Hard game, we looked cooked and it was one of those nights where I reckon any team would have beaten us.  Lions are good, but we aren't that bad really.

Tmac I thought was great, liked Windsor too and I thought Kolt was decent enough for another showing it was just a shocker of a night all round.  Max was great too but it just wasn't happening last night.

Glad we have the bye and hopefully McAdam can come in soon and inject a bit of something something into that forward line.  Midfield was very underwhelming, even when we got the ball out of there and it looked like we were off it got stopped dead.  They just had an answer for everything last night, was just one of those nights unfortunately.  We will bounce back after a good rest...I hope.

Sorry, but Max was not “great”

He may have had 51 hit outs - but a large chunk of percentage of these were either straight to or sharked by a Lions player. There was more movement and positive signs from him in the last quarter. But the game was over at 3/4 time. And Lions has already put the cue in the rack.

The game was mostly an aberration for us. Clear from after the Adelaide game we were shagged out. We will be better after the bye but long term resilience is a worrying issue as demonstrated by the past two finals campaigns and this early hiccup does not inspire confidence.

We had an extra day on Brisbane. An 8 day break. We weren’t shagged. We were fresh if anything at all.

The pathetic excuses being rolled out by many are intolerable, insipid just like the display last night in perfect conditions.

The average AFL player gets paid over $400K.

The average AFLW player gets paid $46K.

If we won the McLelland Trophy, the $500K player allocation, shared between our 75 men and women players would equate to $6.66K each. This equates to a 14% salary bonus for the ladies, and less than a 2% bonus for the men (hardly chump change for the majority).

It would therefore be a very nice gesture from the men (except perhaps for the rookies etc) if they donated their share to the ladies. This would equate to about $16k bonus for each lady, which would be significant not only in value but also in terms of how the Club values the ladies and their performance this year.

Agree would be a significant gesture and recognition of a great team the women have who could go back-to-back. A nice little bonus.

No question about it. The Melbourne Football Club is the best, most successful club in Australia right now. The media questioning of the club’s  “culture “  is complete [censored].

You don’t have to be Einstein to work out there are indeed culture issues off field. Which is why they are rightly or wrongly questioning it.

More good news for the club.

Any journos perusing Demonland for a good news story, please note, winning the McClelland trophy for best men's and women's football program can be added to an impressive list of positives from the last 3 years, a period where we:

    • have won three flags
    • are even money favorite to win our fourth flag in a few weeks
    • finished top 4 in the men's and women comp every season
    • made finals in every VFL season
    • (despite this success) go into the upcoming draft with a brilliant draft hand for any team, let alone a top 4 team
    • have a united board
    • a CEO (who had his critics when he came to the dees) doing a top job
    • have stabilized financially
    • thankfully no longer have to rely on income from pokies
    • got to 70k plus members (an all time record)
    • continued to strengthen the women's program
    • have been able to keep the women's team together (very much unlike other top teams)
    • are on the way to creating the best, most successful program in AFLW history
    • did a thorough review of our 2022 season and made changes as a result
    • resigned our men's and women's coach
    • made a series of long term, contract extensions to key players
    • resigned Koz, a terrific message that out club is considered culturally safe by Aboriginal players (reinforced by McAdam nominating the dees)
    • been leaders in the Aboriginal cultural space - for example the Indigenous jumpers and Narrm initiative that other clubs are now getting on board with (eg renaming their team for Indigenous round)
    • not unrelated to the above two points, bedded down our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan
    • managed the departure of Jackson in a way that means we now have a great draft hand
    • managed the  transition of Burgess to Griffith super well
    • managed the situation with Jonsey not getting a game in the GF super well
    • resigned Melk when we we could have easily said see ya
    • have done a great job connecting with past players and bringing them back into the fold
    • had an assistant coach win one of the most coveted jobs in footy - tiger's senior coach

Yes, like every other club we have had our share of isolated incidents but by any measure that is a super impressive list of achievements, albeit missing one key thing - a home base.

We are in better shape now that than at any other point in the 45 plus years i have ardently followed the mighty dees.

    Go redlegs.

    Good list.
Where is the club at with our home base?
Training base at Casey. Occasionally train at Goschs. Offices in AAMI. Demon Shop at the G. How much work is being done here? And how much progress.
A home base with everyone together would strengthen the club. #strongertogether

You are definitely having a laugh.

No, not really. I’m trying to analyze what Lamb stated - that we could look to improve picks a little. And part of that is helping clubs what they might want.
4,5 & 6 not a lot of difference, still going to get a quality player.
But these clubs have a massive drop off for their next pick.

