The Jesse Hogan Panic Room - all contract talk here
george_on_the_outer replied to Grapeviney's topic in Melbourne Demons
Exactly......the current one doesn't run out until 31 Oct (IIRC). Hogan and the club don't know how much can be offered until the numbers are in. And the kid has probably gone on holidays now, so don't expect anything until he gets back. -
Not likely. Vickery refuses to ruck at Richmond. More likely to be a big log to bring the ball to ground for Puopolo and Rioli. Roughead unlikely to ever return, so Vickery becomes the stay at home FF (since he doesn't chase or run)

Post Season Discussion 2016
george_on_the_outer replied to Deemented Are Go!'s topic in Melbourne Demons
Most players are contracted to 31 October. Trade week is 10-20 October. So ( without knowing the intricate details of each players contract), they are all contracted. -
Vince "played" on him in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, but never got close at any time.

Around The Grounds - ROUND 23
george_on_the_outer replied to Deemented Are Go!'s topic in Melbourne Demons
How did Essendon and Carlton get to play in their traditional strips today? One rule for some....... -
The pity is that the numbers themselves mean nothing. We are all aware that the Hawthorn "tasmanian" membership is the only way locals can get into the ground at Launceston due to the small size. North and the Bulldogs are handing out 3 game memberships to schoolkids and anyones name they purloin. Collingwood has 75K members but can only get 17K to turn up to a game? The only number that matters is membership dollars.

They want to replace Ty Vickery who won't run, ruck or chase with Travis who can't run, ruck or chase.....

Melbourne Auction Spectacular (donations needed)
george_on_the_outer replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Just under $78,000 bid so far. Plenty of chances to bid for all manner of things. I'm sure BBO and friends will be bidding for the barrel of Tyrells wine, or the 10 slabs of Melbourne bitter -
Around The Grounds - ROUND 21
george_on_the_outer replied to Deemented Are Go!'s topic in Melbourne Demons
Having watched that game, we should have a truly good chance of taking Geelong down again. Their coach took 3/4 of the game to realise kicking long to a forward line of Hawkins and not much else wasn't working. Bartel is picking up superannuation and simply shouldn't be on the field. If it weren't for Dangerfield and Selwood, they would be bottom half of the ladder. -
The last couple of games would have demonstrated how utterly dependant we are on Max Gawn. Not just for his rucking, but his telling defensive and offensive grabs, when everything was on the line. Spencer can fill a role for a couple of games if needed, but still cannot kick properly, mark overhead or is mobile enough for AFL level. We all know ruckmen take time, and we still don't know about Max and Mitch King. We certainly need to have someone ready to take over the Max mantle in 5 years or so.

Guarantee that rumour will become fact...... but in 2017.......... when Collingwood qualify and we won't as we are playing finals......

If they get the pick ahead of Essendrug, then it is a good thing. But like us, 1 player doesn't make the difference, it is a long process of astute selection, development and off field improvement that gets you there.

We need 3 picks in the ND ( compulsory) Wagner likely to be upgraded to full list. We have traded away 1st round pick. Hibberd and or Hurley to fit in? i.e we need 4, 5 or 6 "holes" Delisting contracted players like Dunn, Garland, Lamumba is not feasible, as we will push the salary cap this coming year, and their salary is included if you simply delist. The uncontracted players are the ones in the gun.

CASEY SCORPIONS v ESSENDON VFL

Another father-son?

Yes, have heard the same....but....that means Bomtempelli, Hrovat, Wood, McRae, Liberatore, Wallis, Redpath & Stringers contracts aren't. That means next year there still isn't any room unless some of these are moved on or most of Boyd, Morris, Minson and Murphy retire. Or.....they offer Hurley way below what the rest of the market will pay.. Just about every club would be interested in Hurley. But only some can afford him.
-
Yes, that is exactly it. \You have to find a way to counter when the opposition play a spare man in defence ( who sits usually 40m out from goal). It is why teams set up "the wall" to keep it in the forward line. It is why you have players nominated these days as "defensive forwards". And all teams set up in the same way, not just us.
-
It's easy really. The opposition sets up a defender 40m out, and suddenly there is no space to lead into for the forwards. At least with the forwards in the same location a contest is made.

Billy Stretch Appreciation Thread
george_on_the_outer replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Billy is yet another remarkable example of the work of the development staff now at the club. Like Wagner, Hunt and Oscar, they are not yet physically at the level required by AFL, but they are able to play as required. In previous years he would have been thrown into the seniors with hope for the best. Lots of upside still with Billy, and if he gets anywhere near the level of his old man then we will have another beauty! -
My 3 word player analysis V Gold Coast

And twisted his ankle in the first 5 minutes of the game. Could barely trot off the ground when he was called to rotate. -
Around The Grounds - Round 19
george_on_the_outer replied to Ethan Tremblay's topic in Melbourne Demons
Even though Geelong barely won the game against a severely injury depleted Dogs, they are simply uninspiring and will provide no challenge to Hawthorn in the finals. Bartel is finished, can barely run or kick anymore. It's easy when you get parked on a forward flank all game. Hawkins can only get 2 kicks a game off his own bat. Guthrie turns the ball over at most opportunities. Mackie likewise. Selwood looks injured. Cockatoo just filling in the numbers. They have some seriously damaging big men in Stanley, Bliclavs and Smith who can all take a mark, and some ageing yet still valuable defenders in Taylor and Lonergan. They must thank the gods for Dangerfield, because they wouldn't be playing finals this year without him. -
Perhaps people should go over to The Punt Road End to see why they are willing to give TV away: some quotes: "I'm still trying to work out why anyone would want to sign him." "I have been thinking similarly, Jinx. Can't fathom why any other club would contemplate signing him given his under-performing career at RFC. Vickery is a depth player at best ... and even that's questionable, in my opinion." "When he plays well he's pretty damn good. It's just too infrequent. Even this year when he's played crap he's still kicked more goals than Griffins". "True, but then Ty doesn't stray more than 25m from goals." "For me it would be enough just to see him *smile* up someone else's forward structure " As others both here and on the PRE site have noted....he will not ruck and he refuses to lead and run as a forward......

Watching the St.Kilda v Essendon game last night, we really need 2 players to play on Bruce and Membrey. Neither are runners, but are strong pack marks. T. Mac can handle one of them, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the return of Garland or Dunn for this game. Apart from Jack Steven, the Saints have little else that should worry us. Reiwoldt is a shadow of his former self, and the turnovers that they gave against a deplorable side in Essendon would have seen the result reversed against any other side. In fact Essendon led with 10 minutes to go. This is the chance to get rid of another of those records.....
