he's the second ruck resting forward that I think he's a liability. And to continue your point, we have the deepest injury list going round right now with heaps of starting 22 out. After a massively lucky season last year for injury, I'm thrilled we still put together 30 scoring shots against a definite top 4 side. I choose to see this as glass half full.
-
Spencer to come out in the media and say he wants to be AA ruckman in 2017. Shocks the league and gets there. Then we trade him to Freo with our 1st rounder for Fyfe. Everyone wins.

In: Spencer, Pedo, Frost (fit?), Bugg or Brayshaw Out: Gawn, Weed, Smith, Melksham We're blessed that the drop off from Gawn to Spencer won't be as great as it could be. Two seasons ago he was startlingly good when he filled in. Will get hitouts, and a bunch of handballs and tackles... Won't get votes and take clunkers, but still... I think this time next week people here will be very relieved he's still on the list. It's a shame... He HAS to play a full game in the ruck to be worthwhile. I wouldn't want him selected as a backup, and neither does Goody. Frost straight to defence and rebound, freeing up Tmac and Omac who are doing as well as can be expected. Weed and Smith out means Watts and Pedo inside fifty. Pedo to play in the ruck freeing up Watts as a rebounding HB when Freo get on a roll. Bugg is a beauty I reckon. Capable of huge games and can play anywhere on the ground. Brayshaw probably more likely. Wagner also a fit if he can go. Tyson hate is laughable. Starred last week. They can't all be 3 votes... Harmes hate likewise silly. ANB I reckon slaughtered the ball at times, but was industrious, so he plays again. Melksham choice will make people laugh, and that's ok. He'll get picked, but personally, I really don't like him. He brings a bit of maturity, and lord knows Goody loves him. But I just don't think he brings things to the table that opposition clubs worry about or have to deal with. Ok but not spectacular kick. Ok but not spectacular skill. Ok but not spectacular decision making. Isn't a shut down player either. If Hibberd were 100%, I play him over Melksham. He does all the same stuff, and can play taller. Likewise Bugg. And probably Wagner after a year or two of solid footy. People really smashing Hannah here. Partly understandable, but I'd be fine giving him another week or two. I didn't think he was that bad. Keeps going for hangers, which in the absence of Hogan, at least brings the ball to ground. Weed is fine as a second or third forward, but leading the charge he's just too green. Opposition licking their lips when he lines up. Only got two tricks that are easy to nullify for most teams #1 KP defender, so he has to go. Smith, same thing. Not really an AFL player going by what I saw. Reminds me of 426.... (anyone? anyone?) Didn't do what he was selected to do which is be a poor man's Hogan. This is a massive danger game. Gawn, Hogan and Lewis... They won't be able to believe their luck. Freo are flying after they beat the dogs, and will feel they can smash anyone.

Hogan out can hang his head in shame today. Not only would he have kicked 6 against them, but the entire team would have been straightened up. The umpires didn't help, and the Gawn injury really hurt us... but Hogan was the biggest out by far. Already that important to us.
-
What about first rounder this year and next. That would be enough to get it done you'd think, even with us considered likely to be later in the first round this year and next. What do demonlanders think of that though?
-
lol
-
He's fair dinkum exactly what we need. First rounder and a player.

Interesting. My memory of Flash was that after that he had one good year playing as a winger and HB, and players took to him week in week out, and every time, it curbed his influence. Just cos it affected him doesn't mean it will affect Jesse. Hell, it might even spur him on and make him a better player. After all, some guys love pressure. I think on balance, it's more likely to be a hinderance. You have to assume players like Watts, Petracca, Viney, Jones... all get their fair share of sledging. And these incidents don't happen.

Davey all over again.

Hogan one week. That's how they're treating head contact. Lewis I can't see enough. If they find a different angle and you see a clear pure shot to the head, same thing. But seems to me it wasn't that from an early look.