Would they consider moving up several spots for their next pick and fall back one on their first?

  5. Dogs and Hawks - Not sure where they sit on their draft choices but wondering if they’d be interested in improving their 2nd picks.
we could offer 6,42 to improve to pick 4 (Hawks) or pick 5 (Dogs).
Dogs might be interested - by improving their 2nd pick 6 places (pick 48). Hawks probably won’t want to budge with their 2nd (44). But they also have 47,49. They could be interested in an upgrade to 42.

4 & 11 or 5 & 11 could be seen as more attractive (with F1) to West Coast and could ensure Curtin for them in exchange for pick 1.

No West Indies because they got knocked out by the mighty DUTCH who today beat South Africa by 38 runs, doing everyone else in the tournament a massive favour!!!!

The Dutch knocking off South Africa opens the door.
New Zealand always seem to start off tournaments on a flyer. Only to wilt near the death (end).
Australia meet Pakistan 🇵🇰 tomorrow night and that should be a massive match. Lose and Australia will be on the ropes. Win and they’re very much alive.

  7. Watching Tim Lamb handle a couple of pressers, his demeanor, his no nonsense attitude and air of confidence - he has left an impression on me.

I think we have the perfect bloke in charge of wheeling and dealing at this point and if we are looking to move our picks up the board further to entice West Coast to do a double take (encourage interest) on splitting pick one - we have the right bloke IMO.

    Mr.Lamb “let’s make a splash.”

    6 and 11 for 3 and 18

3 and future 1st for 1 and future second

I like this type of thinking.

North and us I think are the main options for the Eagles. Perhaps North will take a look at this ^ with much interest.

He also said in a seperate segment that he currently has the first 6 picks as follows:

    1 - Reid

    2 - McKercher

    3 - Duursma

    4 - Watson

    5 - Sanders

    6 - Curtin

Went on to say that is why he thinks we’re a chance of pulling off a play for Reid - i.e. that Curtin would be available at our pick

Of course noting all of this is subject to change as clubs get a better idea of which club will take which player at their respective picks

Hawks have 4, Dogs have 5.
Either could easily offer their pick and a Future. Which is why I believe the above strategy with North would checkmate Nth Dogs and Hawks possible bids.

    %#£€ !

Planets just had to align, game of golf, nine news there. How convenient. Crows trying to squeeze much!?

Evident he wants to return to Adelaide.

As he stated, the decision has been made (tow the company line), Happy to play at Melbourne next year.

Definitely will get tongues wagging again tomorrow before deadline. But I expect nothing to change tomorrow. Because… “the decision has been made”

It won’t stop the Crows from a last ditch bid.

And now we're staring down the barrel at another loss

Batting first Sri Lanka 1-156 off 26 overs

    There’s a pulse. Now 3/166 off 28.
They wasted a review on the first ball of the match. The bowling has been wayward and they’ve looked flat. Starc inconsistent, Zampa hasn’t been getting his line right. Struggling the Aussies.

If it wasn’t for Warner’s outfield catching the Aussies would be in a world of pain.

    Thanks Chaser.

Hawthorn's 4 + F1st is closest to the pin currently and hard to beat.  The F1st will be a top 10 pick, Hawthorn won't play finals next year. WC could even on trade it for more early picks this year.

    Our 6 + 11 + F1st doesn't top it and neither does 2 or 3 plus 17 from North IMO.

I’d consider North to keep making offers, so I’m thinking we could broker deals with west coast with teams that would want to split pick(s) or possibly with a view to next years draft (Giants?).
    Example:-

    Hawks have 4,33,44,54,63
    Dees have 6,11,42
    Eagles have 1,23,37,58.
    GWS have 7,16,43,59,77,79

    • Eagles receive 4,7,16
    • Hawks receive 6,11
    • GWS receive F1 (Dees), F1 (Hawks),33
    • Dees receive 1

JVR isn't KPF depth. He was essentially our no.1 KPF this year in his 1st season of AFL, and had to take on ruck duties later in the year. Naturally he tired, and his performance suffered.

As for the astute appraisal, what are the main avenues to goal for the likes of Lynch, Hawkins, King brothers. Larkey, Mitch Lewis, Marshall? I don't see them as goal poachers.

And how does our forward structure look if Ben King doesn't become available next year?

With the long term contract signed by  Naughton at the Dogs, where would that leave natural KF Ugle Hagan in their forward set-up? They already have Bruce, Darcy, Lobb .. they have surplus.
I know we have Jefferson in the wings, but if we’re seeking a young KF who has many strings to their bow, Ugle Hagan would be ideal to prise away at a cost. But the benefits would be huge.
