Liam Jurrah: charged, on bail and discussion closed for now
Dappa Dan replied to dee-luded's topic in Melbourne Demons
Agreed... Had a convo with my housemate, which went down the predictable "the law is the law" route... I'm anti-violence like everyone, but that's why we have a judicial system and courts, and most importantly juries... to humanise the coldness of law. A REASONABLE person would see there's nothing about the last 3-4 years of Liam's life that's been easy, or simple. Particularly the last 48 hours. As for MFC, the club is really between a rock and a hard place... It's one thing to send delegates up north to try to pick up indigenous Aussies to better the club and team... Everyone at the club, including the current players, would applaud this. So when something goes wrong, what happens? Do we circle the wagons and protect one of our own? Are we decried for "protceting an investement?" Then there's the wider implications... we know how cutthroat the industry is, and many a team has stuck by a project player only to have them leave after a year or two on the list where they proved nothing. It's the noble thing to do, to fly people up there to make sure he's ok and get him to Melbourne where he's been ordered to go, then surround him with friends and loved ones to distract the media frenzy... but what's teh implications there? Will there be resentment from team-mates who have had a tough time but WEREN'T shown the same degree of above-and-beyond care? Maybe they wouldn't hold it against the club or Liam, since they were only doing the right thing, but they could easily become disenchanted with the club if it cost them their spot in the 22, or on the list. Likewise, if the situation legally is dire... what happens then? Does the club cast him off? Does he pull a Krakeour? It's times like this where knowitalls on demonland really come into their own. Everyone has an opinion, and expresses it emotionally, and never with any degree of temperance. All too quick to get stuck into the board or footy department or whoever because the situation didn't work out ideally... When really, there IS no easy way to handle this. There's gonna be a hard way, or a REEEEALLY hard way. The whole thing is just horribly, horribly sad. -
Oh woooow... Everyone click the "matchup" button... Looks like the site manager took JA's advice (I think) and has put up the "projected" stats for the week based on averages. How good is that?!!! And an odds column!!! HA! This is WICKED!!! Question though JA... I must have missed a category scoring post here... It says on projected stats that SnomeD's and my game will be a 7-7 draw. How is that possible? Is score AND score percentage only 1 point each? I thought it was ONLY accuracy.
-
Oh, also JA.... Is the current schedule accurate for the year? I'd like to know my first week opponent.
-
Robbo... My biggest fault, and I think I'm gonna be guilty of this all year, is I forget it's a keeper league... With that in mind, I'm gonna HAVE to take jumpin' jack off the table. I think he and Redden might be my only CERTAIN keepers. Van Berlo another... I'll be in touch in a round or two.

I was thinking Richmond for some reason. But yeah... that's right. And not exactly the same thing... in that case he was guilty. Anywho... moot point until more facts come out. -

For my part DL7, I prefer to go with the idea that I just don't know. This culture exists within our borders, and yet I could spend the rest of my life studying that culture and still not fully understand it. I think it's fair to be annoyed about this... but laying blame on him, I can't get there with the facts we have, even with this thing of him being in Alice instead of further north. I can't apply my values to him. -

Yeah, true... Though I'd be interested to see if any kind of arrest record, even a short term one, has led to sponsors pulling out in the past. From memort there was a TAC one that pulled out years ago... but I can't remember the circumstances. Callous as it may be to say this, it can work out in their favour to stick with him through this. -

I don't. I take it on a case by case basis. If someone's being racist AND humorous, then sure, have a holiday from land. But humour can be helpful... just a question of taste. Just on this... Has anyone else had the thought occur to them that if anyone gave me that image of LJ with a deadly weapon in hand, I flat out wouldn't believe them. He's never struck me, on field or in interviews, as the least bit violent. Now I'm not saying I know him, or that what we see is relevant... but given that from what we see he either broke it up, or was the offender.... which scenario rings true? I can see him being there becase it's his duty as an elder... but this degree of violence? It just doesn't compute... I'll be shocked if the news is the worst case that we're all fearing. -