Thanks for all the info. You'll find though, anyone that comes on here is well and truly up to date on all of the above. I reckon most of us have watched the game a few times. I've had it on 6 times. I saw Watts play. I think he was in the worst 6 in the squad on the day, and had Spencer played I don't think he would have. I'm not a massive Watts fan, but I'm not a hater either, I just like to go on matchups. Kreuzer for example looked like a new man on the weekend, and with Maxie's wrist and back, it's possible Spencer comes in. It might be Spencer in for Smith and Tyson for Bernie... Not like for like, but horses for courses. But if they decide they need Tyson and Bugg in to move the ball, then I for one won't be too worried if Jack takes a seat for Spence. All I'm saying is, Watts out is something I'm increasingly ok with. Especially in light of what were, frankly, some selection surprises last week that all paid off (ANB and Hannan as defensive forwards). In Goody I trust.

Asked and answered. TMac was roundly lambasted his first 50 games. So was Gawn in his first few. Glass half empty supporters saw both guys' mistakes only, and missed the positives. Glass half full supporters saw TMac take on the game, his pace and awesome spoiling 1 on 1. With Gawn his desperation, contested marking and surprisingly good work below his knees. Go forward a few years, and they're awesome players. Still with the same strengths and weaknesses. Doesn't stop the nay sayers whining about TMac of course. Just ignore them. Everyone else does.

I might be one of the only ones, but I thought Bugg played well in JLT and was unlucky to miss out. Not sure Goody loves him, but he'd fill much of the hole Smith has left. If not him, Wagner or Frost if fit... and TBH, Tyson has to play, so someone might be unlucky and miss. Say a Weed, Watts type

TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 1
Dappa Dan replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yeah what I saw in JLT was that. Speed is the first thing you see. -
Might have had a sneaky glass or 12. If they had a sarcasm font on here, might have made more sense. McDonald disposal grumblings are all fine. But there's a handful who regularly say they want them out of the team. Traded, delisted, just out... Unrealistic types who think every KP defender should be Rance. Not a lot of pragmatism on the old 'land.

TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 1
Dappa Dan replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Holy smokes. Goody off to an explosive start. lol Hannan some pace over Tyson probably a good intention... but Saints would be laughing. -
Garland and now Hibberd. All the McDonald haters should be relieved.

Unbelievable. Tomahawk is a terrible, Vickery, Tom Boyd like footballer. All three aren't even as good as Jesse is now. But because Tomahawk kicked a few goals in a final or two Brownie feels he owes him a mention. I bet opposition teams, coaches and fans would be pleased to see Hawkins against them... whereas Jesse I think makes you a bit concerned on what to do with matchups. I think in years to come it'll be Lynch and Hogan duking it out, with pies fans confused why Moore isn't mentioned with them... Next rung down a whole bunch of Daniher, Cameron types. TBH though I think even Jesse and Lynch will, before too long, be overshadowed somewhat by the unbelievable small forwards coming through. Heeney type ones, and any one of about 6 GWS players.

Melbourne 2017 ladder prediction
Dappa Dan replied to Delusional demon 82's topic in Melbourne Demons
Pretty mjuch that. I have us 9th. -
You'll cop it for expecting Saints to smash us, but I have to say I agree somewhat. I'll be tipping Saints, but not with massive confidence. The big thing was the rebounding from defense, especially after turnovers. We attack so ferociously, but are still learning to go back the other way. The one big thing we have in our favour is that Goody is an unknown quantity in the AFL. JLT be damned, he should bring a few new things to the game in two weeks. The Saints won't, they're in form and everyone knows what they're doing. On form, talent, maturity alone they win. But we have weapons too. They haven't got a Hogan killer anymore than we have a Riewoldt/Bruce killer. So plenty of hope. Just not a lot of confidence.

Was one of the first plays of the game. Our Hoges was super keen, strafing the ball up in the centre, ran straight into the umpire and I think he flew about 5 feet. Hogan got straight up, never taking his eye off the ball at any point. I think he just assumed it was a player he'd run over. Was like a mack truck hitting a mini.

What was I thinking, even mentioning the word.