Yeah, I think just as am observer, and more of a dees fan than a Jurrah fan... My concern is that even if there's nothing in it or Liam, that he maybe disarmed the offender or whatever... That doesn't mean everything's hunky dory. How much would that mess with your head? His body's not been tremendous this off season, and I reckon if something like this happened to me one of two things woul happen... I'd either be written off as a work/teammate, or I would bury my head in training and work as a kind of therapy... Regardless of the judicial system in this one, the poor kid's head is gonna like scrambled eggs... and who could blame him. Which is bad for MFC. -
Worst day fo my demon following life. Only multiple flags with many of the younger players on the list that were there that day and turned it into the reason to succeed will make up for it.
-
The Dappas like to sneak up on the comp... prefer to be underrated.
-
That was Jackattack from memory. He was inconsolable for about a week. Claimed he wasnt taking demonland seriously after that... still made finals though. On who? I don't like that atually. I think trading should be limited, signing should be unrestricted til we start. Yeah. Not sure about this... I think it adds a little something, sure, but it could be cause for angst as the season unfolds. I'd hate ot see close games decided on it.
-
Little bit of Wonna to this.
-
Wait a tic. I think you're allowed to sign/delist as much as you like before round 1. At least that's how it was last year. It's just that waivers still apply... Do I have that right?
-
Yeah that's weird. The waiver things was in effect last year... Maybe when you signed him you didn't check your list again for a couple of days, by which time noone had claimed him... and he was then a part of your list...
-
Okey doke. What do you need though? I know, right? I went into this year seeing probably 10 decent starting ruckmen... Cox and Sandi up the top end, all the way down to Jamar, Macintosh, Leuie, Warnock, Kreuzer, Ryder etc etc... I thought for sure I'd get something middle of the road around 100-150... but they were ALL gone, and Macintish was the only one left. Picking twice in quick succession is all well and good, but you have to wait 34 picks til you get your go, and if you have a player you want, the chance SOMEONE else in there will want them earlier is that much greater. So you're saying pre-ranked is bad? Did it auto pick for you? Yeah... I find the pre-ranked helps, but only if you can select yourself as you go with the list in there. I had players ranked highly, but I overlooked them because of needs... Which McVeigh? I'm interested in Monty... But I dunno if I have anything you'd want.
-
Oh man... Having the last pick sucks. Don't ever ask for it. That's my advice. Redden and Mitchell in the midfield, with hanneberry, Gysberts and McKenzie as only solid B graders in my starting lineup... Some issues with durability there. I don't even think Gys will be in our starting 22 at the start of the year. Backs I get on early, got Van Berlo and Scott Selwood. But then fumbled and bumbled to Farren Ray (born again Fiora) and Guerra... again B graders in my starting lineup. Forward line is Jack Riewoldt (is he still in one piece?), Leigh Adams (who?), Tyrone Vickery who's a ruckman moreso and Jack Darling as again, more B graders with wobbly A graders. Ruckmen I failed on miserably... Missed Macintosh who I had earmarked the whole draft. Ended up with Ivan Maric as a starting ruck, and Ayce Cordy as backup... yikes. Very weak. And to make matters worse I thought Patton wasn't out all year, but now I see he probably is. A good keeper player, but jeez, won't get anything out of him this year... Or for the next three years... Probably will move him on early this year. VERY poor drafting from last year's grand finalist. Open to trading all and sundry.
-
Got it. Had ot click on the league page... Here we go!!!!!... ... ... Oh. I have 17 minutes til my first pick. Might go make some tea.
-
The draft program isn't up and running. Does it actually start at 7:30? Or is that just when you're able to log in?

Not the greatest game ever.... but by gee positives everywhere, and only a handful of negatives... Everyone here has raved about Jones, Magner, Couch, Petterd, Stef etc etc... And had a go at Watts and Bennell, fairly (both shouldn't play round 1), and Macdonald... who I thought did everything right except execute. Apart from that, there were a lot of players who weren't at their peak, who you know will get there, like Nicho and Bail... players you can put an amount of trust in. Biggest thing though, and I reckon just about everyone will agree, we had some sort of gameplan. Keeping any side to that total, let alone the pies (albeit not trying and missing most players at the end when we won it) is tremendous. Defensively we're a presence, we have the players, led ably by Garland and Chip... and with that in mind, and a massively diverse forward line, there's cause for genuine optimism... Mostly... I just loved that we were looking for targets. We're not a hghly skilled team, but we're building in this regard. You could see the confidence build, and players start backing themselves. It's only NAB cup, but I feel like that'll rope in a number of supporters who might have been entirely ho hum about this year up til now.

Or you could stop whining and buy a mac...

I saw Adrian Anderson saying on 360 that we get some huge amount fo inclusions at half time if we want them. Did I hear that right?
-
Oh PLEASE do pick him...
